MD Pick 4 - Nick Watson
Pick 4 - Essendon - Nick Watson
169cm - Small Forward

If I was to compare a past player to Watson it would be Milne, he is just a menace of a small forward who oozes confidence and can back up his outward confidence with his incredible athleticism and skill. There isn’t many weaknesses Watson has as a small forward and some may get put off by his height but he isn’t much shorter than Kozzy Pickett and honestly I think he will become the best small forward in the competition and quickly. He is ready to play AFL now and will slot into any AFL side in 2024 and would be a huge shout for that years rising star award.

Players considered: Zane Duursma/Will Lorenz

MD Pick 5 - Zane Duursma
Pick 5 - Adelaide
Zane Duursma
Medium Forward
Gippsland/Vic Country

Justification

I'm just sticking to my board at this point and Duursma was the highest on it. Super talented and with his brother and sister already in South Australia, I think the off-field fit makes a lot of sense too. It came down to Duursma and Will Lorenz at this position.

Profile
I think Duursma's best work so far has been what he's done inside forward 50. He's a strong vertical athlete, he gets good separation on the lead and his touch and goal sense are first class. I'm hoping to see him take a greater role through the middle of the ground next season as that will further extend his ceiling.

Others considered
Will Lorenz

ALMOST ABLE TO GRAB JAKOB RYAN WITH RICHMONDS FIRST PICK….WTF

Richmond - Phoenix Foster - 197cm - 88kg - FWD/RUCK
View attachment 1543311

STRENGTHS:

  • Athleticism
  • Aerial ability
  • Contested marking
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Ruck craft
  • Follow-up work

Trying to draft as Richmond would and should.
A tall fwd who can ruck and is developable with a big upside.
Phoenix is very athletic and has great leading patterns with strong hands and will crash a pack, take the mark or make sure the ball is brought to ground. He kicked 26 goals from 11 games this year and rucked well in the champs alongside Harry Barnett.
He has that versatility of being able to hold his own in the ruck with a great leap and good tap work and is a good positioner around the ground too.
Best available in a position of need here with a few that came into consideration and I will grab one of them with the next pick because there are a few goodies still available.

In consideration, almost everyone left, mainly L.Teal, N.Long, K.Smith, O.Northam, H.Cole, H.Gallagher, J.Binns.

eDPS i think your up
I think it's an absolute lock we will take one of the talls still available on the draft board at this pick, who that is is anyone's guess, but Foster fits the bill based on need and with upside.

with respect, he is not worth two years for me.

draft him as a rookie in the rookie draft. I still think we have the rucks covered anyway, plus he is small for a ruck and looks stiff for a KPF

I am having a look at the bigfooty phantom to see if there is anybody worth two years for us

Well, it’ll make his trade to Port in 2 years time easier.

Collingwood National Draft recap:

Pick 19 - Collingwood - Isaac Keeler
Pick 27 - Collingwood - Harry Barnett
Pick 30 - Collingwood - Mitch Szybkowski

Pick 49 - Collingwood - Jakob Ryan

Honestly it's probably the most excited I've been in one of these Phantom Drafts. At each pick I got the player I wanted and barring a ridiculous slider in the Top 20, it was how I hoped it would go if I had planned it at the start. With the first pick I figured I had to go either Keeler or Barnett and settle for Sibba with the second, but then realising that Sibba might drop past Eagles, I had no worries picking up Barnett (who I correctly guessed would target a ruck). Then from about the mid-30s I was hoping Ryan might be a slider, and was top of my list for a long time. When it got close I kept refreshing the page and was very pleased to get him so late.

From a positional perspective, we picked up a tall pairing who could form a future ruck-forward duo for many years, and we are known for taking SA prospects. Keeler could be anything and Barnett is the standout ruck in the draft. In my eyes, Sibba is a young Tom Mitchell with a few extra tricks if he can be developed right. He also fits a perfect need of being that inside ball-winner. Ryan isn't a particular need, but the fact he could come in and release one of our defender-mids would be pleasing. Impressively could take the opponent Howe always takes to free him up. All in all, pretty ecstatic with what I was able to grab with the picks I had.
Great picks and I’ll argue Ryan also addresses a team need. Collingwood don’t have any small defenders pushing for selection in VFL. And while Ryan is not small per se, the fact he can play on smalls is going to a benefit for Collingwood in that Quaynor and Noble have competition for places, and it potentially allows to push Nick Daicos from half back to midfield.

MD Pick 7 - Archer Reid
Hawthorn
Pick 7 2023
Archer Reid
201cm 85kg KPF
Gippsland Power

Brother of Essendons Reid, he moves well for a big man, tore apart the Trials game to qualify for the champs, marking everything and kicking a few goals, but had an average champs, his potential is through the roof with his height, movement and marking ability, if he can replicate some of his better games next year he could go high, picking him on potential here, Tholstrup and Caddy are also options at this pick, but I'll go with the big guy and hope he shows developmental improvement next year, could be a star if it all comes together.

roos_fanatic08 you're up

2023 I'm hoping the Crows take #13 in this pick :runner:

MD Pick 9 - Koltyn Tholstrup
Pick 9 | St. Kilda | Koltyn Tholstrup | 188cm 80kg | General Forward/Midfielder

Disappointed Nate Caddy didn't make it here, but Koltyn is a worthwhile consolation prize. He's an athletic, dynamic medium forward who can pinch hit in the guts when his team needs to just get it forward. He's played games across halfback as well, but as a mid he tears games open with his core strength and a massive boot. Unsure of his potential as a flight risk, but just on skill and upside he's worth the pick right now. I will say this top ~15 is far more exciting than the 2022 group for mine, so much upside with athletic, skilled footballers that can play on pretty much every line.

Also Considered: Colby McKercher, Will Lorenz, Nathan Philactides

Geelong’s Draft

I suspect my draft won’t score well on the all important draft winners and losers. But I’m happy with who I got, and optimistic I’ll look like a genius in hindsight.

#8 Darcy Jones
#54 Hugh Davies
#60 Lachlan Scannell

Fast small forward/midfielder, a key defender and a power running outside midfielder sounds like a nice mix to me. I rate Jones higher than most and I’m well aware of that, but I think his game translates well and could have an impact earlier than expected.

If I was going for the thread win, I probably would have picked Bailey Humphrey, Ethan Phillips and Blake Drury with my picks. But that’s a bit boring.
