I'm surprised that we're 50 posts into this thread and that no-one has mentioned the quality (or lack thereof) of the pictures.
I've been used to watching the cricket for the past few months in HD, on Fox Sports and now that 9 are the only ones doing it the pictures are significantly worse. It's like someone turned the lights down, blurred up the picture and made it more grainy. It's like we're back in the dark ages.
Fox Sports HD have the highlights late in the night, or the next morning and we can watch it in HD there (where it's soooo much better) and it makes you realise how much worse it looks in standard def on 9. (As the Presidents Cup golf did, a couple of weeks ago). It really sucks balls, compared to HD.
I was really looking forward to the summer of cricket until I realised it would all be in standard def on 9. At least the Big Bash will be in HD, on Foxtel. But then I believe 9 will have that next summer as well.:mad:
Something needs to be done about this so we can all join the 21st century and watch the Australian summer cricket in HD (like on GEM) if we have an HD TV (and how many don't these days?).
How much longer will we have to endure standard def? Once we have a day of test cricket go past 6pm (when 9 will switch the coverage to GEM) all those of you who haven't see cricket in HD will realise what I mean. You won't ever want to see it in SD again.

Re: How bad Channel 9's efforts were today

Wtf, $140 for a radio?

With perfect reception, a bunch of extra channels, presets, various alarms (on mine, able to spot weekends and public holidays), self-correcting time, intellitext, mp3 connectivity...

For people who listen to the radio a fair bit, it's well worth it.

I'm really surprised take up of digital radio by manufactorers hasn't been much bigger. You would think digital radio woul come standard in cars, home stereos, phones and the like. I suppose it's supply and demand, as soon as more people buy them the cheaper they would get. But most people won't buy them until they're cheaper.

But I still don't fully understand why they are so expensive, the technology isn't that advanced in them, you can buy a 3G iPod for around the same price, and there's a heap more technology in that

I reckon everyone has become a bunch of whingers.

Some guy was whining about ch 9 not having HD.

Channel 9's broadcast is top notch IMO.

If you were a kiwi fan you'd have been yelling at the TV. Where was the interview of the 'correct' man of the match Bracewell? The lack of acknowledgment and lack of credit given to the NZ team after the win was really telling.

On a positive note, I do enjoy the hot spot, snicko, and some of the slow mo replays, hawkeye technology. In general the camera work is very good. And the veiwers invovlement is a good idea too, just not deciding the man of the match to an obviously biased audience.

Seriously, point taken, but is it a big deal?

Who cares. People just like a good whinge.

Who else is going to do it better?

It's the biasness and the patronizing manner of the commentators that shits me the most. It really seems they are trying to reach out to the cricket-ignorant Australian bogan. Healy, Slater and to a lesser extent Taylor being the main offenders. Healy talking himself up for working with Haddin was particularly cringeworthy. Beating Australia was a massive achievement for NZ and their fans deserved fair and decent coverage. Can't wait to have Lawry back in the commentary box again, and hopefully we can get a few changes to the commentary team.

Channel 9 have canned the 'viewers choice' MOTM award. Obviously the public backlash was listened to.

Cricket Australia has abandoned its Logies-style voting system for the man-of-the-match award following the outcry over New Zealand's Doug Bracewell being overlooked despite bowling his team to victory in Hobart.
CA chief executive James Sutherland said it would revert to an expert's choice for the Test series against India and beyond.
"We were always running a bit of a trial for these two Tests with those man of the match awards but we will definitely revert back to an expert's choice for that decision about man of the match," Sutherland told Radio 3AW.

By "some guy" you mean "most people". It's 2011 and we get our international cricket team in Standard Definition. It's a joke.

ABC Radio is a lot better to listen to.

Missing Glen Mitchell. He has been a brilliant anchor for a long time. I wish him all the very best and a speedy recovery. I was fortunate enough to hear his story recently ... get well Glen !

They arent that expensive, you can get a digital radio pretty cheaply these days, if you just want a digital radio to listen to then you can get something that works well for about 40-50 bucks

I won mine in a raffle :D But not being a big radio person outside of the car it rarely gets used, would never use it for the cricket as ABC coverage sucks. The amount of times I have turned on the radio because I dont have a TV and wanted to know what was happening yet listen for over 5 minutes and not only do you not get a score but you dont even know who is batting or bowling, its unbelievable as they are too busy chatting away and every now and then they break their conversation for a simple

"Blocked into the covers, no run, now back to that story with no relevance"

As for the MOM, they should keep polling people but when its wrong have it overturned, but still let people see who the public voted for

Imagine if Tendulkar hit a match winning century and Siddle got MOM, the Indians would head home :D

One gets the feeling that CA thought no Kiwi would be a chance for MOTM in either test, which is why they trialled it.

I think you must have turned your radio on during a tea break.

It certainly does look like another summer of abysmal commentary. The absolute bogan-orientated wank-a-thons that Slater and Healy carry on with are just embarrassing to listen to. I refuse to watch the Cricket Show while Slater is in charge.

Unfortunately, it looks like Bill Lawry is semi-retired and is going to make sporadic appearances (Boxing Day, etc.). Richie must almost be blind and Tony's only bright points the days are his strong anti-India sentiment.

I quite like the Foxtel commentary on domestic matches. They don't take themselves too seriously at all and just say what they are thinking, not worried about upsetting CA or anyone else. Brendan Julien and Damien Fleming are a pretty funny duo.

The best commentators in world cricket IMO are definately the West Indians. Ian Bishop, Jeff Dujon, Tony Cozier and Fahzeer Mohammed are simply fantastic, don't get all sentimental and soapy, and seem the least bias of all the coverages around the world.

Arun Lal and Gavaskar from India are good for their comedy value, albiet unintentional.

Are Keith Stackpole and Frank Tyson still alive?
Stacky most certainly is, he's about 70 I think.

The main problem I have with the Channel 9 commentary is that they think they have to talk all the time. They never leave the pictures to talk for themselves. At all.

This leads to so much of the unnecessary babble we hear. It's filler.
