Preview: Tigers v Kangaroos

Sportal

VENUE & TIME: Telstra Dome, 5.10pm AEST, Sunday, July 8
HEAD TO HEAD: Richmond: 80, Kangaroos: 62, Draws 1
LAST TIME: Richmond 15.12 (102) def Kangaroos 9.13 (67), Round 11, 2006 at the MCG
WALKING WOUNDED: After losing key big man Nathan Thompson (knee) for 12 months on the eve of the season, the Kangaroos have enjoyed some good luck on the injury front. Josh Gibson (head injury) is another out for the year while youngsters Blake Grima (hamstring) and Daniel McConnell (shoulder) cannot be considered. The Tigers welcomed back big man Troy Simmonds (ankle) last round, but fellow talls Ray Hall (hip) and Trent Knobel (leg) are both set to miss once more. The skilled Patrick Bowden (hip) and Andrew Krakouer are both tipped to be available for round 14 while Mark Coughlan (knee) and Dean Polo (shoulder) won't pull on the yellow-and-black until 2008.
FORM: The Kangaroos gave iron-man Glenn Archer a 300th senior match to remember with a win over the Bulldogs last weekend. Richmond, with just one victory to this point of the season, ran St Kilda to 17 points at Telstra Dome.

WHO'S HOT: While there was no Kangaroo hotter than Drew Petrie (six goals in the first 20 minutes) during the early stages against the Bulldgos, little man Brent Harvey kept going all day. He ran tirelessly and booted two crucial goals when the Dogs challenged late. His form, coupled with the team's winning ways, would have him in Brownlow Medal calculations. Richmond youngster Nathan Foley has claims on being the most improved player in the league this year. The gutsy 21-year-old is eighth in the league for disposals and, probably more impressively, he is ranked 11th for total tackles. The top tip for the Tigers' best-and-fairest.
WE THINK: The Roos are back in the eight and have a chance to shore up a place in the top half with a win over Richmond. On paper it looks pretty straightforward - the Tigers, stone motherless, against Dean Laidley's lads fresh from a confidence-boosting victory against the Bulldogs. However, if this season has taught us anything, it is expect the unexpected. All of a sudden Richmond's forward set-up with Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown and Kayne Pettifer has a bit of firepower. If Brown and Richo get going early they can be mighty tough to stop. However, the talented Hamish McIntosh should give the likes of Harvey, Adam Simpson, Shannon Grant, Daniel Wells and Daniel Harris first use out of the middle and ensure enough supply for the 'Roos to post a winning total. In a tighter tussle than many will expect, Kangaroos by 15 points.

Wednesday, 4th July, 2007 3:38:00 pm
Where and when: Sunday July 8, Telstra Dome, 5.10pm.
Head to head: Richmond 80 wins, Kangaroos 62 wins, 1 draw.
Last time: Richmond 15.12 (102) d Kangaroos 9.13 (67), round 11, 2006, at the MCG.
Whether you believe in the “shinboner spirit” or not, there’s something very special at Arden St that frequently enables the Kangaroos to get up and win when the challenge is on. Whether it’s when everyone expects them to fall away, or for a milestone such as Glenn Archer’s 300th game, you can be sure they’ll bleed for the cause.
Spirit or no spirit, they’re still human, and it must have been an emotionally draining week for the club. The man happiest to see the week pass will be Archer himself, for he’s never been one for all the fuss – he’ll be just happy his side walked away with all four points.
For Richmond, they’ll be looking at their lost to St Kilda as a missed opportunity. They led at half-time and were within a kick with a quarter to go, but failed to keep up when the Saints piled on the pressure.
KEY MATCH-UPS
Nathan Foley v Brent Harvey
What a star Foley is turning out to be. He’s quick, smart, agile and he can find the footy. There’s so much to like about watching a promising midfielder come of age, especially when he plays the game with such zeal. However, Harvey is in great touch, and this should be a fantastic duel.
Troy Simmonds v Hamish McIntosh
After so long on the sidelines, Simmonds made his long-awaited return last week, and despite being relatively quiet, he’ll be much better for the run. He’ll need it too, because the form of McIntosh has been superb in 2007, and his 20-possession, 14-hitout match last week was special.
Nathan Brown v Glenn Archer
With both grabbing their fair share of the headlines in recent weeks, it will be good to see them both back to doing what they do best without the hype. Brown’s return to the elite level has been seamless, and Archer will have to be at his dour best to keep him down.
BLUFFER'S GUIDE
Richmond has been hurt throughout the season by last-quarter wobbles, leading or being within striking range of its opponents in all but four games. They’ll be missing in September, but they’re capable of providing nuisance value over the remaining rounds. The Kangaroos, however, have too much to play for and have won eight of their last 10 matches. They might be playing for a top-four spot on Sunday night if other results go their way on Friday night and Saturday.
WILDCARD
Drew Petrie
Wow – where did that come from? Petrie’s incredible six-goal opening-quarter burst blew the game wide open last week, but can he back up such heroics with another strong showing?
MID-WEEK QUESTION MARKS
”Richo” was in pretty good form against the Saints. With the Kangaroos’ defence perhaps not as tight as Dean Laidley would like, could the big forward be in for a bag?
Kasey Green has been a bit of a misfit during his AFL career, but a strong showing against the Bulldogs was a good sign. Nearly 28, what does the future hold for this one-time West Coast Grand Final player?
It was suggested during the week that Brett Deledio doesn’t enjoy a close tag (who does?) but how will he respond this week? And should Terry Wallace play some reverse psychology and ask him to be a nullifier rather than a creator?

Does anyone know if there are any seats on level 1 for general admisson, or is it only level 3 today?

Im sure you can get GA at level 1. Unless its fully ticketed you should be able to get level 1 tickets. Make sure you get em near the Coventry end or the members wing.

4.4. to 1.1

Jesse Smith playing great. Richmond's kicking is terrible.

All of Nth having a go and pressurring. The 1st qtr seemed to be a game of tactics. Richo looks dangerous, Grant roving wide and McMahon a surprise packet.

Harvey is the most dangerous player on the ground when he has the pill.

21 points up at 1/4 time - not enough reward for the amount of play we had.

Boomer on fire.
Grant playing well.
Love McMahon - a real goer.
H dominating the ruck.
Spud well beaten by Richo but not making us pay.
CJ also doing well.

Smith also a touch of class.

had enough play to be 6 goals up but not capatilising on our chances.

Lets hope we have a 7 goal 2nd quarter and put the tiges away.

When is Arch going to learn - another dumb 50 penalty.

Is there a mute button for Danny Frawley, there's 2 teams out there Danny, start calling some North names ya buffoon.

Geez Harros skills are ordinary so far today.

I love McMahon.

But we aren't getting reward on the score board. Dominating the game but only 22 up - couple of quick goals from the tiges and they are in it.

Spud is becoming a major worry on Richo - being towelled.
