Interesting that Mason McGroder is there, but Aidan McCartney isn't.

I wonder if that is a bit of tell on where Aidan is likely to head.

You would think so

Great to support McGroder even if he chooses athletics. They all sound like great kids. Still find it interesting that Aidan is at our Academy rather than GWS. Is it geographical?

Mason also has a Tier 1 Scholarship within the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program

Is the academy at best stagnating, at worse, going backwards? We are barely able to find one draftable player per year and since our super haul of 2020, it's been pretty slim pickings, both from the male and female programs. Off the top of my head, I think it's pretty similar for GWS, especially when the players from south of the Barassi line are excluded. In the meantime, the number of draftable players from SEQ (especially GC) has exploded, with plenty taken in the first round of both male and female drafts. We have even taken a couple from the Lions academy in Arnold and Snell!

I think this a reflection on the relative growth of the game in SEQ as compared to NSW. Clearly, AFLQ is able to attract and retain top junior athletes whereas this is not happening to the same extent in NSW. NSW AFL has alot of work to do to catch up.

Swings and roundabouts. 1 player a year is a great return, not counting the Giants players being picked up as well. It used to be closer to 1 Sydney kid a decade.

Next year we supposedly have a strong batch coming through, so it will even things out

I think Cochran went at 47 this year in a strong draft. And next year we might have a player bid on in the 2nd round.

Next year we have three very good players who look likely to be selected in next years main draft.

2026 also looks good.

McCartney is likely to select North (in our academy due to Dad living in our catchment)

Looks like there'll be an early hit-out against an AFL Sydney U22 rep team in early March

Matchday 2: Saturday, March 8 @ Blacktown International Sports Park – Oval 1
  • AFL Sydney Female U22’s v QBE Sydney Swans Academy
  • AFL Sydney Male Under 22’s v QBE Sydney Swans
