Maybe not to drop so many marks and fumbles so much

Haha, this is spot on. The defenders are absolutely blind. He has cost us dearly in big moments already this year. Yes he does seem to have a freak factor to kick brilliant goals, but to play senior AFL footy you need to pick the ball up off the ground and also take a chest mark. He makes too many mistakes at present. I'm not against leaving him in the seniors another week or two, but if he got dropped there could be few arguments, imo. Best to leave it up to our coaches and hope they know what's best, more senior exposure or a drop in intensity in the VFL.

It's always a balancing act with kids exposure v confidence.

We are in for an interesting time.

I’m not sure there’s too much blindness among his defenders. More an acceptance that it’s a development year and the cost is currently justified. Short term pain, long term gain. It’s not like there’s a small-medium forward tearing the VFL asunder demanding to be elevated.

Like Ash Johnson? There’s literally only a few cms between them.

There seems to be a want to promote Henry as a medium tall type, but I’m not seeing it yet. Might get there eventually but still a pretty skinny 19 year old. Johnson may only be 3-4cm’s taller and 8-10kg’s heavier, but he’s also 5 years older so a much more mature body.

There is a difference between saying bit of play are James hird like and seeing a few weeks in a row he is not up to it currently.

Its very and I mean blind Freddy kind of obvious that he is a confidence player and right now it’s not up. He’s timid and not just vs Geelong and fumbling a lot.

Why people are scared to let him find his way through VFL has me stumped and lol at your he’s only x goals behind H.McKay its bloody round 3. He’s kicked 2, 2 and 1 goal in games we have largely dominated with ample opportunities for forwards.

He’s kicked 5 goals from 7 shots and 7 marks total. From 3 games these aren’t high numbers to be comparing with top line kpfs favourably. His impact on games from creating contests to being a focal point also not compar@ble.

Its not a pot on Henry it’s people feeling he is not ready and it’s better to let him build confidence and form in vfl, people aren’t marking his cards permanently.
I don't get what you mean by this, almost all of his class/clutch moments in the first three rounds have come after he's made simple/bad errors. So if he was a confidence player, wouldn't he go into his shell for the rest of the match after his massive errors?

I'm not excusing his bad moments (I raged hard when he dropped that easy mark on the fwd 50 and Geelong rebounded and goaled), and I'm not going to call for him to dropped or to stay in the team, I'm not fussed either way.

I just think your confidence theory is off the mark and he's actually just a young inexperienced player who's inconsistent.

I wouldn't save confidence but like all nearly all young players he's nervy and probably will be for a little while yet.

Cost us dearly is a little over the top. This is a development year for our young players, wins and loses don’t matter.

Wins and losses matter. We can play finals if we get a good run with injuries. We had a similar number of kids in the team in 2010.
Finals would be lovely but not entirely at the cost of development.

Enough senior players to stabilize the playing group and then a mixture of 1st and 2nd year players even 3rd years considering the impact of Covid.

The young players still have to earn their spots, Henry has been given enough games for his development. He either has to stop fumbling at AFL level or go back down to develop in the VFL whilst another young player gets opportunity to play.

No it wouldn’t as it would effect the things he thinks he’s poor in more then things he has confidence in, if you drop a lot of marks or fumble a lot you know it but you may feel good about getting the pill stepping a player and kicking at goal this won’t erode as you feel confident in your ability to execute so will not think about it and do it naturall.
On the other hand fumbling or dropping a mark will put pressure on himself not to do it again and consequently find himself dropping more marks. It doesn’t predicate you will drop them all but increases the likelihood you will drop/fumble again.

Averaging 1.67 goals a game which puts him in some pretty good company such as Bayley Fristch and Charlie Cameron. While less than optimal, he is still contributing. Not sure why people assume that either he or the team will be better served with his demotion. Who is the small-medium forward replacing him? Bianco? Cal Brown?

I think the concern is more about where his development will be best served. The coaches will have the inside info and know whats best. At 19 yo some allowances can be made for not committing to contests but its also a bad look for the team if he is allowed to get away with it too often. VFL may be, and its only a maybe, the best place to deal with this.

He is scoring goals but all of his other involvements have been poo.

Ash Johnson.

So (IF) Henry gets dropped back to the VFL and kicks 5 goal's this weekend would he come back into the senior side the following weekend?

Depends on how the forward line in the seniors is working. Adams and De Goey are the priority ins so he’d probably have to wait another week if he was dropped this week. In saying that given they’re the two outs this week I wouldn’t drop Henry.

He has shown Clean Hands at VFL Level

The run down of Selwood and subsequent goal well and truly made up for his dropped mark early in the match.

Honestly he's 19 and played 13 games. Of course he has room for improvement.

Alas some of his goals in those 13 games are probably already better than some will obtain across 100 games of football.

Henry is a genuine forward talent and I for one wont be happy until we have secured his signature because Geelong will surely come calling.

Block of games down imo much like the season before.

Or are you saying those calling for Johnsons inclusion are doing so off 1 game?

Well a counter argument to that is Henery got selected off his draft ranking and hadn't done much to be included in the starter 1 round 22 either.

Happy for him to continue in the seniors.
