Only 7 decent teams - who should get 8th?

First line is in relation to where we finish at the end of the season (ie. quality to beat good teams and finish with a decent ladder position)

Second line is in relation to finals performance. Carlton are a better team then North.

They are a one game better team than North at the moment.

There is no certainty it will be that way at the end of the season.

Sydney: North (SCG), Carlton (ES), Melbourne (MCG), Geelong (ANZ), Hawthorn (SCG), Fremantle (Subi), Bulldogs (SCG), Brisbane (G)

North: Sydney (SCG), Richmond (MCG), Essendon (ES), Bulldogs (ES), Fremantle (ES), St Kilda (ES), West Coast (Subi), Melbourne (MCG)

Adelaide: West Coast (Subi), Geelong (AS), Port (AS), Richmond (MCG), Bulldogs (AS), Brisbane (G), Collingwood (MCG), St Kilda (AS)

Teams below aren't worth considering, teams above would have to have a Richmond-esque 0-8 end to the season to open up a second spot for these 3 to battle over.

Not suggesting we wont make the finals but it wouldnt take much of a drop in form for the Hawks to create that second spot IMO

Hawks: Geelong (MCG), Brisbane (Aurora), St Kilda (ES), Port (AAMI), Sydney (SCG), Melbourne (MCG), Fremantle (Aurora), Collingwood (MCG)

Absolute nightmare run home with the top 4 and 2 tough away games to come.

Seriously Adelaide have won two in a row - why does everyone think they can make the 8 now? And who have they beaten? Melbourne and Essendon. Both at home. Both against bottom 8 sides.
The only reason Adelaide are 10th (or 11th - whatever) is because Essendon, Brisbane, Port Adelaide and Melbourne are all shit
Adelaide's away record this year? 0-6. Pathetic.

this is pathetic. Pull your head out of the clouds. North Melbourne is shit, and theyre losing worse than Adelaide.

They are no chance either. Sydney to finish 8th

One game + massive percentage better team then North.

Carlton have easily outperformed North over the entirety of the season which is highlighted by that percentage. Our biggest win was over St Kilda.

Of course there is no certainty of things staying this way but given what has transpired the past 14 rounds I would be extremely confident of things remaining as they have been

After looking at the draw it seems that whoever wins out of North and Sydney this week will play finals.
That being said, nuisance teams like Melbourne, Adelaide and Richmond could continue to knock teams off around them on the way home and make the battle for eigth a real slog for those two teams(syd, north). Ditto if Brisbane get a few players back and get on a roll.

It is between the Roos and the Swans but like others have said, just making up the numbers on current form. Both teams have beaten everyone below them (until today) but struggled against the better teams. Along with Carlton the 8th team have no chance at getting past the second week.

On the Blues, when 100% they can match any side, but even at 95% they start to drop away more than the others. Probably need one extra inside midfielder and another KP player then they should be set.

As a Roo supporter, we need to have our best 22 playing close to their best. Anthony and Ziebell won't be there for sure while Petrie will struggle to get back up to scratch in time. That's enough to cause us pain. I have enormous faith in a number of our younger players but they are not ready yet.

Petrie is back next week.

Will team up well with Hansen now at CHF, Petrie in the goal square.

Carlton have shown they're good enough to beat the top 2 teams in the league convincingly...

If Carlton had to play the Kangaroos in a finals game I'd be pretty happy because if you make the eight you will easily be the weakest team of the lot.

We'd flog you again. I'd have money on it.

If people are willing to consider Adelaide, I do not see why Brisbane is out of the question. Some sides are vastly better with their barometer in the team (Brown), with Brisbane one of these. Many forget that 8 or so weeks ago, Carlton looked insipid losing to Essendon without Judd. With him back, they are a more confident and skilful side. The same could be said for Brown (when fit) and for Brisbane.

You mean Carlton slightly ahead of North on points, but North to win if they face each other?

Yeah, I agree.

The problem for Brisbane is they play St Kilda, Hawthorn & Geelong in the next 3 weeks. Lose all of those & the best they can hope for is 10 wins for the season, which probably won't be enough to make the 8.

Sydney easily. Forget today they are superior to all 8 teams below them. Richmond are playing with real passion at the moment and are desperate to prove the football world wrong, they deserved to win today but come on... Sydney led that game 10.11 to 6.2 - it should of been all over. Well Done to the Tigers for coming back like they did but the Swans will regroup for a big game at the SCG next week and it's that home grown advantage that will guide them through to the finals.

As for North... 10 goals down in the last quarter against a non-existent Geelong forward line. Some nice respectability in the final minutes when they piled on some junktime goals but let's face it... a mile off the pace along with most of the teams in the bottom 8. Been underlined further with heavy losses so far this year to St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood & Fremantle.

Adelaide are coming back from too far and are flat track bullies in general. Can beat insipid travelling sides like Essendon & Melbourne at home but will again stumble away from home. They are yet to win an away game but next week may be their best chance yet... after that they have some very tricky sides who will put them back in their place.

Brisbane, Essendon & Port are all shot. No hope.

The rest are playing it out for the spoon...

Agree with this.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

THE 8 WONT CHANGE

i think the fact our sides sits in 8th playing mostly rubbish this year shows the top 8 is far too many teams in a 16 team comp

Well I think last year was the best evidence of that.

Nevertheless, I think I understand the OP's point. If Sydney, North or Adelaide make the 8, each of them is a really good chance to beat any of the 3 teams who fill the places above them, but next to no chance of being competitive in the second week of the finals.

North have beaten all teams below them bar Essendon (who we haven't played yet) as well as Hawthorn and Carlton who are both in your magical 7.
.
Yes but North have looked absolutely embarrassing against the top 4 teams, haven't even been in the game, lost to St Kilda, Collingwood, Fremantle and Geelong by an average margin of 65 points.

That is why I put Kangaroos in a different category to Carlton. Because if Carlton finish 5th-8th and make it past the first week, they have some shot against one of the top 4 teams in a semi, whereas North have no hope at all.

I think we will finish where we are now... 10th. However, if we pull off a win or two against either Geelong, Collingwood, Bulldogs or the Saints, 8th may happen.

North are not a top 8 team yet.
Not ready for it either.

Maybe with a full, fit list inc, Petrie, Anthony & Zeibel, we might sneak in.
But the teams above us are all further developed at the moment.
I'd rather make the eight when we're ready, no point playing finals and getting embarrassed as we did under Laidley. Brad Scott has got us playing the way we should.
With another couple of preseasons and better luck with injuries, North will be playing finals the way they should be played.
As for this year, we are not ready nor deserving of finals.

People are forgetting how good we are at the SCG... would not be surprised if we knock off Hawthorn or the Dogs there. We should make the eight but this weekend should be interesting. Man, a win today and a win next week would've put us 8 points + percentage outside the bottom 8. ****, it hurts.
