Review Opening Round = GWS 114-82 Collingwood

All in all, it's probably not the worst sign that GWS can play an absolute blinder (18.4 from 50 inside 50's is beyond elite) fuelled by the fire of a losing prelim... and we can play fumbly, structure-less football like it's a low-intensity practice match...

...and we can still have more shots on goal and more i50's.

We were very, very bad. But even then, there’s still upside.

💯

You only have to be slightly off against good sides to be in trouble.
We were more than slightly off last night, so there's plenty of room for improvement.

Magpies defense was far below their best. The new guy was a weak point and it affected the veterans rotation and pressure.
But kudos to Giants for exposing it.

The midfield was a bit even except Giants were quicker and much more efficient in disposals that lead to goal attempts. Pies forward line looked disoriented. Felt that Schultz and Elliot combo along with Hill as being too small. The Giants defenders could spoil any aerial attempts and apply pressure easily with their lengths.... the Pies small forwards did not play fast nor spacious enough which neutralises the advantages.

With that said... I said last season that if Giants won against Pies that they would beat Lions in GF.... they are that good.

This game showed that Giants are a serious premiership contender side. They had no weakness and their speed and efficiency reminds me of Hawls 2015.

Pies need to find a strategy against Giants if they want to go back to back.

On paper I would say they are more talented going I to last night.

Our system was bad and Moore is no good when system is down.
Murphy is a big issue if he doesn't get back on the park as Howe is closer to the end.

Had a few who had a crack but in general we were planted and the result was flattering in end.

Do we have too many small forwards and not enough who can take a mark and convert?

Thought Dean showed enough and will be worth persisting with.

Shutdown our running and pressure game and it goes in long to a contest with Checkers and Cox/Cameron who were all up against the Giants talent and system.

Another test next week with a finals contender who also matches well against us.

I can't see us getting the chocolates here either.

Actually a good thing the hard start as it will quickly bring us back to earth and expose our weaknesses.

The lack of young talent we have is a worry when watching a few of the other clubs so far in round zero.

Insipid and pathetic, GWS really stuck it to us in the lead up to the game.

I disagreed on bringing AJ and Dean in, the former is can’t mark and is not AFL standard, the latter has played 1 VFL game in two years. How it was a good idea to bring him in I’ll never know. Moore was lost trying to partner him. The GWS forwards had a field day today, we lost the game at selection.

We can’t expect the older brigade to carry the load anymore. They will peak during finals, we should rotate them out of the side regularly, and in favour of playing the next generation…Finn should have played today, Reef…just play them. Cox was crazy bad.

Degoey needs to start putting together full games.

Schultz was close to worst on ground, didn’t seem to handle the big league all that well.

Out: Dean, Cox, AJ, Mitchell
In: Frampton, Reef, Finn,

Pressures off having to go undefeated this season 🤣

We were beaten by a better side on the night. Our mids were smashed. Our bad players were really bad. The way the ball was coming into their forward line, you cannot judge Dean yet. AJ presents no forward pressure or contest. Our small forwards were smashed. We kicked poorly. They kicked well. A few of their forward marks were taken with Cox not contesting. I don't know what to make of Cox effort tonight.

It's not the first time premiers have looked flat first round.

FWIW… have you seen AFL/GWS first four rounds vs ours. It's a joke.

It's a loss we needed to have. We will win the flag now

Mids smashed? We won clearances!

Schultz made an error just about everytime he touched it, Elliot was not a lot better, and AJ just looks asleep half the time.
Field kicking was back to being horrible.

He had many Friends last night doing the Same Thing

Meltdowns here epic. Now that we lost, bringing Dean in was the wrong move. Frampton was the answer. When we win next week everyone will be singing praises again. Get a grip.
I reality we should have had both in. One to replace Murphy, the other to replace Howe.

Noble was good but he was just more of the same with Markov, whilst macrae could have been cover for some of the aging mids with little to no preseason form.

Johnson obviously had a bad day, flip of the coin with him or McInnes but whoever they decide to stick with they should actually stick with.

Shultz was as nervous as a first gamer. Hopefully he’s got the yips out of the system

No meltdown from me just hopefully lesson learned

My personal notes on the game. Tough game by the way, Giants deserved it.

#1 It's great to run the fresh faces, but I think Noble should have his spot back next game imo

#2 Lipinski. I hate him (not literally) .. I really don't think he offers us much, and he is indeed my whipping boy again this season.

#3 Johnson, I'm sorry mate back to the magoos. I would rather run anything else, no matter how raw. And do it early whilst we can imo.

#4 We need some more fire in the belly, the boys were def a bit flat for my liking, GWS def put us through the wringer.

#5 I think we got a very tough season ahead of us, I feel we gonna face a lot of teams who have gone over our team an awful lot over the off season, I think we gonna be facing some challenges for sure.

And finally, It's just great to have footy back, win or lose.
Who is Noble going to replace?
Lipiniski is our best kick hitting targets inside 50 - you really aren’t watching very closely if you don’t get his value.

Schultz looked like he's lost in the system but it's his first season game against an elite team...

It will probably be round 8 onwards until he is used to the structure and role.

Good time to blood the new members....
Got to have Reef play also.

I would like to assume that the boys treated this game as nothing but another practice match. The lack of effort and hardness all over the ground showed. Not having a couple of our important defenders not playing also didn’t help. We got showed up big time.

No reason to go in to panic mode but our deficiencies were on show. We need to start bringing in more of the young blokes like fin, reef in particular because pendles will be done by years end and titch is slowing down a bit too.

The big loss for us is Mcstay, AJ nowhere near it and don’t know if he ever will be tbh. Hoping for a big response against the swannies and some changes\ structural changes as well

The set shot misses by Elliott and Shultz early in the 3rd both ended up being 2 goal turnarounds and killed any momentum we had. When you're battling to stay in the game, those just kill you.
I'm expecting us to bounce back this week. We are a good side that had a bad game, that's all.
I think it's time to give Macrae a block of games in the starting 22 so that he can finally acclimatise to senior level. Reef for AJ and Frampton in for somebody.

Actually 18:4 and 2 rushed.

The Herald Suns expected scores was Pies 92 to Giants 76.

Just shows they couldn't miss whilst we missed some real sitters.

Outside of the 2 Daicos boys, Cameron, Checkers and Bruz we were pretty ordinary.
I doubt we’ll lose many games in the future with 60 I50’s.
And not sure Kingsley is happy about conceding same - he’d clearly understand that we won’t kick as poorly, and they as accurately, next time around.
