Tom Morris has reported this is happening, so why not start the discussion now while we're bored in the off season? For those who don't remember, our two fixtures against Essendon this year were both close and both resulted in epic wins for us. In fact, the last time we played them in round 22 at Marvel Stadium it was the scene of one of the most memorable moments in our club history (get ready to shoosh Bombers fans!).
Not only did we end Essendon's season, we also saw Mac Daddy write his name into the record books with a winning goal after the siren to snap our long away game losing streak. I don't think I'll ever forget Howie's call after the siren - Mac Andrew... from directly in front... DRIVES A DAGGER INTO ESSENDON HEARTS! There's no doubt Essendon will be seeking revenge for what we did to them that night and I'm very confident this one is going to sell out (get your tickets ASAP!). It will also be the first home and away game that Mac Andrew will play since signing the biggest contract we've ever handed out.
I'm really excited for this one. Essendon will be without a few experienced players in Stringer and Kelly this time around and will likely debut a draftee or two (Kako most likely). On our side, we'd be expecting to play Rioli for the first time and John Noble
may well be in line to play his first game in the red and gold as well. Perhaps Lombard could be in line for a start too. I guess we'll also be debuting our new jumper/logo in this game as well, so there's plenty to get excited about! Unlike this year, we've been given a prime time free to air TV slot for this game on the Saturday night and that means there will be plenty of viewers tuning in to watch this one.
What do you guys think? Is Essendon a good match up for us in opening round? A win in this one would mean three consecutive victories over the Bombers and you just know that would infuriate them like it has Richmond and Carlton fans in the past when we've won several games against them. Let's go!
