Melbourne should be made to be a *n laughing stock after this. We'd be crucified in the media if we ****ed up a trade this severely

Way too much over-reaction in the media to this.

It’s been one game.

If Gawn gets a serious injury this week, the Grundy recruitment will be hailed a mere week later as a masterstroke.

Damn, I liked the idea of having my cake & eating it too.

Something I’ve always wondered …

… whenever I get given cake, I eat it.

Am I doing it all wrong?

Sounds pretty silly to take a pay cut when you don’t have to.
Have you ever accepted a pay cut to do the same job?

People take pay cuts for a better job all the time.

And “better job” can include working for an organisation that actually wants you to be there.

So not Grundy’s situation then.

Grundy has been well compensated for his 2 years of good football. clubs extend players contracts while they are still contracted all the time. Of coarse clubs say, " you are performing so well that we are extending your contract", it's happening now with McCreery. I don't even see how your claim makes sense in relation to grundy. It's simple, the club would have told him time he is under performing compared to what he's being paid. We can't afford to pay you what you are currently on, so you either take a pay cut or we will trade you. Simples

Not simples at all. Grundy has a contract, he can just tell the club to **** off andwe’re bound to honor it. We were lucky he found a suitor otherwise he’d still be at the club and I doubt our list would have looked the same in 2023 if he had.

I know but the point of the post is relating to whether or not grundy was offered a pay cut to stay, your point, although valid, is irrelevant

From the scuttlebutt, I doubt he was offered the opportunity to take a pay cut. The only way we could have enabled that would have been to add extra years and spread the load is my understanding of it. We’re bound by the afl to deliver the full amount contracted is my understanding. A new club gets greater flexibility to restructure is my understanding. Being bound to a contract is hardly irrelevant to your point that we did ask him to take a cut. We wanted him gone, not tied to the club for longer. My sense was that we wanted the majority of his contract free to use in other ways.

In the end, I'm glad he's not our problem anymore

The pay cut would have needed to be significant. I believe that contract was rising to $1.1m. It was lower than the reported $950k pa in the first couple of years and then rising to be close to that $6.5m-$7m number over 7 years.

I actually feel sad in a way for him. Melbourne has humiliated him saying he needs to learn how to play a position he knows little about. That idiot Goodwin broadcasting how we treated him like rubbish and they 'valued' him. Well, we never humiliated him.

I tend to agree. Played mainly key forward as a junior I think from memory. I seem to recall though that even there he wasn’t clunking big marks though.

That's very rough. Likely eyeing a return in the back half of next season? That is an incredibly long time off, especially when just getting started.
Yeah that’s how it’s tracking.
He’s gonna obviously miss this years finals campaign but also next year preseason and most of the season. Terrible blow.

I'm interested to see how they approach it. Do they try and get a mini-preseason into him before coming back next season, given he'll be fairly underdone. Maybe pushes back his return date a bit. Not an enviable situation

I’m guessing they factor in a preseason into the 12 month rehab. I’m sure he’ll do everything that gives him the best chance of a full recovery.
