Walker had arguably his best season in 2013 playing off half back. I can't see MM being too keen to change that, regardless of who we manage to bring into the club.

Docherty's arrival will likely have more of an impact on Scotland's prospects in 2014 than Walker's.

I have a feeling that Scotland will retire if/when we sign up Docherty.

I can't see why Doc coming in would end Scotto's time with us. Doc still needs plenty of development. At Brisbane he was probably last in line as a back flanker behind Harwood and Yeo who are essentially the same age.

I hope Scotland doesn't retire zee, but in the end it will be his decision if he plays on or retires.

Quigley's pre draft write still seems very relevant:

Pick 13 - GWS

Sam Docherty
DOB 17/10/93 Ht 185 Wt 83

Initially I was surprised when EQ was talking about Docherty being one of the top 15 guys in this draft but as I went back and looked at him some more I came to appreciate that she might well be correct. Docherty’s game seems ideal for modern AFL systems and he would be very valuable piece at half back for a new young team. He was only selected for the last two games at the Champs for Vic Country and he made people sit up and take notice with a BOG performance against WA. After a pretty ordinary start to the year Docherty was a very strong performer all the way home until a hip injury tailed him off. The hip injury prevented him testing at the Combine which is a shame as I would have liked to have seen what numbers he would put up.

Docherty is an offensive HBFer. He has excellent run and carry skills and can either run through zones or kick over them. Going forward he is very heads up and will usually look to go long down the field sometimes to the exclusion of better intermediate options. Still he has the skill to exercise these long kicks well and he hits his targets. He is a right footer but has nice penetration and accuracy off either foot. He might be the best kick off his non-preferred of anyone in this draft. His kicking holds together under pressure and he has great ability to find the target with players closing him down quickly. He is a regularly taker of kick-ins because of his ability to find the target.

Defensively his strength is not in a close checking role and in fact I would say he is not very good in that role and would certainly be taken advantage of at AFL level were he to be asked to play such. He is much better in a loose read and react role which allows him to lay off and attack any ball coming into his area. He reads the ball coming in well and makes good, quick decisions about how to influence the play. He knows when to attack the ball himself, when to clear the way for his own man or when to find a player. He is a team player at the back and works well with those around him.

If the ball finds its way to an opposition player Docherty has good closing speed and works hard to shut down the threat. He is not a big tackler and some work will need to be done on his technique. Another thing he will need to work on is his engine and I am sure the AFL small forwards will work him up and back a lot to take the sting out of his attack. He has the body shape of an endurance athlete but he does not have the engine atm and there will be plenty of hard work ahead for him. He is also not particularly strong overhead but he does get up reasonably well and although he doesn’t often clunk them he does control the ball to ground well and follows quickly.

He has nice clean hands with the ball on the ground and is an exponent of the long hand ball which you don’t often see at junior level. With the ball in hand he shows really good dash and he will back himself to beat players coming out of defense. He moves through contested situations nicely often seemingly to just slide through.

Overall I would rate Docherty as the best HBF option available this year ahead of Buntine. He has superior pace and long kicking ability and is his equal in most other respects. He is probably giving a bit away to Buntine defensively but I think he will make that up with some more experience. I think he is a nice prospect who should become a good AFL player.

Docherty was selected before Brandon Ellis who is currently making a real name for himself. Hopefully Doc can do a Hendo and play his best football for us.

If the Lions want to give us another first rounder we'll happily take Mayes!

They passed on him because of attitude not talent, so he has and always will be a good player.

If you are talking just about his attitude off the field, there were other reasons he did not get drafted. Outstanding talent but major flaws with his game that really made it hard for clubs to take the risk. Most draftees do have areas of their game to work but clearly this plays into the risk profile that clubs are willing to take.

I would go for Thorpe before Garlett. From what I read, he does seem to have pulled himself together.

Offsider >>>>> Quigley

Sam Docherty

Next up on my list is Sam Docherty, a tough highly offensive HBF, who is pushing up the draft order quickly and with good reason. He is probably best available here although it gets really close with the next couple of players. He has midfield capabilities although I prefer him as a HBF.

Sam has n excellent right foot, great distance over 60m and he makes good decisions and hits targets. He can take the harder option on occasions, but most of the time it pays off bigtime, however it can badly hurt a team as well if he gets it wrong. He has good hands and is clean, solid overhead and can mark the ball quite well. Defensively he is pretty good, although I would like to see him defend a bit better sometimes, and finding the balance will take time, but he has the ability. Sam has pace, breaks the lines and loves to run with the ball, and take opponents on. He is a very good offensive player and with the zone he will be extra important. I rate him highly.
Still need to take draft profiles with a grain of salt.

Not sure what life after footy holds for Scotto but I get the feeling there isn't much planned and he'd be keen to continue his career in football.

Fireman? No, seriously, he took some courses relating to coaching a couple of years ago, so he may well go down that path.

Listening to McKay, I get the impression it's a "Let's see what the situation is post draft"

It may not be as much about Docherty coming in but rather the money left over after we've done our business in trade week.

Upshot is that I don't think we're considering Scotland before the possibility of getting some quality players in this draft. We top up, Scotland retires.

Wo

Wonder why he didnt work out? Was fairly highly rate IIRC?

Would be interested to see where we're at with Weller. Was he playing more back pocket roles when given an opportunity last season?
Him & Ayden Kennedy are the ones so far in the delisted category, or soon to be, that I wouldn't mind as possibilities for next year.

3 or 4 picks wanted in the ND and then we'll also have up to 5 rookies to list depending on how many we move on or bring onto on our primary list (though may reduce with veterans now?) if we upgrade Bell & Curnow.
Like you said, Scotland will get a bonus year only if we don't get what we're after in trade/drafts. Good call Blues.

and carlton give up on chapman, have to be effing joking

legit not too sure who the eff they are going to recruit to get the two premierships in the next two years.

But that's according to the media...
i do realize it is the media
but should have made a play for him before bomber came on. just going to aid essendon

You want to give him 300k per year for 2 years? His hamstrings are shot. Would be a massive mistake.
i dont think they are that shot to be honest, not expecting him to be a 22-25 game player, but a bit depth player would be handy. i do respect your opinion, but feel he would help fill a void

But are we going to get 22-25 games out of anyone we pick up anyway?
good point

b: Walker, Jamison, Tuohy
hb: Yarran, Watson, Simpson
m: Thomas, Mclean/Docherty , Gibbs
hf: Garlett, Waite, Robinson/Bell
f: Chapman, Henderson, Kreuzer
r: Warnock, Murphy, Judd
int: Carrazzo, Curnow, Mcinnes
sub: Menzel

finals time team like this wouldnt be too shabby

Expecting Scotland to Retire

You don't give a depth player 300K per year. And he wants a guaranteed 2 year deal. Would be very poor list management to give him what he wants.

In Rogers we trust.

Drafting isn't an exact science for every McCarthy or Mitchell in an early round that's a bust, you might pick up an Andy McInness in a later round.

Hence do we take a chance on
  1. Chapman, who we hope will play 15 games a season but retire in 2 years OR
  2. Some skinny 18yo kid with no endurance but plenty of upside who may play 5 games and be delisted or end up with his name on a locker?
My money's on option 2, though I can see a lot of people have been swayed by this "shallow draft" prognosis.
