Those comments are weird...

Ross spoke up how good cerra was a month or so ago and said 'if he (Ross) were at Carlton he'd try to manufacture an Sps for cerra deal with picks involved'

Yet Ross doesn't like cerra.... Someone's telling porkies somewhere in there.
Doesn’t bode well for SPS
I hope he stays and flourishes under the new coaching..

I honestly think this is PR narrative coming from Freo as a last-ditch attempt to keep Cerra. Remember this leak originated from a WA journalist. If a strained relationship hits the airwaves, it could create doubt from all parties (Cerra, Carlton & Ross).

If it’s to be believed Cerra comes off looking like a sulk, Ross sounds like he doesn’t rate Cerra, Carlton would have to be second guessing their potential desire for both parties.

Who is to benefit here? ie- who’s leaking. The answer is Freo.

Interesting tactic if true - this 'rumour' paints Cerra in an awful light, in my opinion; it indicates he's either unprofessional or 'conditional' at best, or a sook at worst, or has rather large tickets on himself that don't match his achievements to date, or standing in the game.

Nothing I've seen re Cerra's character indicates that any of that is true - so if you're Freo, and looking to keep him, is this in your best interests?

I dunno - just sounds like typical AFL media rubbish to me.

Carlton & Ross need to pick up the phone to Cerra and stamp it out immediately.
Agree l don't believe these comments re Cerra are factual, l don't see him as that sort of person at all, great family and believe this is just a story that lacks substance.

You may be correct, however it just seems too convenient to me. And Morris does reference Freo “sources” in his article twice.

My reading of the situation from afar suggests they are basically resigned to losing him and this is the Hail Mary attempt.

Funnily enough in that article from a few months back Ross himself talked up Cerra’s professionalism and dedication suggesting that Carlton should chase him.

No idea if true but reminds me of the barrel that Zach Merrett held over Essendon...big time tickets on himself.

Or rather than a Hail Mary attempt, an Essendon-like smear campaign.

Just popping in to give some context around these Cerra/Lyon comments.
  1. Cerra had spoken previously about preferring Longmuir's coaching style, to Ross'
  2. Ryan Daniels and co. speculated about if Lyon was appointed, it may impact Cerra's decision given he wasn't a fan of Ross' style (extrapolating on point 1.)
  3. Sam McClure and co. picked up on that and ran it a little further
  4. Tom Morris has recently also repeated this, quoting sources.
So in summary, one minor comment, has been blown out of proportion. If Cerra is heading your way (hope not), the coach is not going to impact the decision.
The media are bored in lieu of any real news.

I would hazard a guess it was Ding Dong (Bell) or someone else from Freo who leaked that rumour.

What did you think of Ross as coach for your team?

What did you think of Ross as coach for your team?
Right choice at the right time. I really feel that Ross is a great finishing coach. But shouldn't be given anymore than 3-4 years at a club.
If he can get them into a granny great, after that everyone seems burnt out and it's time to refresh, and the standards and culture have been set for the next group through.

I know you're not asking me, but some insight into Ross' coaching ability...

Put it this way... he made two basket case clubs relevant. Almost won flags with both of them. It took 2 of the greatest teams in the modern era (Cats and Hawks) to stop him. Of course there was also the bad bounce in 2010...

He is the most successful Saints coach and Freo coach in history in terms of W/L %.

He's got a lot to work with if he becomes our coach...
