Our next coach is here for a rebuild, not a title shot.

Garbage comment. He's here to win flags.

We are refreshing the list. We've still got a core group of experienced players. I think they can win the flag next year. Theres no such thing as premiership windows. You are either good enough or you arent each year.

I agree in part with this.

Our new coach should be about winning a flag. The idea of a 5 year rebuild whilst wallowing at the bottom of the ladder is BS and fraught with danger. Refresh is probably a better term for what the better clubs tend to do and what we require at present. A year or two acquiring some high draft picks (don't have to be top 3 picks) whilst giving opportunities to younger players whilst also maintaining onfield standards and strong core group.

I also think in general the better clubs are far more ruthless with fringe players and try to open up "development" spots in their best 22 far better than we have done. We've continued to back in experienced role players ahead of talented juniors.

I think there's no reason why in a year or two we can't be catapulting back up the ladder.

With regards to premiership windows, I like the concept as a guide, but I think we can get too hung up on whether a team's in a "window". I think being in the "window" effectively describes when you're list appears primed for a premiership, a core group between 24-30 with a couple of genuine stars and quality across all lines. I think it helps dictate list management strategy, as you're entering "a window" you should be looking to bring in quality, trading out draft picks to fill "needs". As your "window" closes, ie your players get older or you lose key planks to other clubs, you need to be looking to stockpile draft picks and refresh the list. Premierships are funny things though, being in a "window" doesn't mean you're going to win a premiership, but by the same token not being in a "window" doesn't mean you can't have a good year.

For mine, "premiership window" is probably an imperfect term for rating where your list is at and how you should be managing your list. Unfortunately I think it gets used as an "excuse" for lowering expectations and standards for performance, which leads to clubs being basketcases for years on end like Melbourne, Carlton, Gold Coast, St Kilda...

The thing with Hart is that he barely did anything if his personal presentation and the performance of the forward line was anything to go by. As useless as he is, his negative influence pales in comparison to Burton/Campo/Pyke.
I still have a feeling he'll be moved on. He is out of contract isn't he?

Yup, plus there is that wierd rule where we have to notify we're planning on extending him in August by memory?

I'd say he'll be shuffled as well when all is said and done.

To a degree I think you’re right mate and 12mths ago looking in hindsight would have been better. But now looking forward at least the tough calls have been made and that’s all that matters going fwd. Bring on 2020 and the dawning of a new era

Like I said before, he couldn't see the forest for the trees. It wasn't until he made a throw away line at the end of the season and he got this HUGE backlash on twitter and on the radios (I can't even remember what he said now) that it seemed to jolt him into reality. Once that happened, the external review was announced within days.
I personally don’t think those 2 things were linked. External review was always coming and Roo’s ‘comment’ was a throw away line from a bloke extremely under the pump. To which he also retracted and apologized.

From the info I had, this was never ever in doubt really. Great result. Shows Roo can make the tough calls and I'm backing him to nail these 4 vacant roles.
He didnt make any tough calls. He handballed it

Couldn't protect Burton any longer once the decision got taken out of his hands and went to the board. They'd listen to Roo, but when when that panel came in and said Burton was a problem then theres nothing Roo can say that'd make them change their minds.

Fagan is on record as saying the new coach has the opportunity to bring a coach alongside him (replacing Campo) "of his own choosing"

Let's see if that eventuates
Didn't mention Hart, which was slightly concerning. Sounds like we're keeping him as the forwards coach, or he's gonna have to accept the SANFL position he didn't want.

Also they kind of have a loophole there too. If it's anything like Pyke, he gets the shortlist of guys and picks from there. Pyke wanted Longmuir, but he didn't make the shortlist cause he wanted too much cash. So did Pyke get to pick his own assistant? Chapman would say he did because Pyke picked from the list, but he didn't decide who got shortlisted and the guy he wanted wasn't on there.

Did he really? It was a very superficial apology, apologising for how his comments were interpreted not the comments themselves, to which he actually doubled down and further attempted to justify the original statement.

The issue wasn't so much what he said, its just that it didn't need to be said at all. Everyone knows there's some ugly elements of the fan base and the Crows are by no means alone there, its part and parcel with the territory. Doesn't mean its right, but probably not a lot you can do about it, but when your club has just missed the finals for the 2nd year in a row having entered both seasons as flag favourites, there was no need to go out and attack your fan base, even if it is a small element of it.

The fans/members were hurting and his comments had a large portion of them questioning whether he meant them. Its where a true leader comes out and doesn't try to lay blame, they accept responsibility(whether its their fault or not), apologises, asks/implores interested parties to back them in and promises that no stone will be left unturned to fix the issues.

stop making so much sense!

It'll be interesting how it plays out. I've been told that at least one of the prospective candidates effectively gave the club an ultimatum that if he were to accept the job, he'd be brining in his own assistant coaching panel.

Wouldn't surprise if we found a way to shuffle a few people around. There's also the issue that most assistants will be locked in by now and very difficult to poach. It might be a case of having to wait 12 months.

I'm not sure we have to say a definitive "yes or no" in August, but 3 options - yes, you are getting a new contract; no, you're not; or maybe. Which is the purpose of that rule, to give people notice about their job security so they can line something up. Someone who is told "maybe" is still entitled to go looking.

Anyway - on the whole coach / timing thing - we now have 3 key positions to fill - coach, assistant(Campo) and Head of Football (Burton). Plus quite possibly at least one more assistant. And that's before we get to the Culture and Leadership person or whatever it is. There's a lot of interaction / overlap between those roles, the selection criteria and the lists of candidates. I'd reckon they've got the coach all but nailed down, but they might want to sort at least some of those other pieces before making announcements. They probably don't want to start out on a series of individual appointments/announcements if they can avoid it. Hopefully just a matter of practicality.

Hopefully part of this delay is sorting the assistant they bring, the end result could potentially be who comes as the best package? You would take a good optin with an equally good assistant over a slightly better option with no decent assistant.
If you think about it... they have been looking for a senior coach, a senior coaching assistant and a Director of Football.... also with an eye to looking for someone to fill the new position. They’ve been busy!
