There have been 3, and 3 only, dynasties in the history of Football, in the true sense of the word: Pies in the 20s, Dees in the 50s, Hawks in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Winning 3 in a row, followed by a runners up, is amazing, especially in the modern era, but still doesn't count. You have to sustain it. And that seems impossible in this day and age.....

Throw in that we played in every finals series bar one from 1997 till 2001 including one Preliminary Final and the Dynasty becomes a 8 year instead of a 4 year.

And if you want to go pre merger the Bears played in the 1995 and 1996 finals series missing out on the minor premiership in 96 with the last game loss and losing both years to the eventual premiers.

So 1995 to 2004, a 10 year dynasty as you call it is not to bad.

1995, 1 Final, 0 Wins 1 Loss, Qualifying Final
1996, 3 Finals, 2 Wins 1 Loss, Preliminary Final
1997, 1 Fianl, 0 Wins 1 Loss, Qualifying Final
1998 N/A
1999, 3 Finals, 2 Wins 1 Loss, Preliminary Final
2000, 2 Final, 1 Win 1 Loss, Semi Final.
2001, 3 Finals, 3 Wins 0 Losses, Premiership
2002, 3 Finals, 3 Wins 0 Losses, Premiership
2003, 4 Finals, 3 Wins 1 Loss, Premiership
2004, 3 Finals, 2 Wins 1 Loss, Runners Up

Yep, not too bad, but do you really want me to reel out more Hawk dynasty statistics like that? Because you will lose.....

This whole thread is flawed! You can't really compare what the Lions achieved with great Melbourne, Collingwood or Hawthorn teams of the past. How can you argue who is better or who achieved more when the game is completely different. Travel, salary cap, draft - apples, oranges, orangutangs. I'm happy to consider our 2001-2004 team the greatest team in the modern era. That is, since the inception of a national comp. We are the modern day yardstick of greatness.

Let's all compromise and agree that the 2001-2004 era Lions were the best team in AFL or professional team in history, instead of comparing two different eras. Better than the Hawks of the late 80s/early90s, Eagles of early 90s, Kangas and Crows of the late 90s and Essendon of the turn of the century... Okay? :thumbsu: Good

I think the only people who would think that Lions team is the greatest ever would be Lions supporters themselves, and people who weren't even alive during the 70s and 80s. Even your coach I'm sure wouldn't agree! :)

No I grew up watching the Hawks in the 80's so I know how great they were. I was just showing that our run was a little longer then the 4 years that were getting talked about.

7 Grand finals in a row speaks for itself with the Hawks:cool:

Fair enough man. :):thumbsu:
Let's just say that Lions side was easily the best side since the Hawks of that era!

Every team has the salary cap. Every team travels. Every team drafts.

Whats your point? How did it make it harder for you?

The Melbourne in the 50's were probably the best team ever. Pure dominance. They lasted a full decade more or less.

I agree with that. It's a bit like comparing Makybe Diva to Phar Lap. Impossible to do and you could ask 100 different people and get 100 different answers.

I will be cheering hard for the Hawks tonight Roddy. I would love to see a Geelong V Hawthorn Grand Final 1/2 as good as 89 but there is a lot of water to go under the bridge yet (Collingwood, Port and Kangaroos will love to have something to say about this comment).

Thanks, LB. Look for me in the stands!

You really think the game was the same in the 50s as it is now?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Lions team is better or we somehow had it harder. Just don't think you can compare different eras who played in completely different conditions. I can't see any team dominating the game for a decade in the way that Melbourne did in my lifetime under the current AFL set up. So under that setup we are have had the best team so far. Agreed?

How would Bradman have gone facing Warne? Who bloody knows. Both were great though.

The only team that comes close to the lions is the norm smith's team. Collingwood's 4 were based on the farcical system of challenge after losing and hawthorn's were based on cheque book football plus being gifted a highly fertile zone that coughed up players like Mathews and Tuck. Come to think of it the pies even in that era were able to go out and buy(thanks to John Wren), any player they liked as well. No one will come near to the lions achievements for a very long time. (Unless the cat's can string it together over the next few years,:))

Utter deluded nonsense. Twist it any way you like, 8 in 20, versus 3 in 4, wins every single time without fail....

Nothing to do with the giving of comfort. Everything to do with the definition of true Football greatness, which is sustaining it over a serious period of time. Most teams will arse their way into a good 3 or 4 year period, some will take better advantage of it than others. But VERY few will keep it going for decades....

Those old battlers, Fitzroy won 7 over 24 years, not quite your 8 in 20 but they have never been touted as the greatest, but hey it was the era of horse and carts and cable trams. I'm sure many team supporters could cobble together winning streaks, (Pies, Blues, Port Adelaide), but it's not about number fudging, it's about great teams, and the Lions were it.

Many neutral observers remarked after our third flag that the Lions were the greatest team ever. To have achieved such in an era designed to equalize the competition is simply incredible. Hawks were a great team in the 80's but can't compare to the rampaging Lions outfit of '99-'04. I do respect them but please don't try and compare them to the Lions, ditto Melbourne and Collingwood.

As the OP says our record of 3 straight AFL flags is safe and likely to never be broken. Thus our reputation as the greatest team ever is fully intact.

Thanks Collingwood:thumbsu:

Ha!! Another delusional Lion! :D

Don't thank us. Thank the retention benefits ;)

Kidding..........

argue all you like there is only one team with a three peat in the national comp. if you want to start talking about old state comps ports record would stack up with the best. Hawks the pies and demons were awsome in the comp they played. You cant compare eras. leigh mathews would get a kick in todays game. But you have to remember he is about fifty years old

So if you can't compare generations, why is everyone on this brisbane board saying they are the best EVER?

In all fairness to the dye hard hawks supporter I think he/she is confused between team and club success. The hawks run was up there for a club but a teams success is determined by how many they win. Remember 3 aces beats an ace and two kings any day.:)

Seeya round Lions. I can understand you guys having to cling to something up there in Thugby territory, but you can't debate the deluded. You can talk about eras, salary caps and team vs club all you like, but at the end of the day, numbers wins, every single time. I'll take 8 over 3 every day of the week, every year, for ever....
