I think you’re probably right tbh. I’d wager that if anyone had been willing to take Kennedy and Owies off their hands they might have had the room, but with the lack of interest there’s probably just not enough room in their cap to add Houston right now.
I'm not as convinced cap space is a major issue for them. There's ways of creating cap space.

The main reason they couldn't offload Owies was the price he put on his head.

If Carlton were motivated enough they could re-shop Owies with the caveat of part-paying his salary for a period of time which would still free up cap space for them.

I don't trust that vile, iniquitous horde of sub-human ferals and feel they will push hard again for Houston.

This has already been thoroughly debunked as being absolute horse-shit, fabricated for clicks by muckrakers in the media.

Nobody wants Owies because he's not particularly good.

He is also not contributing to any salary cap issues for them because he's out of contract.

Keeping him & Kennedy at arm's length was them holding cap space for a possible run at Houston, yeah?

So you're willing to give pick 6 and ?? for Rioli but Noble isnt worth pick 23. Cameron will blink first.

Yeah it makes little sense

Regardless of Hardwick's bias for Rioli, Rioli and Noble are the same age, statistically nigh on idential.

Rioli is obviously a classier/more skilful player, which is why the gap between 6 and 23 is about right

If Rioli is worth 6 in this specific trade scenario (he's definitely not worth 6 in general), then Noble is 100% worth 23

Collingwood list boss Justin Leppitsch says the soaring value of a first-round pick held by Gold Coast is making it “complicated and messy” for the Magpies to bring across Dan Houston.
Leppitsch said a deal with Port Adelaide and the Suns involving Houston, Jack Lukosius and Magpies defender John Noble was up to its 30th variation, as the Power demanded a higher price than the Pies were currently willing to pay.

In his first off-season as list manager, Leppitsch said the Magpies had to strike a “fine balance” between pursuing Houston and prioritising “the future of the footy club”.
Complicating matters further is that the dual All-Australian halfback is yet to nominate a preferred destination, with Carlton and North Melbourne remaining interested.

“We’re hoping to get it done, but it’s not going to be easy. That’s the difficult part, getting everyone happy on the deal. We’ve got all these players involved, who are all contracted, and can stay at their own homes, so I guess everyone is holding the card where they can keep that particular player,” Leppitsch told AFL Trade Radio on Friday.

“I’m not sure … we’re a little bit different, because Dan hasn’t nominated a club, so it’s not like he’s definitely coming to us, whereas John (Noble) has got a destination he wants to go, and Jack Lukosius knows where he wants to go.
“It is getting complicated, and messy at stages, so there is a lot to work through.”

Leppitsch said the Suns’ no. 13 pick, which Port Adelaide wants as part of a trade for Houston, initially looked like an easy get as part of a trade for Noble, but now has multiple suitors.

“At the start, pick 13 was just going to be an easy part of the deal for Nobes, along with other things of course,” he said.

“But now, given the fact it comes a number of other clubs wanting it, Gold Coast probably realises the value it actually has, it unlocks probably more value than what it actually is. Whoever gets a hold of it can do a lot of things with it. Hence why it’s more than just that pick.”

The Power also reportedly want the Suns’ no. 23 pick as part of a Houston deal even if it includes Collingwood forward Joe Richards, which Leppitsch suggested the Pies were not willing to part with if they secured that pick in the Noble deal.
He said they were mindful of being armed with the picks needed to secure father-son prospect Tom McGuane in 2025, which would be done under the league’s stricter rules coming in next season.

“We’d like to (keep a high draft pick), and that’s probably where the arm wrestle comes in,” Leppitsch said.

“Give up all your draft hand for one player, or go a different tact? That’s where it’s going to come down to for us.

“It’s a very fine balance. We’re respecting that, and we know the value of that, but the future of the footy club is most important.”

Hoping that Houston changes tack & nominates us.

Sounds like we are prepared to walk away, because we aren't prepared to sell the farm for one player over the future of the club

The one player that can win us the silverware next year?

A pick like 23 wouldn't be selling the farm in my opinion, and doesn't Fly want established players now instead of draft picks that could be hit or miss?

That's all posturing

In the end, our F1 is easily worth their Pick 13. Gold Coast wants more in next year's draft. They want our F1 because it makes sense for them

It's coming down to what they and we think Noble is worth.

My guess is we're waiting on the Rioli situation

I don't get how holding a pick that we didn't have in the first place is selling the future of the club. Gain Houston, lose Noble, Richards, F1 is a good outcome.
Just going by what Leppa said.
We want to get into the first round of this draft

You can't put them in the same category because Kennedy is contracted and Owies isn't. Owies they could just not re-sign, to save the space, but Kennedy they would have to actually move. Lewis Young is the other one they've been trying to move, as he's contracted.
