Yeah 2009. Getting Luke Ball in was unbelievably stressful.

Also, trading away Stephenson and Treloar for a packet of chips was nightmare fuel.
How did Luke Ball get to us in the draft? I was a bit young to even be into drafting a list management back then so it was a shock to me that we just somehow got him. I see we got him with pick 30, why did nobody else take him until then?

Don’t think Rioli is worth pick 6 and by offering this GC have bumped up up Noble’s value themselves. Just don’t how see how Rioli can be valued at 6 but given that’s what GC have offered then they can give us 23 or 29 plus a sweetener.
It's irrelevant.

Different player. If he's bumped up Noble's value what's Houston now worth?

Luke Ball 2009? Realise not in volume of names but that was like a soap opera right up until the draft

Lol Saints
To my recollection we offered Saints 30 plus Goldsack .

We ended up using 30 at the draft on ball and in a nice ironic touch Goldy kicked the first goal in the GF replay

I'll never forget the anxiety of the 2009 National Draft when we were hoping Ball would slip to Pick 30 (our first pick in the draft).

There was some talk at the time that Melbourne were interested in Ball and for a moment I thought he was going to be selected at Pick 18, but Melbourne opted for Luke Tapscott instead. Biggest sigh of relief I can remember in my life 🤣

Well we actually could have had pick 11 until we traded it for Schultz, who from memory would have been a free agent this year. We went early and overpaid I think. I like Schultz but we should have waited a year. Coulda / shoulda ... whatever easy in hindsight.

This trade period is turning into high farce. Being stage managed by the AFL to drag it our as long as it can. Player agents soaking it all up for their 5 minutes of fame.

Its all so tedious.

Player movement needs to be much easier.

Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve - it’s all speculation.

Had Schultz stayed at Freo this year, he may have kicked 60 goals and cost an even higher trade price. He may kick 60 next year! Who knows? You can’t change one variable and expect everything else to remain a constant.

Question marks over his groins, didn’t do a medical with anyone, put a price tag on his head….. but st kilda reneged on a trade we had for him during trade week

He put a big salary on his head

I still remember all that going down in the last 20 minutes. I think Treloar was still a Pie when it officially ended and then it flashed up a trade was still being processed. Was actually in a bit of shock sitting there watching it
I'm so thankful every day that I was already at a bar when the deadline hit and that news came through.

He basically said he would retire if he didn’t get to Collingwood and refused to talk to any clubs that enquired about him.

Think it was speculated we eventually offered 30 + Wellingham and they still didn’t want to do the deal.

Thankfully; they were vindicated and got to play Brett ****ing Peake through the midfield on Grand Final day against us 🤗

We offered Pick 30 and Goldsack

Saints played serious hardball

We and Ball called their bluff and he put a price on his head and made it publicly very clear he wanted to come to Collingwood

He walked to the pre-season draft and we used pick 30 on him and obviously kept Goldsack

Then the beautiful poetry of beating St.Kilda in the Grand Final that same season

He put a price on his head which clubs had to pick up. From memory it was very heavily front ended. Not everyone would’ve had the cap space to fit his first year in.

Yep I was present at the draft for that one. So tense!

Can anyone remember a bigger trade period emotional rollercoaster for us than this one?

We have at various times been linked seriously to Bailey Smith, Christian Petracca, James Peatling, Dan Houston and even speculatively to Clayton Oliver.

Thank goodness for Perryman. He may be all we end up.
