This is such a sleight of hand (by media probably). Its them saying the Richards trade is for pick 39 unilaterally. Richards has proven he is afl grade is not old. You cant buy someone like that for pick 39 unless the other club wants to let them go.
He’s uncontracted and a 20-30 list fit with us. 39 is fair value.

From Marc McGowan in the Age:

The Dan Houston trade saga could prove to be a line-in-the-sand moment for clubs that have increasingly lost ground to players since free agency was introduced.

Longer-term contracts in the free agency age have gifted star footballers incredible security, yet they have still been able to force their way out of contracts to get to their club of choice.

In this case, Houston is contracted for four more seasons at Port Adelaide, as this masthead revealed in July.

The back-to-back All-Australian defender wants to play for Collingwood and not North Melbourne, which is the sticking point in this situation.

The Kangaroos are desperate to bring Houston in, to deliver their first big-name recruit in more than a decade, and have better assets to do it than the Pies.

The Power are happy to accommodate Houston’s request to play in black and white, as long as the deal is commensurate to his value.

Houston’s original suitors Melbourne were willing to hand over this year’s first-round pick and their future one in preliminary discussions between the clubs, at a time the Demons were still on track to play finals.

Houston had a change of heart on joining the Demons after Christian Petracca’s grievances with the club were played out publicly.

The reason the three-way deal with Gold Coast, Collingwood and Port Adelaide broke down on Monday night was because the Power see Houston’s return as effectively picks 13 and 29, which they do not think is fair.

The Power privately accept that the Suns’ pick 23 will be part of the deal that reunites Daniel Rioli with his former coach Damien Hardwick on the Gold Coast, but something will have to give if Houston is to become a Magpie.

At least one of picks 13 or 29 will almost certainly need to be improved upon for Houston to change clubs, unless he is willing to head to Arden Street to play for North under Alastair Clarkson.
At least the Age article provides some context on what Port wants - an upgrade on 13 or 29
Will the Suns swap 29 for 23?

Id say its a good deal for them. If it came down to it hed play for us again next year happily.
There is some goodwill on our part in swapping him for 39. I think we could also ask for more if we wanted.
My main point is that you dont get to just pocket the goodwill/surplus and go arms length on the rest of the trade. Its part of a package deal so it balances out in the wash.

Looks like JFN will be on a back flank for the pies next season
And Dev Robertson in for a late pick

Nah

Still reckon this gets done

a) For it to get this far, Houston clearly wants out way more than is being let on
b) Even an amended version of the alleged deal is an incredible deal for Gold Coast. They won't want to give that up
c) If North was actually a realistic option that Houston was ok with, he would have gone to North by now
d) We're still ultimately basing all this on info from peddlers who have already provided misinformation and shown a clear agenda
e) This is all a commercial venture. The Houston deal is the centrepiece of this shitshow and the AFL wants its commercial partners (and in turn them) to benefit from it to the maximum, which means our deal most likely waits until the last minute

I'd be pretty shocked if this doesn't go through (if it hasn't already behind the scenes)

If Port Adelaide is genuinely a football club that can be dictated to by Kane Cornes and Social Media then they're doomed to wander the football success wilderness for the rest of eternity

are cash incentives OK to add in trades?

As in Pies will give Port 200K a year during Lukosius contract to help reduce his burden on the board members pockets.

When Geelong got Cameron... media not so loud.

Now that Collingwood is involved, board members, media and pundits are all up and arms.

Anti-Collingwood is real.

AFL better be watching. Verbal agreed trade concepts to be turned around because Board members aren't fully happy is so personal and subjective. It's a bad look.

Houston needs to just declare he wants Pies, only way to force their hands. Also tell GC to suck eggs with Noble if this falls through. GC needs to offer 23 instead of 29, OR Port gets their F1 removed from the table.

If I got overruled by the board in doing my job Id quit

McCrae needs ready players.

Window is open for another run for premiership
Fly doesn't realise we don't have much capital to play with though. Even if we went for other players like baraas and smith we still would fall short. We have no choice now to take what we can get from noble/Richards and head to the draft.

Can possibly get Tomlinson and Hayes but that's about it

Edmund repeating the same information, but says we have no idea where this is heading. So he could be a Pie still and they’re just throwing around BS.

No one really knows at the moment

Though I be Exploring the Robertson Trade IF we are Interested

Do you think he was being funny? Clearly went over your head because he was deadly seroius! Still hanging on 'The Scouts' every word? Now that's being sucked in!
Everyone knows he was being funny except for you, Drax 👍🏻

Exactly.

The fact the news of Port board didn't like it is a FAILURE of Port managers.

This screams of Cornes making a phone call to Port Board and leaking it out.

If Board is not happy with their assigned or approved List Manager's decisions then it needs to stay internally.... it weakens List Manager's position in future trades... like why wouldn't another team request a board member to be part of the list management now?

Yeah he does. He is in the meetings and sees the list managers objectives and constraints.

But still, McCrae already have a few under 22 year olds to worry about getting games or development... he wants someone to be able to play without training wheels on.

Premiership aspirations rely on veterans.

Incredibly, not only does GC get the best deal in the rejected trade as it currently stands, they can fix it and get it over the line at no additional cost to themselves by merely fixing their deal with Richmond to be less of (but still) a bizarre overpayment for Rioli.

Take 23 out of the Rioli deal and swap it for 29 in the Lukosius deal.
