Why isn’t the WC board vetoing the pick 3 exchange with Carlton as their fans are furious?

Isn’t that how yo do it nowadays rather than let your employed list managers deal?

Reports saying Houston wants to play for us.
If that is true, him nominating us might help the trade being pushed through. Port and North may not want a player that has openly stated his preference is us. However he is a professional and still getting paid. I think we are still slight favourites with Port 2nd and North 3rd. Say 45% us, 35% Port, 20% North.

McCrae needs ready players.

Window is open for another run for premiership

Want and need is two different things.

Debateable - we finished 9th and are even older next year.

Also has to be some query in Mitchell and De Goey getting up and going fully.

Backline feels a big defender short.

McStay and Checkers together is a big plus, but again injury has started to bite one or the other.

There’s no doubt our best last year was good enough to be amongst the final four and it’s an even competition, but I think we are actually more likely to stay out of the top 4 then get back into it. Just on looking at it critically. But it’s all a gamble either way.

Yeah I get it, but Carlton are supposed to be a top 4 contender and was top 4 premiership candidate last season... and now they have a top 5 pick.

Pies can take a season off, rest Naicos every second game and tank for a top 5 pick if there is a real can't miss stud.

Tanking is unfortunately a strategy, even for teams that don't need it.
I'm confused
On SEN West Coast supporters are spewing on the deal.

Seems Carlton won that trade

I just can’t understand why they’d be so intent on putting their eggs in one basket in such an even draft.
Last time they had two mid first round picks they got Curnow and McKay. Last time they had pick 3 they got Paddy Dow.
They could have obtained Houston for less than they’ve paid for pick 3. It’s a really strange move in my book.

Surely their lack of a chase for Houston indicates their salary is fit to burst, and they have to sign De Konig next year. I guess Houston's commanding 800k-plus?

Carlton have sold the farm for pick 3. Would want to get the pick right
Yea, the upside can be great if they get a Serong type for example. But still also massive downside if it ends up a Will Phillips/Paddy Dow type.

Meanwhile Houston is already elite and HBFs with great kicks can play well into their 30s (ie Zorko/Hurn)

Take Haynes out of the Carlton side then too.

Perryman is at no cost besides cap space. There is no outgoing there. He is irrelevant to the cost of our forgone draft capital and departing players.

if you are contending or a top 4 team cap space is more important than draft capital. spending it on role players is a hug risk.

Pies literally just signed 25 year old and trying for a 28 year old to extend the window. Pies are doing a Geelong and Swans rebuild.... basically top 8 while finding replacements and young guns
