I think the following list changes with approximate salaries shall be freed up come October 31st this year:

1. Scott Pendlebury: retire with ($650,000)
2. Steele Sidebottom: retire with ($600,000)
3. Nathan Murphy: likely enforced concussion retirement ($550,000)
4. WHE: pushed into retirement ($475,000)
5. Nathan Kreuger: delisted ($300,000)
6. A Johnson: to be traded ($350,000)
7. A Begg: likely delisting $150,000

Total Cap Relief: $3,000,000 approx

A combo of either Carmichael, Bytel, Eyre, Markov or Sullivan whose contracts expire this year may be let go depending on form. We all know some of the above savings shall be parlayed into other existing player contract spikes for 2025 and above. But with little premium draft capital (a future 2025 first rounder only) available, the club needs to pull all remaining recruiting levers to bring in talent.

Free Agents of Appeal:

Hugh McCluggage: worth asking the question
W. Hayward: gun player
Ollie Florent: top player
Harry Perryman: underrated
Tim English: won't happen given Grundy contract fracas and Ruckmen rating
Liam Duggan: has upside
Ben Ainsworth: bit similar to what we have but FREE Agent
Isaac Cumming: underrated
Cam Zurhaar: effective but plays like McCreery
Tom Hawkins: why not? :)
Tyson Stengle: AA in first year at Cats
Connor Nash: popular option in this thread
Jack Graham: great to get one back on the Tigers aka 1983
J. Battle: handy replacement for Nathan Murphy if that arises

Out of Contract Targets:

Bailey Smith: Great replacement for Steele
Max Holmes: Likewise
Logan McDonald: would cost a motza but can always dream
Alex Davies: Big bodied Gold Coast prodigy getting squeezed out
Ned Moyle: Next big thing in the Ruck for life post Cox and D Cameron support
Denver Grainger Barass: Former top 10 pick on the nose at Hawks
Will Phillips: Former pick 3 getting squeezed out of selection
Dougal Howard: Has ability but on the nose at Saints
Rhylee West: being played out of position and has midfield upside

Controversial Bargains:

Tarryn Thomas: I can hear the objections as I type
Taylor Walker: Free Agent and for 20-35 games may keep us in the hunt

Welcome your thoughts on the above but do feel we have to maximise our current "Kerb appeal" as a destination club and land some genuine talent.

I can’t help thinking we have a thread for this type of discussion already 🤔

stormskye great point you raise re “WHE’s $475k” and I’m pretty confident that average wage goes beyond $500k in 2025. I also don’t believe $3m is much of a war chest. With the ebb and flow of contract management across a list most clubs would open up that much space year to year.

That said Smith, Phillipou and Reid are the three I’d be going hard at. Smith to add pace around the contest, Phillipou will be a gun and is the only top rated player from his draft yet to extend and Reid is going to be gettable just like JHF was so get to the front of that queue!

They did at the time.

Not by me.

And further to that the welcome Bobby Hill thread for Hill was by and large positive.
Only 1 person up to my post thought we could of held out and haggled more given pies were in the box seat and it was done asap in trade week.

Just trawled the lists of out of contract and free agency players again. Personally these are the names that are worth having a look and generally wouldn’t cost the world:

-Lachie sholl

-Archie Perkins (unlikely and expensive)

-Sam Sturt

-Tyson Stengle (UFA - free hit and would be awesome with Hill/Schultz)

-Max Holmes (possible, but expensive)

-Alex Davies

-Ned Moyle

-Bodhi Uwland

-Brayden George

-Will Phillips

-Bailey Scott

-Cameron Zurhaar

-Thomas Scully

-Noah Cumberland

-Matt Coulthard

-Jack Graham

-Charlie Clarke

-Bailey Smith (possible but fairly expensive)

-Rhylee West

-Buku Khamis

I purposely left off a few who I reckon are unattainable given our picks and/or the likelihood of them leaving (ie Phillipou/Logan McDonald/Rowbottom). Also there’s a bit of bias there in relation to a couple of my fav’s from their draft year (ie Charlie Clarke).

Not much from a key position perspective other than Thomas Scully unfortunately.

The ones who really interest me from our teams perspective (other than the obvious ones being Holmes/Smith) are Stengle (just an absolute free hit), Zurhaar (same as Stengle although RFA), Khamis, Graham, George, Phillips and Moyle.

Duggan unrestricted FA, elite and costs nothing.

Not to us they're not! They're seeing the threat coming from the two WA clubs
Well he's from WA, so that's where that link is from. I just read that they aren't confident about keeping him, so he could end up anywhere.

Dockers are pretty stacked with tall forwards. Can't see the attraction to Eagles, lol.

Based on all that, I can't see why we wouldn't be talking to him.

Course we'll be pitching at him but $$$ and draft picks count for McDonald and Freo is stacked with both. Don't think we'd be giving him a longterm million dollar contract like they can.

He was also a big pies fan growing up prior to being drafted.

doubt we’d have the currency to be in discussions
