Bewildering!

Houston is arguably the best kick in the game (certainly kicking out of defence) but apparently we don’t need him because we’ve got 5-gamer Parker and 0-gamer DeMattia coming into our backline mix.
He was only AA in 2023 and 2024.

You're dreaming if you think you can get Houston with 3 years left on his contract for a F1 and Noble. That's basically the price we paid for Schultz and Houston >>>>>>> Schultz.

Houston is close to Petracca levels trade cost and there is a reason we no longer talk about Petracca as a target
What you’re really saying here is that you don’t think we can get 12 for Noble because our F1 and 12 is going to be better than any competitor aside from North. If Rioli is getting 6 then Noble gets 12.

In a normal market Houston and Petracca aren’t far apart, but there’s a rawness to the Petracca one that would make Melbourne particularly difficult to work with not to mention that Port would still have the golden trio. Take Petracca from the Dees and it’s time to rebuild.

If you think Noble is worth pick 12, Rioli pick 6, then Houston is worth pick 2-3 at least. The only one who can satisfy that is North who have offered their F1.

Seriously have a read of what you've been saying. You say Houston would instantly be our second best player behind Naicos. Do you then think we would be willing to trade out any lesser players like Moore/JDG for a F1 projected around pick 10 in a weak draft plus whatever draft capital on traded from a Noble equivalent? It would be the equivalent of us trading Moore to Carlton for their F1 and Kennedy.

Realistically we're not getting Noble for pick 12 without other picks involved and most likely our F1. We would do well to get Pick 12 and 20 for Noble and our F1. That's barely more than we gave up for Schultz and not enough for Houston.

No one is saying we don't need him. It's that we can't afford him because we have no draft capital to trade. If we did, we might still be in the conversation for Petracca.

If Schultz cost us pick 10 and a second rounder. What will 2x AA Houston cost when we've already traded out pick 10? We're not getting him for F1 and Noble.

I mean you’re not projecting a real ‘want’ vibe so sounds like you wouldn’t even want to part with one first rounder.

If we were seriously interested there are ways to make it work. Trade extra capital to get access to pick 12 this year, trade our future 1st with later picks coming back so we have capital for McGuane etc. We can get creative with it.

Anyway it doesn’t sound like that’s the way the club is going, so be it. But let’s not pretend we’re not missing out on an elite player.

And actually if I can’t appeal to your rational brain let’s try the emotional one. What is the biggest thing that Carlton struggles with with their gameplan? It’s creativity off half back. It’s either boundary kick to Curnow/Mckay/TDK or it’s a 1-2 with Saad with a predictable running pattern. Put Houston there and assuming Cripps stays at his level and unfortunately they’d actually contend next year… now if we get Perryman and it forces Port to keep Houston it’s a job half done ;)

Almost everyone wants a Ferrari, but almost everyone only have money for a Kia.... in this case you just make sure you buy the right Kia.

Petracca >>>>>>>>>>> Houston. When Houston wins a Norm Smith I'll apologize for this post (which he won't ever do). Be happy it looks likely we're going to get get Perryman. I'll take Perryman any day of the week over Houston, who has never indicated he wants to go to Collingwood, while furthermore the last thing we should be doing is give away future first picks.

I like to pot Bucks the coach as much I can but I don’t think it’s fair to hold him to account of list management decisions when he wasn’t in charge of list management. Given how little he played Armstrong and Russell I’m not sure they were his idea either.
That’s why I only potted him for playing Madge Ben Crocker and brown brothers going sideways and backwards

Hi lads. Not sure how much weight to put on the Houston rumour, but if true & given your limited draft hand, would Harvey Harrison possibly be put on trade table?

Apparently according to Essendon supporters, MacKay was going to add the finishing touches to a premiership this year. Not only did Essendon not win the premiership this year they failed to make finals. In the Essendon games I attended this year, MacKay spent most of his time standing at the full back line gazing at the stars while the ball spent all its time down the other end of the ground. Not bad for a guy on a million dollars a year. So you honestly think Houston is going to mean the difference of a premiership next year at Carlton? Think again. There's a reason Cripps polled 45 votes in the Brownlow medal, mainly because Cripps has next to nothing support from the other Carlton mids when the ball is bounced.

Agree with the math. And I would concede, if we particularly take into account our first round drafting history, maybe we would be better off trading it for an established player.

I've always felt that the Pies haven't made great decisions in the first round, but hadn't looked at the data, so I went and looked at our track record in the past 24 years (yes, got a bit obsessed). It does not look flattering especially outside top 10 picks, F/S and NGA. I look at 2012 (ex Grundy), 2013 and 2020 in particular as big failures.

For whoever is interested (otherwise please feel free to ignore):

2000: Pick 3, Alan Didak (PASS, TOP 10)
2001: Pick 11, Richard Cole (FAIL)
2002:
2003: Pick 17, Billy Morrison (FAIL)
2004: Pick 10, Chris Egan (FAIL)
2005: Pick 2 Daisy Thomas (PASS, TOP 10) and Pick 5 Scott Pendlebury (PASS, TOP 10)
2006: Pick 8 Ben Reid (PASS, TOP 10) and Pick 10 Nathan Brown (PASS, TOP 10)
2007:
2008: Pick 11 Sidebottom (PASS)
2009:
2010:
2011:
2012: pick 18 Brody Grundy (PASS), 19 Ben Kennedy (FAIL), 20 Tim Broomhead (FAIL)
2013: pick 6 Matthew Scharenberg (FAIL), pick 10 Nathan Freeman (FAIL)
2014: pick 5 Jordy De Goey (PASS, TOP 10), pick 9 Darcy Moore (PASS, F/S)
2015:
2016:
2017: pick 6 Jaidyn Stephenson (other than the first year, FAIL)
2018: pick 13 Isaac Quaynor (PASS, NGA)
2019:
2020: pick 17 Ollie Henry (FAIL - but likely ends up a pretty good player for Geelong), 19 Fin Macrae (FAIL), 23 Reef McInnes (FAIL)
2021: pick 4 Nick Daicos (PASS, TOP 10 AND F/S)
2022: pick 19 Ed Allan (?)
2023: pick 25 Harry De Mattia (?)
Maybe we would be better getting a replacement recruitment officer?

I hope you’re right but I think you’re wrong. Essendon has not won a final in 20 years and their ladder position has been hugely inflated the past two seasons. Carlton is not as far as I’d like, at least until Cripps slows down, and solving their HB challenge would be their top 2 priority I’d say with bringing some pace in the midfield/wing. We’ve got injuries as one of the reasons for our underperformance this year, they do too.

Let’s just say if we’re not getting Houston I would rather see him anywhere else than Carlton.

Houston would be another N Daicos in the backline. It was what was missing off half back for most of our year. Petracca would be like another slightly more consistent and prolific DeGoey. Don't get me wrong I would like both but if I had to pick one it would be Houston and that is before we take into account the 18 months age difference and the extra draft picks needed to get Petracca. The Norm Smith is a bad argument. It make Petracca automatically better than Daicos, Cripps, Ablett Jr etc. Use the AA advantage if you have to.

To me, the draft is like a lucky dip, no guarantee of what you get. You may get a diamond, but there are also a lot of rocks to be picked as well. Using your picks to bring in a proven entity you know exactly what you are getting. When you are doing this to fill a team need, like quick ball movement off half back, in the unlikely event we can trade picks for Houston, I think this is a sound strategy and improves our list for the now, whilst we can still contend.

When it's hine picking you only get rocks

Sure. If he was happy to go although he is coming off an AC and will miss most of the year. I agree that Port would likely target our SA talent: McCreery, Harrison and Ryan to name 3. They have already targeted Richards as well.

Even if they are similar standard. I'd prefer Tomlinson, because I like Moore deep and central and that's where Billy plays because he gets completely lost and can't play anywhere else.
Their not similar. Tomo is a much better player who can actually rebound and read the play much better.
