Young would be a handy addition, however he’s contracted until the end of 2026. The trade price could be prohibitive.

Carlton, annoyingly, seems to have built quite a balanced list. They don’t have too many areas on the field where they don’t have quality or capable back-ups.
Thankfully they have a crapenhausen coach that lives off individual talent without a recognisable game plan

I think the following list changes with approximate salaries shall be freed up come October 31st this year:

1. Scott Pendlebury: retire with ($650,000)
2. Steele Sidebottom: retire with ($600,000)
3. Nathan Murphy: likely enforced concussion retirement ($550,000)
4. WHE: pushed into retirement ($475,000)
5. Nathan Kreuger: delisted ($300,000)
6. A Johnson: to be traded ($350,000)
7. A Begg: likely delisting $150,000

Total Cap Relief: $3,000,000 approx

A combo of either Carmichael, Bytel, Eyre, Markov or Sullivan whose contracts expire this year may be let go depending on form. We all know some of the above savings shall be parlayed into other existing player contract spikes for 2025 and above. But with little premium draft capital (a future 2025 first rounder only) available, the club needs to pull all remaining recruiting levers to bring in talent.

Free Agents of Appeal:

Hugh McCluggage: worth asking the question
W. Hayward: gun player
Ollie Florent: top player
Harry Perryman: underrated
Tim English: won't happen given Grundy contract fracas and Ruckmen rating
Liam Duggan: has upside
Ben Ainsworth: bit similar to what we have but FREE Agent
Isaac Cumming: underrated
Cam Zurhaar: effective but plays like McCreery
Tom Hawkins: why not? :)
Tyson Stengle: AA in first year at Cats
Connor Nash: popular option in this thread
Jack Graham: great to get one back on the Tigers aka 1983
J. Battle: handy replacement for Nathan Murphy if that arises

Out of Contract Targets:

Bailey Smith: Great replacement for Steele
Max Holmes: Likewise
Logan McDonald: would cost a motza but can always dream
Alex Davies: Big bodied Gold Coast prodigy getting squeezed out
Ned Moyle: Next big thing in the Ruck for life post Cox and D Cameron support
Denver Grainger Barass: Former top 10 pick on the nose at Hawks
Will Phillips: Former pick 3 getting squeezed out of selection
Dougal Howard: Has ability but on the nose at Saints
Rhylee West: being played out of position and has midfield upside

Controversial Bargains:

Tarryn Thomas: I can hear the objections as I type
Taylor Walker: Free Agent and for 20-35 games may keep us in the hunt

Welcome your thoughts on the above but do feel we have to maximise our current "Kerb appeal" as a destination club and land some genuine talent.

Johnson has zero trade value. He’s not even VFL standard. Our best option is to pay him off and get him off our books. He looks as though he’s hating his job.
Let the kid go.

Who knows if he is a crap coach as sounds as though he is talking through a mouthful of marbles
I’d say effective communication is a moderately significant part of coaching

WHE is getting paid 475k? When did that happen?

If the war chest is cannily invested, it could help us stay in contention.

While the retirement of our ageing stars - add Howe to the list? - could herald disaster, the fact that we have quite a few who are well remunerated could (counterintuitively?) benefit us. Meaning we will have enough money to replace them with quality.

Yes that’s a positive spin to put on it. But otherwise it looks like we’re about to go over a cliff.☹️

I think the argument many have raised vic is Howe, pendles and sidey aren’t in the prime. They are valuable but we aren’t losing them at their best per se. Although the GF they were excellent.

Can’t buy the experience they bring though.

(1) If you have Pendles, Sidebottom and WHE retire at the same time, we’re no longer in the hunt.

(2) Ordinarily I’d have thought Howe would retire before Pendlebury will, but Pendlebury has been very strange this year. His game has been OKish but certainly not great. But his playing for free kicks and tummy taps have just been bizarre.

Good chance that the above will be pushed out end this year, if we get no value out of their seasons ( Surely we don't renew WHE).
Question mark over Howe playing beyond 2024.
I think Pendles & Sidey play on in 2025.

If Pendles was playing his first game on Thursday night we'd be happy with his output and predicting a good future. His age gets in the way of objective analysis.

Don’t forget that there will be some other existing players looking for a pay rise.
And perhaps some with triggers achieved.
I’m not convinced we have as a much cap space ahead as suggested.

Happy with his output? Of course.

Probably not so much his bizarre onfield behaviour.

I doubt we'll have a war chest. We will only have next years first to play with also. FA would be our best bet in 2025.

We need a proven centre square midfielder and beyond that should target first round draft pick players not presently getting much of a chance at AFL level at clubs that have stacked their lists thanks to draft concessions and/or preferential regional academies ie Gold Coast, GWS, Brisbane, Sydney and Kangaroos.

Some of those clubs will soon have big salary cap problems and may need to offload players at below market rates eg Gold Coast sending Bowes to Geelong with pick 7 attached in 2022.

Will also be interesting to see if any senior Lions players want out after the damage done on their Vegas trip.
