Pass mark for each club in 2013

If not a premiership,
Landing another Big fish ala Goddard, and drafting another champion of the future like Hurley, Heppell and Daniher will be very soon, really it is the key to gain big steps up the ladder.

I'd be happy for St Kilda to introduce more fresh faces to the team, watch the continued development of players such as Steven, McEvoy, Armitage, Simpkin, Saad and Sipposs, and remain competitive in all matches.

The side is in transition, the challenge is to handle this transition without bottoming out.

Finals for St Kilda. Would have comfortably played them this year if it weren't for several umpiring displays.

Also important to develop a lot of younger players to come in and carry the team. If they get to play in a final while they're green that's even better.

A finals win is the pass mark for North.
I think most North fans would agree with that.

I guess the OP is saying just making the finals is a win, in the eyes of the average AFL fan, because they believe North only made the 8 this year due to a soft draw (I don't agree, but that's a common view), whereas the 2013 draw will be harder.

Any club that came top 8-10 that isn't aiming for at least top 4 is deluding themselves, and most should be aiming for a flag

Looking at last years top 8...

Hawthorn, Sydney, West Coast, Collingwood and Geelong are all obviously aiming to win the flag.

Rest assured Ross Lyon has that goal for Freo too. They've won a final on the road - no reason why they can't win the flag.

While I don't personally believe the Crows are a contender, any team that loses a GF by a kick is aiming to win the flag the next year

That leaves North who will be aiming to win a final

Outside the 8:

Carlton are aiming for top 4 (Ratten got sacked for not achieving that goal)
Essendon to win a final
Richmond to make the 8

And there are some other sides who are developing their lists

5+ wins.
Try not to finish bottom 4.
Libba, Wallis, Dal, Smith, Jones, Cordy, Howard, Tutt all play 18+ games each, one of these guys jumps into elite player categorie (I think it will be Libba).

You mean the one that turned your bottom of the table rabble into a premiership and numerous grand finals. Geeze how quickly you forget...
No, We still have Eddie, I mean the one who took 10 years with the best facilities and support in the competition and only managed to get over the line with 2 attempts after his use by date was known. You know, the one who when he finally won a flag was handed a dream list with close to the best midfield in the comp and an additional 1st rate ruck and inside midfielder tacked on for good measure. The one who left a one-legged defender on a little known forward who then proceeded to kick enough goals to put any chance of a flag out of reach and who then proceeded to blame his players. Geeze, how quickly you forget.... Seriously, people ought to have a look at the facts before spouting such garbage.

Geelong- finals. With quality depth and the addition of Caddy, Rivers, and McIntosh, we should be looking to remain around the mark and avoid bottoming out. To feature in September again would be a good result.

Hawthorn- premiership. If not, the Hawks have essentially wasted another season at the peak of their powers.

Looks like another poorly veiled attempt to set the bar too high for the team you're obsessed with while trying to take pressure off your own.

Really, your pass mark for Geelong is finals? :D That would be Richmond's maybe, or a team on the rise who wants to go a step better in 2013. Not a team in the midst of their greatest era who just drafted in two 29 year olds and Josh Caddy.

I would prefer you set your own bar, to start an agenda-less thread for the purposes of serious discussion only. I doubt you could clear it.

Ill look at the one fact that matters: Malthouse is/was a better coach than Buckley will ever be.
He made what 4 grand finals in 10 years? You should be thankful for what he did for your footy club, not a sad, sour creature. Im also pretty sure he helped build your "dream list" considering he was there when most of those players were drafted.

Have already said I'm not trolling, and won't repeat myself despite the fact some thick posters are seemingly unable to get a grip in terms of understanding this.

Yes, my pass mark for us is to play finals and win one. As much as I believe we are a flag chance in 2013, we are a difficult side to gauge, and in reality could finish anywhere between 1st-12th. What I'd like just as much as a decent ladder position is the continued improvement of youngsters (Caddy, Menzel, Duncan, Christensen, Stringer, Vardy, amongst others) who will eventually replace our current spine, and for our recruiting coup this off-season to produce positive results.

Whilst we'll certainly be aiming for a flag, a pass mark is another thing. In that case a finals victory will be sufficient enough should our year not go quite to plan.

As for Hawthorn, two wasted golden opportunities in a potentially successful era would constitute a fail in my books. The Hawks could possibly (certainly not saying they will) begin to slide in 2014, and so should accept nothing less than a flag whilst at the peak of their powers. A flag the following season should be the minimum acceptable result for every runner-up.

Easy to understand, it's just obviously not the case.

This is different from your stated pass mark of making the top 8. I'm attacking the crap in your OP, not any lame backpedal you may have been forced into since then.

That's based on the presupposition that either 2012 or 2013 is a golden opportunity. I understand that you're saying it is, but that doesn't make it so.

Ill look at the one fact that matters: Malthouse is/was a better coach than Buckley will ever be.
fact (noun)
1. something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact.
2. something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact.
3. a truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true: Scientists gather facts about plant growth.
4. something said to be true or supposed to have happened: The facts given by the witness are highly questionable.
5. Law . Often, facts. an actual or alleged event or circumstance, as distinguished from its legal effect or consequence.

Opinion (noun)

1. a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty.
2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
3. the formal expression of a professional judgment: to ask for a second medical opinion.
etc.

I think most educated people will pick the difference! Perhaps the sentence would be more accurate if you substituted the word "fact" with "biased opinion"!

Given what I have already described, and few would disagree are some of the best training facilities in the country along with some of the best support staff in the league, one would not be inclined to believe that a 9% success rate in winning flags amounts during his tenure to be much more than moderate success. Some would suggest it's not even a pass mark.

Mick played his part for sure in that moderate success but it's a bit over the top the way the media and some here on BF tout Mick as some kind of supercoach. When one considers the quality of assistant coaches that he had, a significant number of whom are now senior coaches elsewhere and the fact that some have had a far greater success rate, it's difficult not to assume that some credit belongs elsewhere. Surely it's also hard to discount the money Collingwood have spent on sports medicine and conditioning staff as having had some bearing along with the work of a man considered by many to be a list management guru. No, Mick will not be remembered by Collingwood as being anything more than an adequate coach and the way he repaid the club for having waited so long for success will probably be remembered far more vividly.

For the Bulldogs I think anything more than 4 wins would be a real bonus.....we don't have a key forward yet and the defense is shaping up as pretty young and no Lake anymore. Having said that if a couple of the young talls step up this year we might be an awkward opponent for a lot of teams. But as we speak....looking at the list where it's at.....4 wins is par for 2013 with 2014 looking more like the year where we would start expecting some real gains.

So I look forward to the year regardless, always something good to look forward to…..we have some great kids like most teams and this year we have 3 first rounders to watch.

So I will go into the season optimistic and hope that we somehow become a force by round 1. But realistically......lol….I will enjoy the ride.

What is with stkilda supporters on this forum always blaming the umpires. Stop your bloody sooking!! Maybe it was because we weren't good enough?!

Whenever I read a Collingwood revisionist history on Malthouse I reminded of Sheedy's back handed compliment to Malthouse - "He did great it isn't an easy thing to get Collingwod to win a flag" Most people who have followed the game for longer than a decade know that Malthouse made Collingwood relevant on the field - for the first time in 50 years. Not good enough though for the Wobbler 'faithful' - apparently a bunch of masseurs and assistants that Malthuse hired were more responsible - oh and lets not forget Eddie McFatchins - the real genius behind everything Collingwood..

Good luck with Nuthin Buckley - he knows he has one or two years to jag a flag before Collingwood is once again - nowhere. I think Collingwood have as much claim if not more as being flag favourites this year than any other team - Qlynch is >Dawes by a long way - that will help Collingwood play Malthouses game style @ Collingwood better than last year.

Every team bar GWS, GC, Melbourne, Doggies, and Port should expect to play finals or it's a fail. Hawks, Pies, Swans, Eagles, and Freo should be aiming for a Premiership, and you can throw a blanket over the rest in between.

We play finals or we fail.

Do people really think St Kilda are actually a chance of playing finals next year?

They couldn't do it last year, they have lost Goddard and Gram and gained very little which will cover their loss.

With Norths tough draw, it will most likely be the only position up for grabs in the 8. I would think that Essendon, Richmond and Carlton are ahead in the queue to play finals.

Thoughts?
