Didn't see the game but going off the stats and commentary here the future is looking bright:

Forwards - Sturt kicks 4.2 for 6 shots on goal, Delean with 3.1 for 4 shots on goal.

Mids - Erasmus 34 disposals, 7 tackles and 5 shots of goal, Brodie 34 disposals.

Defence - Davies working hard.

Ruck - Reidy and Knobel coming along nicely.

And Stanley and Noddy not even playing.

If goal-kicking continues to be an issue for Freo we must simply invest in the likes of Sturt. Let the other aspects of his game develop, the man kicks goals.

Thoughts on the players:

  • Davies - very very good AFL standard game from him; was resolute in defence and was huge in stopping both Keitel and Scaife from playing their normal games. Also really good on the rebound as well; his best game.
  • Delean - ignoring the goals he kicked (including a goal of the year contender), he ran hard from half forward, got up the ground a lot and made lots of chances for his team mates. Also has become the number one congratulator for other team members. His best game by far at WAFL level so far.
  • Sturt - was pretty much playing as a full forward. Kicked a heap (3?) of his 4 goals in one five- or six-minute purple patch which killed the game. He did some good stuff off the ball but I think he needs to improve that side of his game to get a Gurnsey again. Also (just my opinion) but he looked miserable at times out there; I hope is okay?
  • Erasmus - was everywhere but the important points was that his handballing was pretty good, his kicking a little less good, pressure was pretty good. Played both centre square and then later in the game he was on the wing.
  • Brodie - below standard game for Brodie at this level but was clearly trying to take the game on and had some pings at goal from 50 out. Defensive work was down from his previous game unfortunately, and I still believe that is what is keeping him out of the side / behind Erasmus.
  • Worner - pressing hard for selection. Disposal was excellent, ground work excellent and defensive effort was right up there. Like Davies one of the significant parts of the reason Peel obliterated West Perth.
  • Wagner - see Worner; if we need a back pocket or HBF see these guys.
  • Hughes - IMO probably wasn't as bad as some made out but he made some critical errors both with the ball and getting caught being too slow. He got to some good defensive spots and put up effort.
  • Murphy - not as prominent as the other defenders but promising in terms of his interception and good on the rebound.
  • Reidy - wasn't as dominant as last week but was still giving Peel a heap of the ball and was good around the ground. Almost a Darcy at Peel sort of game.

Great write-up, real worry about your observations re Sturt though - but could be understandable given he's away from home, been on the list for 6 years and played only a handful of games (where he often kicks goals).

Could be he's more than aware of his defensive deficiencies but just can't bridge them. Would he get games in other teams? I reckon he would, and he may be close to giving up. I hope if it doesn't work out here, he can reinvent himself somewhere else.

When they interviewed him during g
Half time Sturt seemed upbeat to me. That's cause of the 3 goals up to then. He kind of drifted out the game after, but also the two gettable goals he missed might of peeved him. Could just be his demeanor

Thanks - I didn't see the interview; honestly I hope you are right.

I thought Sturt was good all day and he also seemed to enjoy his team-mates kicking goals.

Different sort of game for him as there were times he was high half forward.

7 kicks, 12 handballs, 5 marks, a couple of tackles and some really good smothers, keeping the ball in the forward line were critical, to go along with his 4.2.

He was involved in a number of score assists, I'd say probably more than any other player on the ground.

Not much more that he could have done really.

I thought Erasmus was really good too. I've been critical of his disposal but a side from a couple of errors early, I thought his disposal was good, his kicking in particular was an improvement.

Ysaye - I have to disagree with you on Hughes, thought he was awful. Too slow, taking on the tackler and getting caught and his decision making, when all his Peel team-mates were playing quick transition footy, he would stop and prop like he does for Freo. He should be better at this level.

I thought Brodie wasn't overly impressive either. Got a lot of the ball but wasn't as impactful as others, just solid.

Delean has something about him we should be excited about. Wasn't really involved, but there's a lot to work with. I guess if you kick 3.1 as a small forward you have done your job though.

Scott Jones has also been outstanding in the WAFL
I’ve been harsh on Reidy and following that Port practice game he was miles off it but he has made some good strides since and has been playing very well the past three games. I was impressed with his taps to advantage today. Not sure the opposition ruck was much chop to be honest though.

Interestingly East Fremantle ruck Brynn Teakle is in a rich vein of form as well - kicking goals and dominating ruck taps. 17 possessions, 48 hit outs and 3 goals in their victory over Subiaco today. Reidy and Teakle had a good tight tussle in round 1 and I gave the chocolates to Teakle (just) but both have improved in the past month. Will be interesting to see them both go at it again as in my opinion those two are the standout in WAFL ruckmen.

As for Scott Jones - he goes ok in the boundary throw ins as he loves a good hug and wrestle - but doesn’t offer much else. Outstanding is a gross exaggeration.

He was annoyed and very disappointed at his two set shot misses. Also got cross at himself a couple of times when caught behind and tried to shove the defender out of position and lost the 1-on-1. He appeared to realise what he did wasn’t what he should be doing.

I thought it was a real positive game overall for Sturt. He was also free on the lead a few other times but likes of Wilson, Tragenza or Sears was hit up instead. Was pretty decent with his defensive pressure but perhaps he felt he could do a bit more. Trending in the right direction though.

Sturt does his best work full speed on the lead at the ball carrier.

He seems to be getting over his knee issues which I said would prob be about 6-months in from surgery at the start of December.

The good news is he is in a better position to step up to AFL.

Thing I liked about Sturt today was his physicality & second & third efforts. Looked more engaged than I’ve seen him in 18 months, hopefully confident in his body & gets a good run at it.

We won by 100+ points so the nitpicky points:
Sturt lost too many 1v1s for my liking. He’s got to win some of them, felt like he lost or didn’t halve to advantage many 1v1 aerial contests
Hughes must never play ahead of Davies or Worner again
Ras had a couple of really good hand passes but needs to keep working on finding a way to be more damaging, there’s just not enough impact there and his kicks are still too floaty. Still looks like an unstoppable WAFL player to me. AFL midfields are full of absolute guns with generally some kind of point of difference, what’s Erasmus’s at AFL?

On the positive, I have more fun watching Peel than Freo just about. They play like an AFL side, the Peel players are fantastic and there is a lot less stress while getting to watch the younger players develop.

Not a direct Peel discussion but an ex Peel player who got picked up by WCE and delisted.
Isaiah Winder dominated for Souths yesterday 30pos 3 goals. Fast and good user. Season Ave is 26 and 1
Anyone got in intel on him prior to this season.
