Hawthorn have to win this for the sake of their club... it could leave the club in a mental meltdown and a drop down the ladder for years if they fall to Geelong for the 12th straight time with a week's break advantage
Could also be a drop in membership if we can't make it to a GF because of the curse!!!

How Geelong played last night is irrelevant - both teams will start at nil all on Friday night and we have an undeniable mental edge over the Hawks.

What is more tangible though, is that Geelong will possibly be missing two of its best big game players (Chapman & Enright) and has Hawkins well below 100% (even if his second half last night was the most encouraging form from him in weeks). We also have a ruck division with less than 50 games combined.

This is probably the best placed Hawthorn has been to beat us since round 1, 2009 - but the again I thought that in round 1 when we had SJ & Kelly missing and still found a way. Additionally we had SJ & Chapman missing in round 15 and that was as dominant a performance as we've had against them in years albeit it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard.

I'd like to see the Hawks win it in the last 30 seconds of the 4th quarter by an umpiring decision in the goal sqare. Chris Scott's wahh wahh reaction would be gold.

I'd like to see the opposite. The MCG better have a few plasterers on speed dial, because the Hawks' coaches box would need them!

I'm actually loving how freo supporters hoping for a battle royale and thinking they are going to get bruise free football from either Sydney/Carlton

Think the hawks have this one and if we don't then we just weren't good enough

Freo supporters just assume it is a formality that they will play off in the grand final. Sydney are as good as any side when travelling. Last night proved just how out of form Geelong are at the moment, so the Freo win the previous week is not as impressive as what they think.

Hawthorn should win this week in a canter, but anything can happen.

Just for my benefit, give me the list of injuries Geelong currently have.

Simpson/McIntosh, Hawkins and Enright are the painful ones, tempted to add Varcoe who has come back from LTI a complete mug.

They are three of the must not lose structural players for us and even though its not game breaking at this stage of the year Hawks and Freo are going ok on injuries and we didn't have the bad luck to spare to keep with them.

* Have Franklin and Roughead push further up the ground (use them as decoys) leaving our forward 50 with plenty of space to lead into for the small forwards/mid size forwards. Create a mass confusion for the Geelong defense by going in with a small forward set up, rather then four-five key talls

* Put Jack Gunston at full forward and have him leading out of the goal square using his quick pace off the mark

* Isolate Breust, Puopolo and Rioli deep inside 50, as Geelong Achillies heel is their inability to stop the oppositions small forwards

* look for the short passes inside 50 and not kick it to a 1:1 contest that suits Taylor, Lonergan, Mackie and co

That's how we should structure up. Over to you Clarko. ;)
