Pick 1 PSD: David Gourdis

Gourdis and Putt will put loads of pressure on guys like Schulz and Hughes to perform in 08.
We are starting to put together a decent spine for 08,09 and 2010.

GOOOOOODIS!!!

Love to see Weaver say he was the best Tall Forward Prospect in the draft and for us to get him in the PSD is fantastic.

Forward or Back, he should be good, I wouldn't mind us giving him a chance up forward first as we haven't got a cemented spot there yet, but our backline is looking stronger with Thursfield, McGuane, Rance and now the rookied Silvester.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

The big factor is that both Rance and Gourdis are a decent size already, which puts them on track to play plenty of footy in 08.
From the video of both, they have an imposing precence on the field.
We for once havent drafted 190cm 75kg players!!

This has been our best draft for a long time.....Don't be surprised if we have a better year than people think...GO TIGERS

This years draft will have stuff all effect on next years on field performance. Expect a few players to get games, maybe some exciting cameos, but if any of this years draftees dominate a whole game I'll go he.

Richmond goes for Gourdis

RICHMOND has added Subiaco youngster David Gourdis to its senior list after selecting him with the first pick in Tuesday’s NAB AFL Pre-season Draft.
Gourdis, 18, missed out at last month’s NAB AFL Draft and had been training with the Tigers since being overlooked.

Richmond director of football Greg Miller said the tall, athletic forward was on the Tigers’ wish list the moment clubs had completed their shopping at the NAB AFL Draft on November 24.

“Francis Jackson, our recruiting guy, the minute the national draft finished he was on the phone to him [David] saying: ‘Look, we’ve got first choice in the pre-season draft, you’re the best player that’s missed out in the national draft, come over and let’s get to know you’,” Miller said.

“He came over, stayed two weeks and he was excellent … everything he did was spot-on.”

Miller said the two weeks Gourdis spent with the club during pre-season training confirmed the Tigers’ decision for their all-important No.1 choice at Tuesday’s draft.

“Any player that misses the national draft has got some deficiencies as a lot of players in the national draft do, but what we do know about him after two weeks is that he’s got superior athleticism, he’s got superior courage,” Miller said.

“Any deficiency in skill, he’s got the right attitude to work on it.

“They’re the three things we had to examine and we saw them first-hand for two weeks.”

Richmond believes Gourdis will develop into a handy key position player in coming years, as he has superb pace for a player of his size (192cm).

Gourdis said he “couldn’t be happier” after his name was the first called on Tuesday morning, and admitted his emotions were very different to those of a few weeks earlier.

“Obviously that was pretty disappointing [to get overlooked at the NAB AFL Draft] but it’s worked out great,” Gourdis said.

“When I got a call from the club, that sort of confirmed that the dream wasn’t over or anything and I got another chance at it and they were interested, and I hopped on [the plane] the next day.

“It’s made it a lot easier as well, knowing a few of the guys, and not being scared about [starting at the club].”

No offence, but when you see him kick and watch his work ethic you will realise why he slipped.

Interesting that 16 clubs initially didnt think he could cut the mustard.

His motor isnt huge has some have proclaimed and his skills are no better than average.

Athletic, yes, in the Trent Croad mould, will need alot of work.

We would have taken him in the draft but it is smarter to give him a run at the club for 2 weeks at training before making a decision.

BTW it was unusual that he missed out - Richmond had Gourdis as one of their top 5 players bookmarked for Pick 18, so he was always "in the mix".

Again, no offence , but given Richmonds drafting. That means nothing.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. ;)
Burgan . .

36 – CARLTON – DAVID GOURDIS

He has also been linked with the Blues and as they need to replenish their forward stocks since the loss of Lance Whitnall and Josh Kennedy, Gourdis will certainly come into their thinking.
This just proves that Burgan has no idea and his opinion is based on an outsider's uneducated view on AFL lists. Carlton rated Browne and Armfield higher than Gourdis in spite of losing talls such as Kennedy, Flint and Whitnall from our list.

He might make it, but Cleve Hughes was also rated by people on Bigfooty and hasn't done a thing.

How can you label Gourdis the best forward in the draft when Henderson, Grant, Lobbe, Notte, Taylor, S.Simpson and Tarrant weren't overlooked on draft day?

Gourdis ran a 12.8 beep at draft camp according to a Richmond supporter.

He might play third tall since he's the same height as Brad Fisher who isn't big enough or fit enough to play CHF.

Whilst Brad is a fantastic overhead contested mark, he does not display the athleticism of Gourdis. Gourdis plays like a 196+cm player just by the fact he can jump at least 10cm higher than the normal player. He is also light years faster than Fisher. His 20m sprint time is the second fastest in draft camp history and easily the fastest for his height. In fact, it equaled Nathan Krakouers time from last year, and he is no slouch. So Gourdis is already one step in front of his defender before a blink of an eye. So apart from having the same height, they are very different types of players. A KPP does not require a beep test of 15+, and Gourdis is a KPP. Bookmark it (although it may take 3 years to show).

Just because Gourdis was overlooked means nothing, look how far Chris Grant slipped in his draft and how brilliant he was as a player.

You say Cleve Hughes was rated but hasn't done a thing, the guy did kick 3 goals in a match (no big deal but it's something), but he is also a KPP which take longer...

Why can't Richmond supporters just enjoy what is reported by many as a good draft for the tiges without cynical comments by other teams supporters... oh well
