Saints are taking offers on it. Will a swap get done?

GWS would have to be in the box seat, with 4,6 & 7. Also been very keen on Petrecca over the other guys in the top 4, supposedly. I wonder whether Boyd leaving on top of Patton's knee issues will make them re-evaluate that.

If I were the Saints and I could get 4+7 from GWS, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

With Stanley leaving and Riewoldt getting on, using 4 on either McCartin or Wright would be a great outcome, and then taken one of the logjam of players in the pick 5-12 range with pick 7.

Anyone else a realistic option to satisfy the Saints?

I sincerely hope that GWS trade for pick 1 because that means it's likely they'll go for a tall (at least more likely than the Saints), leaving Melbourne to take Petrecca at 2 :)

I would've done it as well

But according to Ralph on twitter the saints knocked back 4 and 7. Maybe they want 4 and 6? Or maybe they are just are seeing if GWS throw in something as steak knives.

1 elite player is better than 2 good solid players, guess it just depends on how much you rate your number 1 guy and who it is. The PR from a pick 1 isn't a bad thing to have from a struggling clubs point of view either.

I would have thought the opposite is true. If the Saints believe that Petracca is the best player available AND he best fits their needs, they wouldn't contemplate trading pick 1. The fact that they seem quite keen to suggests they know they should really be taking a tall, and know they can get that player with another top 5 pick. If they can still get a tall and get more value too - either a good player or another high pick - it makes sense.

GWS, on the other hand, seem dead set into Petracca. If they really want talls, why would they not just hang onto pick 4 (as well as their other 2 top 10 picks, so they can get their next two best players as well)?

I still think both clubs will go Petracca and if GWS trade up they are even more likely to go Petracca than the saints.

Cameron, Patton, Treloar, McCarthy, Stewart. GWS will survive without Boyd.

How many times traditionally is the #1 pick the best player?

Rarely.

They should do it every day of the week.

Just look at last year's draft. Would you take Boyd or Bontempelli and Aish? GWS have a weird fixation one number one draft picks IMO.
Don't see either of those 2 on massive deals traded for pick 6 and an elite player of the comp (at 28)!

But it's true for a lot of years. And should be more true when there isn't a blue chip key forward as part of the offer. It's hard to believe the second best player or second best midfielder can be significantly different to the top midfielder. Jaegar O'Meara would've been an absolute lock for number 1 his year without a doubt and Ollie Wines and even Brad Crouch have matched him step for step in their careers so far.

We've knocked 4 + 7 back, Pelchen said as much on SEN. Would I have taken it, maybe, but the 'front office' have said no. We're being greedy, I like it.

I think the want a big name #1 draft pick that they can get people to rally behind.

I believe GWS offered us 4 and 7 for 1 before the Griffen deal was done. Probably knew that the Griffen deal was going to get done, so thought they'd try to do it with 7 before we knew they'd have 6 to play with as well.

I think it's a good idea to shake the GWS tree and see just what falls out, as they have so many pieces that could get the deal done. Just as long as we don't get greedy. Perhaps someone that is out of contract for them next year could request a trade to us in the next 14 hours, Boyd-style?

Apparently we had at least two offers (from different clubs) of multiple picks inside the top 15 earlier today and knocked each one of them back and told them to come back with moar. One of them was probably Gold Coast with picks 8 and 15.

I wouldn't trade 6 for 21, 22. So whilst if I were the giants and had offered 4 and 7 for 1 I wouldn't re up and do that deal.

Worth asking for if you are the saints though.
then we will have pick then. dont see how we trade it without being 3 picks inside 15

I could see 1, 21 and 22 as an option to try to get 4, 6 and 7, if GWS are that drunk/stupid to be fixated on getting 1. But to be honest, I can't see them parting with all three of their top 10 picks.

Might get 4, 7 and a fringe player.

If 4+7 is the minimum return, there are no bad outcomes for St Kilda in this scenario.

St Kilda trying to get a bit of media buzz hoping to spook a club like gws to trade offers.

2 or 3 clubs enquired... saints came back with ambit claim so clubs dropped it.

All of a sudden - we are fielding offers and their is a bidding frenzy...

Petracca sounds like a ripping lad, and emerging as the front runner for pick 1- but there hasn't been the hype about him as a clear standout as there have been some others. Given that, Pick 1 relative to other early picks holds less currency
