Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

The posters playing down his 5 goal achievement as if it happens all the time.

The posters who would rather cut off their own nose then admit Marshall might be a decent player playing in a shit system.

You keep carrying on like people don't want him to succeed.
When he plays a ripper game not on Billy Frampton, I'll be full of praise.

And there it is

The criticism went from we just want to see him compete to we want him to kick bags on guys that aren’t billy Frampton.

As I’ve said before, you lot will ask him to cure cancer while kicking the tonne before you concede he’s a first 22 player.

Go back a year in this thread and my opinion has always been consistent. He needs to play well against good teams and maintain his intensity. Kicking 5 against Nicks' Crows means absolutely nothing. I'm sorry that you made that game his benchmark but that's on you, not anyone else.

Your post made me go check my posts in this thread.

I posted 24 of the first 290 posts in here - before he made his debut for the Magpies in a trial game in March 2017, and 22 - now 23 posts, since Covid hit March 2020 and that was 54 pages ago.

So approx 1 page of the first 12, 1 page of the last 54 and 2 of the 58 in between.

It needn't be cancer. It could be any range of life threatening ailments. Heart disease, diabetes.

Ah my bad you’re right, he’s done it a whopping 5 times in his career at port. Did it twice in 2016 which I missed

None of that really changes anything. You’re arguing semantics

Dixon has only kicked 5 or more goals 5 times In his career at port still means the same thing.
No I'm correcting your stats. Again.

Trying to call into question the prior efforts of Charlie Dixon with some incorrect, cherry picked stats that do not take into account
  • the shortened games and season in 2020, Charlies best season to date* and
  • the 15 games Charlies missed with a broken leg and the games it took to play himself back into match fitness and
  • the 4 games he has missed this season so far.
in an attempt to make Marshall's 5 goal day out look better than it was is just absurd. Bizarre even.

Nevertheless, 5+ goal hauls aside, Dixon is a consistent performer who has kicked 4+ goals 18 times in 112 games playing on the number one defender and usually being checked by or competing with two defenders. Marshall has done it twice in 58 games usually playing on a 2nd or 3rd tall defender.

Those stats are not fair to Marshall of course for a number of reasons, and I have my criticisms of Dixon. But any cherry picked stats you have about 5+ goal hauls are easily countered.

Marshall kicked 5 against Billy Frampton. It was a very good effort by him and he backed up to a degree the following week. I hope the trend continues and I hope even more that a gameplan is implemented that allows our forwards to play to their strengths.

*Dixon kicked 4.1 against the Swans in 2020 where the game time was reduced by about 25%. He would almost certainly have kicked 5 in that game if it had been a full length game. That would bring it up to 6 5+ hauls vs your original tally of 4. An increase of 50%

that’s not even remotely what I was doing. You ****ing know that’s not what I was doing. You have absolutely no intention of arguing in any kind of rational manner.

Pointing out how many times a star kf has kicked 5 goals for us previously when posters are playing down Marshall’s 5 goal haul isn’t calling into question Dixon’s efforts and it’s completely irrational to suggest so.

It’s showing how rare an achievement it is in our system.

It’s not a cherry picked stat. Marshall kicked 5 goals, it’s a completely relevant piece of information to chase up how many times our star kf has kicked that amount in the same system.

Sorry, I could have put it better. Maybe not cherry picked. But certainly failed to present Dixon's career stats in their proper context, for reasons I have already given ad naseum.

Saying he has not had a 5+ goal haul for 2 years, well you could similarly say Fantasia has only had 1 4 goal haul in the last 12 months or that Charlie Dixon shouldn't have been all australian in 2020 because he only kicked 32 goals.

My point is clear. Charlie would have done it more often if not for injury when at his peak, having his best season when games were shorter by 25% and the season shorter by 5 games, and the fact that he has missed four games this season including the opportunity to play on the spud fall back of the century. To top it off, you couldn't even count the correct number of times he had achieved it. And like it or not, Marshall kicked his five on a makeshift full back that will never play in that position again, if he plays AFL at all.

If you can't see the plainest of points believe me the problem is with you and I'm not going to revisit it to everyone's relief.

I have actually quite liked that Hinkley has put it on Todd/asked him to lead the forward line and be the second ruck. It’s a demand to stand up and I think Todd has busted his guts to do it. It’s probably what Todd needed. It would be nice if Todd had some support in the form of another tall forward but I would keep demanding Todd step up and be the main man until Dixon is back.

Unfortunately Marshall is inadequate as a second ruck.

That would be a failure of strategy and structure. In other words, it would be par for this coaching team.
Exactly!

Is hawkins outnumbered with 2 defenders hanging off of him every week?

Riewoldt?

The crows had 3 key defenders playing that night, and we had only 2 kfs.

They had enough players to be “hanging off of Todd” .. if we let them by bombing it high to a stationary kf.

But he was leading and we were honouring those leads and kicking it into space.

The exact way every other kf gets the bulk of their goals week in week out. The pack marks are just plan d, after a b and c have failed.

Late in that game we reverted to type and blindly long bombed it and immediately reduced the effectiveness of our on fire kf.

Imagine Marshall with two defenders hanging off him every week instead of dining out on Billy Frampton lol.
That would be great. I would take that for sure. If Marshall is drawing two defenders then he is doing his job and another forward should be free. Whether we have the strategy or forward craft to exploit is another question.

The reality is Marshall is being asked to play as the main forward and pinch hit in the ruck. It’s not a role he has played before or is necessarily built for. But he is giving it his all and it’s a good test for him. Demand the leadership, aggression and forward craft of him. Demand he step up. He can’t sneak by with a no goal, under 5 touch game in this role. 5 goals against an average defence is still Todd stepping up and being the key forward and target. He’ll be up and down but Todd looks to be embracing what the club has asked off him in Dixon’s absence.

His 9 touch, 0 score game last week was truly a sight to behold.

He certainly wasn't alone in that, but let's not act like he's had a breakout or anything. There was still a huge amount of intercept marks in our back half. He's nowhere near close to holding that forward line together like Dixon has been forced to.

It is very clear that the Marshall bar is set exceptionally low by his fanbois when a 9 touch zero score game becomes a source of encouragement.

I think you’re missing the point. We don’t have any other options. I would like Hayes in the side but he isn’t a ruck. Finlayson, Mitch and Todd are second/third tall types. Lord isn’t ready and, as a third round pick, is unlikely to make it. Todd is talented but has lacked consistency and mongrel. Asking Todd to be the main man is asking him to step up and be that forward focus. The guy isn’t Dixon in frame, style or experience - never will be. But his effort and endeavour have lifted as he has been forced to play the lead role. He is learning. He will be up and down and he may not reach the standard we want. Not a break out but better than previous and in a different role. He needs to be cut some slack. He is busting a gut.

We can both agree that he's trying his best.

Marshall had to play after his 5 goal outing versus the camries, no one would dispute that. He didn't back it up with a performance to excite anyone though.

I do wonder if Lord was the first round draft pick and Marshall the third round pick 'unlikely to make it' - where would you and Ken's selection pivot.

The club has completely botched it's list management - take out Aliir, Dixon and Lycett and what genuine height and talent do we have?

A bunch of mobile leading talls and a bunch of dumb campaigners telling the mids to close their eyes and believe charlie will catch it.

There is no doubt that Marshall STILL has significant questions hanging over his head at this time the complexities that everyone faces at Alberton, the players supporters and everyone else is made MUCH more difficult without a significant changes at the top. The club has been dragged into the poop and everyone's true place and potential is reduced significantly with the wrong people occupying the portals of power.
This club needs change and asap.

Every forward has been some variation of dog shit so far

Tell me one forward who hasn't been complete and utter shit in one of the four games.

Even sam Mayes had a full half of footy with 0 touches against Melbourne and we kicked to him like he was 210cm.

This thread pre-dates the first four rounds of 2022.
