Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

Being at the game, I watched Todd pretty closely.
  • There were a number of times he didn't lead when he should have. One in the last (I think georgiades had the ball up past centre wing) could have won us the game, but he didn't lead so georgiades kicked short and turned it over.
  • There were more times when he did lead, got separation and was ignored for Robbie 3 on 1. Very frustrating.
  • He's not fit enough to play the role he's playing. The only time I saw him sprint was when we were switching play. I never once saw a repeat lead. He can't be an effective forward when he is forward if he's gassed from rucking and roaming.

I agree that he needs to be more multiple leading and hard running to work over his opponents and get away from them. Some of that is work rate, some fitness, much coaching. It’s what Riewoldt and Tredrea did so elitely. We haven’t had any key forward for a long time who is capable of exhausting their opponents by running them ragged.

exactly, its about working them over and getting them in the end. That can be within quarters or through the whole game. It would be interesting to compare the k's covered by Todd to Riewoldt in a game, Reiwoldt hardly ever took contested marks because he just worked them over. Todd has a huge problem with seperation from his defender in his leads, they are always right on him, that can be solved in a few ways, some of it is burst speed and some of it is finding others way to lose them

Why is he not fit enough??
Why is Hayes and Williams still so unfit after 5 years at the club??

Marshall was the least of our problems today.

Idk why people rush to this thread to bag him out. If you want to whip someone, go to the midfield group or some of our defenders. Todd wasn’t half as putrid as some of those guys.

I don’t get it, maybe Marshall shagged ya misses Waspy idk.

We all want more from him but it’s weird some of you almost enjoy watching him play poorly so you can have a crack

or when plays well, "played on a poor defender..."

Aliir, Byrne-Jones, Dumont, Motlop all hurt us more than Marshall did for the day...

Keen to see what Marshall looks like under a functional system of ball movement. Wouldn't be letting him go unless a new coach has been able to work with him and it's failed.
Did actually see him on a wing late into the 4th, dunno if that was coming on to replace Hayes and just lumped there, assume it was. But if that was Hinkley being bold, well done Ken, there is a sign of life in that box!

If Marshall was lining up to kick a goal after the siren for us to win the GF, I'm genuinely not sure whether Waspy would want him to kick it.

Only took the mark becuase Superman turned it over at half back and Batman was caught out of position trying to help Wonder Woman out double teaming Robbie Gray and Marshal was caught on Color Kid…

Marshall's role should always be a Tom Lynch (ex-Crow) link-man role working outside the forward 50. He isn't and won't be a contested marking forward, and we shouldn't expect it of him. If he's taking marks inside 50 it should be because we opened up enough space for him to move into.

I’d get his face tattooed on my butt if that ever happens and he kicks it. Hold me to that

The problem with Marshall is he wouldn't kick it, waspy or no

Having your face tattooed on your biggest detractor's arse would be a pretty wild incentive though.

I don't know either but I reckon he would be logged in and on this thread with a condemnatory post drafted ready to hit send as Todd started moving in for the kick.
