Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

The contested marking in the 3rd quarter to take control of the game was something we haven't seen at this club since Tredrea. I've obviously been a long term supporter of Marshall but I didn't really expect him to become a dominant contested marker. He was tonight.

When drafted he was protected to be a long term player and impossible said he shouldn't play afl for 3 years on the draft podcast.

5 plus years is when key forwards Start to become good , add hinkley tax and he is becoming a great key forward
The whole both parents passing away within about 18 months would have had a big effect too.

He's always had the talent, it's good that he's showing it more consistently lately

You can pinpoint the moment it all turned around for him - the first quarter of the Showdown. He came out and played with an intensity and a ferocity we've never seen before. We've seen him play the odd decent quarter or game and kick the odd mini bag of goals, but we've never seen him play with that level of intensity before. And it's continued unabated since, culminating in a commanding performance against a weak back line tonight.

I'd love to know what happened between the Hawthorn game and the Showdown. I don't think I've ever seen a more obvious example of the penny dropping in my life.
marshall gave alot of credit to boak
i have been a long time critic of boak
but he is an undeniably huge influence on our young players and great club man

Funny that everyone else is saying it too: I've never thought about Tredrea when watching Marshall play. Couple of things he did tonight really took me back though.
i have said it for a long time.
marshall is the only player capable of holding down chf since tredders.
if you have a half competent chf you are a chance in any game

It's a fair enough point to make, but at the end of the day the mediocre performances persisted well beyond what I would regard as a fair grace period. The most troubling thing for me is he didn't appear to want to play AFL. I don't mean it in the sense of being lazy, but he appeared to lack any hunger for the fight. He would let the team down with poor goalkicking almost like clockwork, tried to give off getable shots only to fluff it, get outmarked at will, and would often offer almost nothing up forward. Despite whatever people say, those were fair criticisms of him. I think even with good set shot kicking last year, his poor year would have flipped to at a minimum average/ acceptable. He had enough games where 0.2 could have been 2.0 to string a proper season together.

The pleasing thing is many of the criticisms appear to have been worked on.
are you talking about mg or dixon or boak?
all are shite shots at goal
whereas marshall is a dead eye dick
apparently you judge everyone by different standards depending on your own biased opinion
i have watched a decade of footy where dixon/ boak couldnt hit the side of a barn under pressure
particularly finals pressure
but A holes like yourself are happy to crucify young players on a whim
and sanctify repeat non performers.
good work
its spuds like you who keep the club down with your intentional bias and stupidity

waspy did you not watch the game tonight mate
no. all they care about is death riding port so hinks can get sacked
what they are too stupid to realize is that a new coach will cull senior players on mass
many senior players at port have zero trade value
a new coach coming in will give the boot to almost everyone over 30
boak, dixon, lycett, gray, jonas et all.
none of them will be part of the next premiership so get rid of them
regardless if anyone wants them at that age or not
but dumbasses expect a new coach to come in and win a premiership with the same tired old players

I think Macca19 saud earlier, the way #HotToddy took control of the game in the third quarter was Tredrea like. It was breathtaking football.

I’d also like to make an unpopular comment that it’s Hinkley that has continued to back him in and play him
ports have forgotten what its like to have a half decent ff and dominant chf.
its like a vision of past glory that is blurred and forgotten
we have a decent young chf and ff
people should give them a chance to develop and shut the f up

It's losers like you that have us being an 'almost team'. Smug pricks who are always right with the benefit of hindsight. We lost alot of close finals with young players that shouldn't have played. We lost a lot of important games with young players who were given too many chances. The fact that Marshall has strung a few games together in a row doesn't erase the fact that you had no idea which Todd Marshall would turn up 2017 - r3 2022. Hopefully that continues but to pretend the criticism was unwarranted is rubbish. Feel free to go back to posting 50 times a year you dickhead.
