Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

It's time unfortunately. Was pretty sickening watch the Hawks players actively target him with hits to the head while he was on the ground.

Yeah saw it quite clearly in the southwest pocket. What a bunch of campaigners.

Yep, saw that too. Weak pricks. The Port players went after them too, they saw it. How he was not paid a free, or to Rioli for the attempted rugby lifting tackle in the ensuing melee, is a mystery to me.

This is starting to move into medical negligence territory. We keep putting him out there and he keeps getting minor head knocks that result in concussions. I'm no expert but it feels plain as day to me that this is exactly the type of thing that will be pointed to in a class action to show that the AFL and clubs didn't take concussion seriously enough.

As I said in the 'changes' thread:

It is unfortunate for Marshall. I like him as a player and he is important to our structure, when fit. Unfortunately, I have doubts he can go on because his injury history is a liability for the club and a risk to his life after football.

If the league was serious about avoiding liability for concussions, they would be enforcing treatment for it as though it was an ACL (as in the expected time to recovery).

I realise this is unrealistic but my view is that the current solution of suspending players for causing head injuries will not achieve the AFL's legal aim. Nothing but ensuring players are not exposed to the risk of repeated head injuries before they have healed will do so.

lol but kenny said some words to a guy who also says alot of words.

From Todd’s perspective you’d think he’d be strongly considering retiring at this point.

But even from the clubs perspective, how much risk do they want by carrying a bloke who gets concussed so easily. Like off field needs to be the primary concern, but the on field element is there too now

Feel for him, hope medically he is fine.

But the backdrop to this is that he is about to commence a massive 5 year contract. It will be fascinating to see where it all ends up... if we are on the hook for even a portion of that contract our salary cap will be a mess, potentially for a long time.

If he's got any sort of interest in coaching I'd absolutely give him a role. As others have said, he's had too much bad shit happen in his life, we need to look after him long term, especially given the concussions and potential associated mental health issues.

Forward or kicking coach?

Sadly should call it a day as long term the risk is just not worth it at this stage of medical understanding in regards to concussions and whether any long term bran rehabilitation is possible. But hope the club, and the AFL can look after him.

We are on the hook for a portion and anything beyond 3 years:

The League wrote to clubs to explain its set of guidelines that will govern the total player payments relief for AFL and AFLW players who have to retire before the end of their contract due to a recommendation from the AFL concussion panel.

For AFL players affected, the guidelines have two key features – the ability to gradually pay the negotiated financial settlement with the player over the period of the contract and also maximum thresholds of salary cap relief within three years following the retirement.

In the year immediately following the retirement, the max threshold will be 90 per cent, the second year the max threshold will be 75 per cent and in the third year the max threshold will be 50 per cent.

Yep. It was disgusting. Hawks players and supporters were both sickingly arrogant, just like their coach and media apologists. Beating them last night was one of the most rewarding wins ever*. My new most hated team.

*even if it meant Ken lives to fight another day/year.

Needs to retire immediately, pathetic from the club to gamble on his health like that.

Yes, Todd's well being should come first and down the track the PAFC could be on the wrong end of a law suit. These days there are plenty of ambulance chasing lawyers all over cases like this.

I can recall Todd being concussed on at least four occasions in the past two seasons. That is too many and the really worrying thing is Todd seems to be concussed by incidental contact and he struggles to see out a full game.

It has reached the point where there is no option.

We took a risk offering that under his injury cloud. He definitely should retire, it’s not his fault at all, but it was obvious he was conscious about his head during the game

Todd is too good to give up on just yet and resting from any contact over the pre-season may, I hope, be enough to settle down his vulnerability. Having said, that any decision should be made with advice from a variety of opinions from the best brain specialists in the world that specialise in sport related brain injuries. He probably still has inflammation from his most recent previous concussion, reduce the inflammation and he might recover normal function but he needs many months at least to ascertain his recovery from this point. When all is said and done, his long term health is the number one priority. Will Puscovski may be one to watch to see what resting can do for recovery, but so far that seems discouraging. In addition there are natural substances that can help reduce inflammation such as N-acetyl cysteine (precursor to glutathione, the body's main anti-inflammatory compound) being researched for their efficacy.

Was there a specific incident? I didn't see anything at the ground. Just watching the replay now, beginning of the 2nd.
Yeah MG marking attempt. Knee hit back of Todds neck. He stumbled a bit. Commentary said he passed the concussion test. Obviously not. A mobile Todd at the MCG would be useful. Not sure they will pick him now even if we make it that far. At least Dixon wont be caught out as much at the SCG.
