Player Watch Pick #18 (2016) - Sam Powell-Pepper

On the news tonight SPP said he likes to visit his family in WA, but every tme he's here he can't wait to get back to SA.

No surprise. I've been told (true or not) that he had some pretty dodgy loser "mates" back home jealous enough to be a threat to his career.

His child has changed everything in the best way possible. Kudos to Sam and his true friends.

Powell-Pepper really represents a high-water mark in Port's support and development of a player where skill is not the issue but life just seems to offer a zillion ways to derail a career. For a while the world must have looked like this to him. My favourite Port player for a few years now.

Great post.

He’s such a reliable and mature performer now, on and off-field. A leader in his own way. I trust him near the footy as much as anyone. I can’t remember a Port player in Hinkley’s time playing the high HF role as well.

There’s a lot of talk from coaches about the need for players to have many strings to their bow or more than one position they can play. I’m more in favour of having players who play one role exceptionally well. Duursma and Bergman on the wings and SPP at HF are three examples that come straight to mind. They don’t need to play centre square or HB also. Let them do their designated jobs to perfection and we’ll be ok.

He's a leader alright, I watch the efforts he makes to praise and motivate the players around him. I pick up how when things get tough he actually seems, many times, to be able to lift. I hope one day he actually becomes leader more formally e.g. leadership group, vice-captain or similar. But I do know that's not for everybody.

A lot of credit should go to Boak here. He is also close friends with the Finlaysons, so being close to that situation makes you see life in a very different way especially when you have a young family also.

When we play North he should give a flying headbutt to Alistair Clarkson. Having a kid has been the best thing that could have happened to him.

Sam is one of those rare players that everyone admires, no matter which club they support. I hope he knows that.
He plays hard so he has what people like, but doesn't hurt anyone therefore he's nobody's villain.
The 1st time I saw Sam play was the 2017 pre-season game v Hawthorn at South Adelaide's home ground (now Hickinbotham Oval). I thought wow, this kid is tough but that aggressive hard-bodied play is going to see him cop a few suspensions. Peter Burgoyne came to mind. However I think I'm safe to say he hasn't lost a game at the tribunal.

I think that's right. The thing is that it looks to me that Sam is picking up Trav's mantle a bit and making it his own. Hopefully, he will be a good mentor to juniors, just as Boak has been to SPP and others.

When he had hair and that trade mark brush over 20 times a game :)

Maybe a bit of a weird comment considering how good he is at HF now but I’d still like him to be our first centre square mid in the rainy months. I remember that every time we had a wet weather game this bloke just rose like cream to the top with his ability to keep the ball infront of him and release it. I think he still absolutely has a spot there in games like that and I hope he gets given the opportunity.

Gee I hope we can retain Boak in some capacity when his AFL playing career comes to an end,

I agree. Was great to see him in the guts for a few centre bounces, from memory he had a couple of clearances as well. Hopefully that continues throughout the year.
