Toast Pick 38 - Welcome to Hawthorn, Dayle Garlett

Well done Dayle Garlett. PLenty of people commenting on the history of a 17 or 18 yo kid. Just a baby at that age and plenty of people mess up a that stage of life. Good to see how he takes this chance we could have an absolute star on our hands. Remember Cyril was a "risky" pick too as most clubs before us thought he was uninterested in footy. Prove everyone wrong Dayle and make the most of your opportunity.

Its pretty simple Dayle.......You have talent to burn, but that won't be enough to get you consistent games at Hawthorn.
What will ? 2 way running and getting your endurance to an optimum level.

Hope it's worth the risk and it's a happy ever after for all concerned. But this smells a little like Rhan Hooper again to me.

this is the concern most of us have, he wont be the next cyril, cyril is a good hard working bloke who has a level head and never got in trouble, compared to a young yahoo.......hope he works hard and does what bradley hill has done and moved away from bad influences to impress his new club

19 yrs old and has played 2 yrs in the WAFL, insanely talented and a draft bargain (anyone remember that loose cannon Jack Darling?).

Could think of no better environment - our leadership group will do wonders with this bloke - with Burgoyne, Hodge, Mitchell, Roughy and the gang, he's in good hands.

Worth remembering that it wasn't too long ago that our Norm Smith medallist was locked up for being a drunken dickhead at the Polo and our superstar full forward lost his license for speeding 40kms over the limit. If the experienced stars on million dollar contracts get a few chances, lets give this young fella some time to adjust to the elite standards expected of professional footballers.

Lets not put too much pressure on this kid, we picked Grimley at 39 and he's played 3 games in 4 seasons. Enjoy watching Dayle at Box Hill next year, anything else would be a great bonus.

Don't get too caught up in the past. He had a fantastic year in the WAFL and none of the controversy of the year before. It's like getting a very high draft pick if he plays to his potential...

Important thing to note here, is it is not his talent that is a risk, it is his attitude.

As others have pointed out he has performed at a higher level than the TAC and junior footy, against adults.

So really if he can keep himself out of trouble he should be an awesome addition to Hawthorn.

Demetriou must be spewing.

Going from one great club to another - seen him play WAFL for the last two years - glad that the hawks have seen fit to give him a chance - he'll add plenty to the forward line and up field if given a run in the midfield. Good luck Daisy!
He needs to change his nickname

We are the Premiers. We have one of the best recruiting team, the best coaching group, a super-talented group of team leaders, and the club with continuous growth & improvement. If anyone will get the best out of this kid, Hawthorn Football Club will! Welcome Dayle, embrace Hawthorn and Hawthorn will embrace you.

Graham Wright said after the draft the club had come to know Garlett quite well as they had been in regular contact with the lad. Reading between the lines - 'We'll agree to draft you but here are the conditions.'

I do wonder whether Hawthorn used a smokescreen pre-draft by announcing they had gone cold on the lad amid rumours he had stiffed them on a scheduled interview in September. The question is - did we pull the trigger too quickly? Could we have got him with our 3rd pick and gotten someone else at 38? Twitchy trigger finger Clarko, very twitchy. :D

Either way, I'm actually very happy we ended up with Sicily as well so it all worked out. :thumbsu:
