Player Watch Pick #51 (2017) - Kane Farrell

I was most surprised about how clean he was marking the footy down back. Looked a natural in the back line. My biggest issue with him has been that he sometimes has games where he completely disappears and just for whatever reason can't get involved in the game. As a back flanker he should theoretically be involved a lot more as the game will be coming to him rather than having to instigate and demand the footy in attack. His elite kick is a huge weapon and should be used as such to change angles and attack quickly after the defence generates turnovers.

It has taken a while but he finally looks to have a spot where you can see him playing every game for multiple seasons to come.

Kane did well at HBF (prob one of the reasons there was rumours of Bonner out)

Did quite well actually.. made me eat my words a bit...
He did well in the 10 goal wins against bottom 4 quality clubs but did poorly in the games that mattered against decent opposition. I hope we don't get sucked in by that form (but I'm sure we will).

The only games Farrell performed well at half back were games in which Jed McEntee averaged 2 goals a game. Sums it up.

Think about it. If Kane was not at CHB and playing well, and McEntee not play well, we would not have won by 10 goals. When Kane did not play well, we lost. Need some consistency from Kane.

I tend to agree with this. When we played Collingwood, he played at half back and looked very slick, racking up disposals and kicking long bullets to ****ing nowhere. Didn't hit a bloody target all day.

To be fair, Kane had a knee reco after round 16 in the 2021 season and returned to league football in round 6 2022.

This past season was more about getting confidence back in his leg, building consistency in a set position, which Kane worked on over the course of the season.

He's still quite young, turns 24 next year and could develop into the role Amon played off wing/half back.

When he returned to sanfl footy this year, he looked a class above it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Farrell, I just don't like him as a half back. He's an obvious choice to play wing for us this year IMO.

They seemed to be doing something funky with Amon, in that he was rotating between wing and half back, but found himself getting into the corridor often to set up play. If they can do that with Farrell, he could be a weapon.

His issue has been that he drops out of games as a half forward, so that sort of role would work for him as there would be a structured plan for it.

The wildcard here is Jase Burgoyne who can genuinely defend but naturally makes good position rebounding from defence.

I thought Kane looked like a natural half back, and would love him to continue in that role for 2023.

Didn’t look to be beat 1 on 1, while winning more than his fair share of contests.

Feeding him the ball 25 times a game off the back flank will benefit the team greatly!

I've been searching for a place to have a type about Kane Farrell.

We are waxing lyrical about the form of Dan Houston and he has been awesome.

But Kane Farrell has been building quite strongly lately and his kicking may be the best on the team.
He's got a sweet boot.

He opened up the Geelong team in the 3rd quarter with some precise, weighted kicking.

He also gets to run off half back when Houston is not in the mood and kick deep into our forward line.

Also, his defensive work is getting better. I wonder if he is eyeing off hitting the gym in the off season to get a bit more stronger.

I just wanted to put it out there as I feel Kane deserves a bit of attention.

Agree completely. His third quarter was as impactful as anyone. Building very nicely!
