Player Watch Pick #7 (2012) - Ollie Wines

Still bugs me he didn't win the rising star. His first year was bloody impressive for a lad his age. Real good get for the club on field and off.
The Jaeger Bomb was too good that year. The most shocking thing for me was Cameron Ling - 0 votes for Wines. .... Dropkick!!!
And Riccuito of course giving Plod Crouch 5 votes

So the mystery of Ollie at the airport yesterday.
Cathay Pacific announced as our official International Airline Partner for next year plus Ollie to spend more time up forward (kicking goals to support Dix) rather than resting on the bench during his recovery stints. I saw at their first training at Grange Ollie training in front of goals with Hentschel and thought hmmm. He also wants to be a Commercial pilot post footy.

Wines reveals his plan of attack for 2017
LAST season it was more outside run, next season it will be more goals. Port Adelaide contested ball king Ollie Wines has revealed....

Peter Rohde told me Ollie was very bright and was thinking of doing an engineering or architecture degree before he got to Port, he had the marks to get into most uni courses in these disciplines around Oz, but he decided to defer his first year at AFL level. In 2015 he enrolled in a commerce degree at Adelaide Uni.

If he gets a private pilots licence, which looks like he will soon enough, then whilst he spends the next decade at Port, he cranks up enough hours to qualify for a commercial pilot's licence, then it could well be Captain Wines at the control of a commercial plane/jet in the 2030's. Eddie Dingle did Leigh Colbert get his commercial licence before he retired as an AFL player, or was it after retirement? I know he was working as a flight instructor at Moorabin airport a few years ago.

PORT Adelaide raging bull Ollie Wines is soaring — on and off the field. One of the best young players in the game, the powerful midfielder has revealed his passion for flying and desire to be a commercial pilot when his football career is over.

The 22-year-old is following in his uncle’s footsteps and on most Saturdays in summer is taking to the sky in pursuit of a pilot’s licence. “I’ve long had a keen interest in aviation, which probably stems from my uncle (Lachie Butler), who has worked for Qantas for more than 30 years,’’ said Victorian Wines. “I’ve always been interested in planes and flying and when an opportunity came up to start doing my pilot’s licence here I jumped at it. “I started in July, try to get a lesson each week, usually on a Saturday, and I’m slowly getting hours under my belt and am not too far from being able to go solo, which is exciting.’’ Wines, whose veteran teammate Angus Monfries is also studying to be a pilot, is learning his trade in a two-seater light aircraft at the Adelaide Soaring Club at Gawler Aerodrome. He takes to the skies for two hours most weekends under the watchful eye of an instructor. “I’ve got all the controls in front of me and am at the stage now where I’m pretty much in control of taking off, flying around and then landing,’’ Wines said.....

OLLIE Wines has taken another step towards fulfilling his destiny of captaining Port Adelaide. The 22-year-old natural leader of men has been appointed vice-captain for the first time after being in the club’s player leadership group in the past two seasons. He will next year be incumbent captain Travis Boak’s right-hand man and looms as his successor when Boak decides to hand over the reins.
....
Boak praised Wines for his promotion and backed him to be Port’s next skipper. “I’m honoured to captain Port Adelaide again but there will be a time when I feel that it’s time to hand it over and Ollie stepping up like he has in the past couple of years and now vice-captain of the club at 22 it’s certainly a good achievement and he’s someone that will look to take over my role, whenever that is,” Boak said
...
“We spoke about Ollie when he first came to the club (in 2012) about what a great person he is and he’s just grown every year as a person, a player and a leader. “It’s special to have someone like him next to me and he’s got a very bright future ahead of him. “Hopefully he can take over from me one day and lead the club forward.” Strong midfielder Wines described his elevation to the vice-captaincy role as “pretty surreal”. “Four years ago I came across from Victoria not knowing anything about the club and fortunately I’ve fallen in love with it,” he said. “Now to be sitting side-by-side someone I respect more than anyone else is overwhelming and I’m really honoured to have the responsibility of the vice-captain’s role. “If the captaincy happens down the track I would be more than happy to have a crack at it but at the moment we’ve got a bit of respect to get back in the competition so I’m taking it one step at a time.”....

Mate I haven't spoken to Colby for a while but he dropped the full time boundary rider gig to concentrate fully on flying. I think he is still getting his hours up in smaller aircraft with a regional airline. I'll get an update for you asap.

PORT Adelaide vice-captain Ollie Wines knew the threat was real – be accountable defensively or find yourself out of the side.

Power coach Ken Hinkley summoned the 22-year-old tough inside midfielder into his office after the side's round 13 loss to Fremantle last year.

"It was the defensive side of my game that was letting me down and costing the team," Wines told AFL.com.au from the Power's Australia Post Community Camp from the Riverland.

"We had a serious conversation and I had to correct a few issues.

"It was probably the first time Kenny's really had that conversation with me.

"It was a little bit overawing at first, but I know Kenny did it for the right reasons and he wants to make myself and the team better.

"Once I realised I was a little bit offensive-orientated, I made the correction and was on the right track."

Sheesh, can only assume that Ollie was summoned after rnd 13 because it took until then for Ken to get through every other player who was letting the team down more.

His play is starting to get some serious recognition now. It may only be Barrett, but for any Vic journo to start talking about Ollie in Brownlow terms is big news.

If
Ollie Wines maintains this form ...

then ... look out Danger, Dusty, Nat and Bont. The Brownlow market will be nice and open.

Ollie is in All Oz form. He is leading the Coaches association votes by 1 but is the only player to have picked up at least 6 votes in all 3 games played

He should be leading the brownlow but you can't trust umpires to see things correctly - ie Cameron no free on Houston, Wingard holding non free etc. They miss the bleeding obvious.

Murphy too. Carlton will lose a lot more than they win this year but Harvey won Brownlows when St Kilda were crap.

Harvey won the Brownlow in 1997 and 1998, when St Kilda finished 2nd and 6th respectively.

Paul Kelly in 1995 is probably a better example, when Sydney finished 12th (out of 16).
