What I'd like to see.

Warner
Katich (c)
Khawaja
Marsh
Hussey
Watson
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris
Lyon

No Clarke. How can the selectors make him captain, when he isn't even of test cricket calibre?

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Khawaja
Clarke
Watson (if he is fit to bowl)
Paine (if fit)
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris (if fit)
Lyon

If some of those guys don't come up, the likes of Christian, Wade, Faulkner etc get a look in. When there are guys who are performing in the Shield, you don't tollerate extended lean patches from your senior players.

Because so many of the players that you have mentioned have scored 3 centuries in their last 5 matches.

Please go and check his last 5 matches before making a git of yourself

Can't wait for Tim Paine to get back from injury - then we can get ride of Haddin. Still have doubts that Khawajah can get the job done at this level. Doubt Marsh will be ready for the first test. Watson as an opener isn't really working either. Hussey is too old, like Ponting needs to retire. Bring in the Cowan.

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke ( C )
Christian
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Hogan
Lyon

Reasons Why

* Cowan has been in terrific form for TAS ( never got a regular game for NSW originally )

* Marsh is highly thought of , but last chance and should play if he gets through the Chairmans 11 match .

* Watson leave him out untill totally fit again ??

* Hogan looks a better bowler then Stark and again I doubt Harris will get through a test match .

I have included a little biase with WA players , but Hogan originally from Newcasle is worth a game untill Cummins comes back . Should be in the squad at least Hogan .

Still slightly tempted to perservere with Hughes instead of Cowan mainly due to the youth factor and the fact Hughes can fire when it all clicks and win or lose tests which is appealing and exciting for test cricket but he has totally lost confidence .

If I were a selector, this would be my team for Boxing Day:

Warner
Khawaja
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Hussey
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Bollinger
Lyon

Khawaja should work as an opener. He hasn't been in great form but he still manages to hang around for ages which is good as an opener.

Marsh slots back into number three.

Watson finally gets to go down the order.

Wade in for Haddin.

Hussey gets until the end of the summer.

Bollinger when fit is pretty much an upgrade of Starc in every way. Still gives the left hand option the selectors love but is actually a good bowler to go with it. Hopefully he's fit.

Those two teams are about it I reckon. Third bowling position difficult but despite being a huge Dougie fan I think the time for going back is past. Time to go forward with confidence and aggression. No Cummins so leave Starc in.

Not sure about the keeper but suspect Wade given no Paine. Mind you they might keep Haddine until Paine is fit. I would not pick Harris or Marsh until they can prove they are fit.
I would also tell Hussey that this is his last series but keep it a secret or let him announce he is leaving

My team for Boxing Day:

David Warner
Shane Watson
Shaun Marsh
Usman Khawaja
Michael Clarke
Mike Hussey / Dan Christian
Matthew Wade (wk)
Peter Siddle
James Pattinson
Ryan Harris
Nathan Lyon

Let's not forget that our apparent saviours Watson, Marsh and Harris all played in the Cape Town debacle. but really apart from Ed Cowan there's not a whole lot out there.

And for those suggesting Mitch Marsh get off it, the bloke comes out hits 20 off 10 balls and gets himself out. don't want him near the test team.

nah lol just jokes

Why does George Bailey get no love?

46 First class games, averaging 40.
2011/12 Sheffield Shield, 8 innings, averaging 55.

The time for generational change is now.
The new selectors have an opportunity to make a statement and they themselves have no baggage to carry at this stage, so can be both bold & ruthless.
Ricky Ponting has had a wonderful career, but the decline is clear for all to see.
Hughes must surely be axed and Haddin & Hussey must be on shaky ground.

Warner
Watson
Marsh (S)
Clarke
Khawaja (deserving of more time IMO. Find out now is he part of the future)
Bailey (debut)
Wade (debut)
Siddle
Harris
Pattison
Lyon

12th Christian

Warner
Khawaja
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Hazelwood/Harris
Lyon

I'd keep Ponting ahead of Hussey, Hussey can't make a run to save himself. Ideally both get dropped but I can't see anyone really knocking down the door at shield level.

If Watson is unfit Cowan probably comes in and the team looks like this

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Khawaja
Clarke
Ponting
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Hazelwood/Harris
Lyon

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Khawaja
Clark
Watson
Wade
Siddle
Harris
Pattinson
Lyon

In: Watson, Marsh, Cowan, Wade, Harris
Out: Ponting, Hussey, Hughes, Haddin, Starc

They aren't going to make 5 changes, and drop 3 of the most experienced players before a series vs India. But they should. 4 are really struggling, and the other (Starc) is down in the pecking order, well below Harris.

Assuming injuries stop Marsh/Harris, then probably Forrest/Christian and Starc are in.

edit: I expect
In: Watson, Wade
Out: Hughes, Haddin

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke ( C )
Christian
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Hogan
Lyon

How can it be Marsh's last chance? He scored a century on debut and has only played two Tests since.

I also not that you've axed Hussey but retained Ponting. Why? Compare their output since the start of 2010 and come back to me.

I don't like the idea of Watson playing as a 'specialist' batsmen.

To me that suggests he isn't 100% fit; I don't think Watson is a good enough batsmen to consider for that - even without considering the fact that he is injury prone.

Marsh is an interesting one.

I think the selectors are rightly concerned about his durability. However, if you drop Ponting and / Hussey then their careers are over.

If you play Marsh at Boxing day in place of Ponting/Hussey and Marsh breaks down again then you are in a pickle. Do you 'recall' Ponting/Hussey or pick a youngster.

I don't like that scenario - I think Marsh needs to prove that he is up to the rigors of test cricket and back to back matchs.

Unfortunately for him, there is no shield cricket to press his claims.

Another issue is the fact that Ponting and Hussey are by far our best fielders.

In contrast, Marsh and Usman are poor fieldsmen.

I think that is a relevant issue to consider.

I don't think it's that complicated.

Assuming Watson and Marsh are fit enough and Ponting isn't axed, Watson comes in for Hughes and Marsh comes in for Khawaja.
