Over-egging it a bit. Watson needs some runs but we're not about to drop him.

Not sure if you've noticed but our batsmen aren't exactly dominating at the moment.

If Watson is fit enough to bat but not to bowl, who would you pick to open instead of him?

I put this year's averages for the batsmen in the Haddin thread.

I don't envy the selectors, they've got a pile of crap to choose from batsmen wise. It's looking like a WI or Pakistan line-up.

I think if Watson plays, but can't bowl, we really need an all-rounder in the team. If the Indians bat for a long time, we don't want Pattinson breaking down because he's bowling too many overs each innings.

Makes selection tough, but personally I think if Watson can't bowl, maybe he doesn't deserve his spot in the side.
You pick Watson over Hughes and Christian replaces Ponting who retires having seen the team home in Hobart

Hoping that Hazlewood gets the call up.

Good call. The selectors love the idea of a left armer, but i think hazlewood has shown more than starc and quality of bowling is more important than variety.

Unfortunately i think Hazlewood will need several more quality shield games before he's back in the picture.

1. Warner
2. Marsh
3. Khawaja
4. Fergusson
5. Clarke
6. Watson
7. Haddin
8. Siddle
9. Pattinson
10. Starc/Harris
11. Lyon

It's time to move on IMO, Hussey and Ponting great servants need to go. Khawaja needs to step up more also. Fergusson needs to have an opportunity. Paine will be close to due soon to IMO

Ferguson, haha.

Haddin should be dropped, that loss i put on his head!

2 dumb shots in the match following his crap in SA.

Play someone who values his wicket.

Time up for Hughes as well.

Would drop Ponting, Hussey and Kahwaja as well if we had replacements.

my team for boxing day.

Cowan
Warner
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
Wade
Harris

What I would like to see:

Warner
Marsh (pending fitness)
Khawaja
Clarke (c)
Wade (wk)

Watson
Warner
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Haddin
Harris
Siddle
Pattinson
Lyon

Ferguson, haha.

Why not? The selectors stuffed around with his form in the first place, but if you look at his ODI and 20/20 games he steps up to another level.

Just making 126 against WA trying to hold off defeat he deserves an opportunity, I am sure he will rise to the challenge of test cricket. And worst can't do any poorer than the blokes in there!

Warner
Cowan
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Christian (with Watson not bowling)
Wade
Siddle
Harris/Hazelwood ..all depends on fitness
Pattinson
Lyon

Pattinson
Siddle (if only Cummins was fit..)
Lyon

Hopefully Marsh is fit to come in at 3.

Disappointed for Hughes.

Now don't get me wrong I was shattered when Lyon's castle got knocked over, but I think today's loss will do us a lot of good in terms of team makeup.

Batting is an absolute disgrace and has been for a long time. Not a single superstar batsman in our Top 6. Ponting obviously once was, Hussey likewise, but they are over the hill. Clarke is a rung below even at the top of his game. It's a concern.

Anyway my team:

Warner
Watson
Marsh
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris
Lyon

Ponting to get the tap on the shoulder. Hussey to be told he needs runs in this test or else. Khawaja stays in because he can occupy the crease (and because there's no one else out there).

Christian? No thanks. Reminds me of Steve Smith in a way. Might make runs at state level but I do not see him as a Top 6 quality international batsman.

Christian's worth a Test though while Watson can't bowl as we'll need the extra bowler. MCG might not be quite as friendly as the Gabba and Hobart.

Khawaja
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Hussey
Wade
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris/Bollinger/Whoever is fit
Lyon

12th Hughes

Hussey is on the last of his credits, but a few failures early in the Indian series might see someone like Christian come into the 3rd or 4th test.
Ponting's time has come (surely), as has Haddin's. Brought himself a few more tests with his innings against South Africa in the second test, but that shot today can't be left unchecked.

In reality, this is what will probably happen...
Warner
Watson
Marsh
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris
Lyon

I honestly don't think the selectors will drop any of Hussey, Ponting and Haddin but if they have the guts to do so and drop at least two, this is what I'd want the side to look like. If they drop all three throw in Peter Forrest. Haven't seen much of him bat, admittedly, but I'd love to see someone picked from left field simply because they've scored domestic runs. 3 centuries and leading run scorer tells the tale.

While I'm a big fan of Ryan Harris, his body just can't seem to handle test cricket and he has an awful habit of breaking down at inconvenient times. Preserve him for the one day game (maybe even 2015, or the T20I World Cup) and keep on blooding young test bowlers.

Khawaja opening instead of Marsh, imo, will help him and the team more than it will Marsh. It forces him to get into action straight away at the start of the innings, rather than having to wait a long time for one of the openers to be dismissed or to have to go in to bat in shock if one of the openers is out early. Hopefully this can get him going.
