With no inside info whatsoever, pretty sure you’re going to be miserable come round 1.

Hopefully not but it's possible.

I don't see why we can't groom Marshall for the role he's certainly got the size and athletic ability, now that rucks can take the ball out of the air without giving away prior that should help him as well ala S.Loewe style

I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see Marshal developed as a Ruck, and thats why I hope he plays the entire year at Sandy. Let him spend the year as the No. 1 ruck in the 2nds.

I think a fit longer will be a good ruck for us, he is just getting to the age where Rucks start to come on. He will always lack around the ground, but I do think when he has been fit he's made a big difference to our clearance, both number and quality.

I don't get the love for Pierce other then he is an alternative to Billy. Yes Billy can be an embarrassment around the ground, but I really don't see Pierce being any more effective.

Wouldn’t mind Marshall reacquainting himself to the full back position given our preseason/week 1 issues back there tbh

I think the direction the rules are going means he’ll never make it as a ruck but that’s crystal balling

I think we’ll be thankful for longer in the ruck this year with it likely to be a little more decisive from the centre bounce at least. Not thankful enough that he should ever log off wow and head over hear as he’ll no doubt be getting flayed for not getting more of it around the ground

One things for sure the club should be looking at prospective rucks in the draft at seasons end, and here is an idea look for someone who has good aerobic capacities and can take a strong over head mark.

Like the guy they just took in the draft , and will probably be 3 or 4 years away , if he's even good enough?
I don't mind us getting another next year, but not with an early pick, its too risky with Rucks, and there's not much correlation between the best rucks and their draft position.
Trouble is we've got a collection of 2nd rate rucks.
Until we can see enough in the new guy that he can actually play, we need to keep Longer and Pierce.
Pity it wasn't us that did the Preuss Trade, he'd be a clear number one ruck.

I see Marshall as a very good ruck/forward prospect.

In the latest article on saints.com.au he says he is hoping to add a bit of size and strength because he will be spending more time in the ruck.

He can spend half his time up forward and the other half in the ruck or some combination like that.

No he cant because the other ruck options cant play anywhere else. Marshall needs to be good enough to be one of our tall forwards or our best ruckman to get a game. That is what happens when the other options can only ruck or sit on the bench. If only we didn't get rid of big ben.

What do you mean?

Acres and Bruce are able to play in other positions.

For what its worth, against Adelaide last year Marshall was sole ruck against Jacobs. Hitouts 18-37 in favour of Jacobs, but Marshall would have been in single digits for games at that time. He is probably not quite tall enough to dominate the taps, but i think he could be very good around the ground

Wells that the delimma. I would go with around the ground ruckman over a guy who just hits it unless they were elite with their tap work, in other words huge numbers to advantage. Richo seems to like the taps. Preferably you have a Grundy or gawn and get both.

Agree with this. If he can win 20-25 hit outs and give us an extra link man in the middle that drifts forward and kicks goals then thats all we need.

Million times better than Longer with 30-35 hitouts and 6 possesions

I don't see why he's not tall enough he's 201cm only 1cm shorter than Longer and 1kg lighter.

This is a bit old school.
No-one wants a ruck to play half a game any more, you want your main ruck to sit out , maybe 15 minutes of a game max.
Also no-one wants their forwards "resting", yes it maybe less intense than the midfield but the best role model of a forward would be Nick Riewoldt, and i didn't see him "resting" much.

So for that 15 minutes when your main ruck is resting, you choose a second.
Now if Marshall was just as good a forward as McCartin ( and he may well be ) then it makes sense to pick him if he can ruck as well.
But if he's crap, ( i recall we tried Hickey as a forward ) then you pick the best forward.

If he can improve his ruck skills and endurance then I’d play him as the ruckman and let him rest forward for five minutes a quarter.

Hard to know if he improves that much but he’s clearly going to spend more time in the ruck so it’s there if he wants it.

Didnt realise that was only the difference. Goldstein is also 201 so myb in time he can be our number 1 ruck and in time again with MKing as the relief ruck. Thatd be a handy combination
King is tall enough but not that keen on the ruck from what I’ve heard - - I guess in 5 years he might change his mind on that
