I thought Bailey Smith got a lot more of the ball than the stats guys gave him
He seemed to be around the ball a lot more than the stat sheet suggests, just couldn't seem to get much of it himself. His positioning at stoppages could use some work, but at least his fitness doesn't seem to be as big of an issue as some might think considering he didn't get the full preseason

I thought we were really good today and I was left impressed. Once again missed opportunities were costly and I think we’re all sick of it. Best we’ve played since Brisbane six weeks ago.

Second quarter was where the game was lost. Absolutely dominated that quarter, and when you dominate it like that you need to show it more on the scoreboard than 1.4 to 1.1

I agree
I thought for sure he had more than 7 handballs though
I’m pretty sure he had that in about 2 minutes at one stage
It might be the way they count them?
Anyhow it what it is?
The WB stats should have it right – I would like see to them

i thought the same as well. I feel like he has impact and i can't wait until he gets solid midfield minutes in time

It’s not usual for the officials not to know the names of our guys
I’m with you Bailey Smith looks good
He reminds me a lot of Brian Royal
If his as good as Brian we’ll be doing well

The good

Richards and Schache making decent returns after their twos spells and Daniel and JJ taking the game on and trying to make things happen

The bad

Stop overpossessing the ******* football. When we have no clear options to kick to then play the percentages FFS

Kick down the line out of defence if needed, force a stoppage on the wing, regroup

When no clear options inside 50 to kick to, just kick it to the hotspot and let Schache or Naughton fly for the footy and contest, just pissfarting around with it at half forward is not giving them a chance to contest...

So much effort, so little reward. Pies barely got out of 2nd due to our pressure, yet that was enough.

Deadset. Learn to kick a ****ing goal from easy set shots. Sick to death of it.

Grundy was still only 20 when he played his 20th game. English is almost 22.
Your implication is that they'll follow a similar career trajectory. Hope you're right but that seems a bit over-optimistic to me. Grundy is one of the best in the comp.

Which year do you reckon English will become one of the best ruckman in the AFL? Will he be able to hold his own in 2020?

As for Bont, that was a bit of a swipe at all those saying we are wasting Bont's best years with no KPPs. However I do say we can't contend in September until English can start to win the ruck duels or at least neutralise them. I just don't know how long that'll be. So in the meantime what is wrong with having a good mobile ruckman late in his career (eg Ryder) playing 1-2 seasons to help get us into the finals? English would still play senior footy of course but wouldn't have to shoulder 90% of the ruck duties as he does now.
There’s nothing wrong with having another ruckman to support Tim, and I would like Trengove to be that this year because of his finish to last year but that’s just our opinions. Compared to Bevo’s, they are neither right nor wrong, just different. And certainly we ain’t contending for finals while we get smashed in the ruck. Having said that, Collingwood weren’t contending even when Grundy started dominating until last year, so yeah.

As for the age difference after 20 games, that’s minimal difference at best. Games played means more than age in a season based on birthday FOR ME (your opinion may differ). I’m not in the prediction game - I’ll leave that up to the so accurate pundits on Fox Footy! I have no idea whether Tim will end up as good as Grundy or another Peter Street! I doubt people could predict Grundy would be this good after his first 20 games with any certainty other than the fact as a Collingwood player he was more likely to be hyped up. I just think it’s unfair to expect 20 game English to compete against 120 game Grundy when 20 game Grundy was pretty much performing at the same level. And Grundy at least had fellow 2019 English tormentor Jarrod Witts to help him out, which yes, Trengove could be doing. Maybe English with his high workload behind him will double his output next year like Grundy did the following year. Or maybe the year after when Grundy did start to excel. Like you I can only hope while probably being more optimistic. Competitive next year may be enough for us.

And I think someone else mentioned Luke Darcy earlier. He was still a second string ruckman in his seventh season in 2000, and that was playing with a Brownlow medalist State representative as his mentor, not Jack Trengove. Don’t think we can wait that long for English to take over. He’ll be playing for Fremantle by then!

Call down people. I thought it was one of our best games for the season. Accuracy cost us a win against one of the best teams in the league. Not many passengers today.

PS - English will be BETTER than Grundy. Give him time.
I doubt that. I think he will be a great forward/ruck like we wanted Tom Boyd to be. Grundy is a ruck beast. I think English can hurt sides playing more forward. If we had’ve had another decent ruck on our list, Timmy could’ve played forward today and we win that match!

I agree.
I agree with your point, hb. I'm just objecting to the term "over-rated" being used about a player who is rated by nobody.
The guy hasn't got a lot of skill but he does have some mongrel. It doesn't show down back but i would love to see his pressure back in the forward line.
I love him, but he can’t football

Can he surf?

Sorry, i thought we were talking R Smith.

Cordy would fall off a surf board.

Sounds like we're pretty much on the same page. I certainly don't expect 20 game English to match it with 120 game Grundy which was why I was impressed that he limited the damage in the first half. And that's why some support from a seasoned ruck would be handy. As you say, that's what Grundy had at a similar stage of his career.

The good news is that he's not going to run into too many like Grundy for the rest of the year. Gawn perhaps.

Mumford will try to snap him in two.

Hit Outs today:
Q1: English 8 Grundy 10
Q2: English 2 Grundy 8
Q3: English 2 Grundy 15
Q4: English 4 Grundy 17
Total English 16 Grundy 50 (HT: 10-18)
Other player hitouts: WB 1 (Schache), Collingwood 6 (Reid)
TEAM TOTALS WB 17 Collingwood 56

Last time they met:
WB 6 Collingwood 60
English 6 Grundy 58

So this was an improvement ... of sorts.

I was full of admiration for English being at least competitive with Grundy up until half time even though Grundy was on top. He was gallant and he was keeping us in it. But in the second half Grundy just went to another level and English fell away, perhaps unable to endure 100 minutes against such a strong physical opponent.

And as he fell away Collingwood started to look the better team for the first time in the match. Lots of credit to our hard working midfield and defence for keeping us in the game despite this ruck annihilation.

I know he'll be a decent player one day but Timmy still has a long way to go to become a ruckman we can count on week in week out. I'm pretty certain he's never yet beaten his opponent on the day in any of his games as a ruckman. How long can we afford to do this?

I'm not sure what the answer is but until it's fixed we cannot seriously challenge in September. How many of Bont's prime years are we prepared to wait while English matures and (hopefully) becomes a good ruckman? If we can get someone like Ryder as a first ruck for 1-2 seasons I reckon we should do it.

Then if English comes good during that time he can simply take over seamlessly. And if he doesn't we are not left totally high and dry - we have time to pick up a journeyman ruck while we draft or trade for something more lasting (maybe Sam Darcy?).
Your post has several comments suggesting you doubt Tim English will make it. That staggers me.

He will make it and if he follows his current trajectory i may end up man loving him more than Scott Wynd.

He is a kid, its like a year 7 guy being beaten up by a year 12 guy. One moves on and the other gets older. Clearly bev thinks he is learning how to ruck playing against the best rucks.

I man crush TE but I have a thing for tall blonde men playing ruck in a bulldogs jumper.

I expect he'll make it, it's just a question of when.
I'm impatient. If he is only a little better next year AND he's our 90% first ruck then we aren't challenging for finals, and we should be.
He'll need to improve massively or get some help. At this stage getting some help seems a safer bet.

I agree he needs help. If we can pick up a 28+ ruck for a coupla years then we should go for it. Maybe roughy is homesick?

Another game from Williams and I’m still yet to see anything that excites me in anyway.
