Gee, its been a bit too quiet here lately - where is everyone!

Tas team v Vic (1dayer, Wed night)

Likely lineup:

Michael Dighton
Tim Paine
Rhett Lockyear
George Bailey(c)
Travis Birt
Luke Butterworth
Jason Krejza
Brendan Drew
Brett Geeves
Xavier Doherty
Gerard Denton

12th man: Ed Cowan (or drop Dighton and have Lockyear open and Cowan at 3)

Tas sit on a 4W-3L record, and a win here would almost guarantee them a grand final spot, while eliminating Victoria from the competition.

Captain courageous has 4 50s from 7 innings this season and is the competitions leading run scorer. Hopefully he can continue this form and press for a position in the Aus side.

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum, so couldn't start a new topic, so I thought this would be the best spot for my post. It's not on the tassie side, but rather on the local cricket in tassie.

If you are a cricket fan living in Tassie and want to support some local cricket get along to the u18 twenty20 state final between the University Lions and Burnie/Yeoman. It starts at 2:00 pm on friday the 29th of Jan at the university oval and entry is free. The winner of this game will go away to sydney in mid February to represent Tasmania in the national u18s twenty20 comp.

Cheers, Unilions

Tough break for Geevesy. He wasn't quite himself so far this season which is dissapointing considering he was around the mark for national selection last year.

Will give him more time to work on his blog.

One positive is that it gives someone else a chance now our Shield season is over pretty much.

Who is that Ken.

Geeves and Hilf, Do we replace with someone aggressive or go with Drew back into the team.

This Newcastle boy Maher has had a game in the futres game in Melbourne... perhaps i'll chuck a sickie early in the office tomorrow and wander down and have a look.

Not sure which path I'd go down Cas. Sounds like Butterworth has pinged a hammy as well so our stocks are limited. For the next Shield Game I think we go (and I know its a lot of changes):

Irvine
Cowan
Doolan/Rogers/Lockyear
Bailey
Marsh
Paine
Doherty
Faulkner
Denton
Maher
MacDonald

Irvine has shown enough to overtake Wells and we are genuinely short for openers. Give hime the last 4 games. Also adds depth to our bowling.

Dependent on Doolan's fitness, which I haven't heard anything about, Lockyear is showing some signs, but I really liked the look of Rogers in that ODD game against QLD (I think). Maybe we should fast-track him and throw him in the deep end at first drop. At least get some experience into our fringe batsman.

I think its time to swap Krejza with Doherty, even for just a game to see if Doherty has his cofidence back with the white ball (looks to have bowled well in the 2nd XI game), plus he is batting a lot better than Krejza at the moment. This might be a kick in the guts for Krejza but at the moment he is a liability in our team and he needs to find form at Grade and 2nd XI level.

Losing Geevesy, Hilf and Butters leaves our attack very thin. MacDonald will need to step up from being a solid support/partnership bowler to our key striker. Denton may be only interested in the shorter forms at the moment, but we need him to just bowl 2 or 3 short 5 over bursts each innings and be a wicket taker as he is the only experience we have (otherwise Drew will get a reprieve). Maher has shown enough to be next cab off the rank, and giving him a game before the end of the season should spur him on to want to be a regular contributor.

As I said, wide spread changes, but I can't see us making the final from this far back with that much experience missing, so we may as well experiment. Anyone know if Hilfy is any chance of taking any further part this summer?

Is Adam Griffith back from injury yet? If he doesn't play this season, one would think that his career/ability to get a contract may be in doubt. Play the guy and give him a chance instead of playing mediocre pace bowlers (Drew, Maher, Day etc.). If we need to play extra pacemen, give the young (tassie) kids a go - Faulkner and J Smith.

And on the makeup of the top-order, bring back Travis Birt for FFS!

The ford ranger is right open now after tas win the other night. The next round of fixtures are basically semi finals and the other game will decide the spoon.

Unless there is rain and a no result (or a tie), the winner of Qld and Vic will host the final against the winner of WA and Tas. The loser of SA and NSW will get the spoon. Damn tight!

Tas are lucky that Qld and Vic play each other and fate is in their own hands.

Any chance that Tassie can grab a home final if they win with a bonus point??
The Vics have beaten you twice so you need two to host them.

It's 1-1 against the Bulls so it comes down to NRR. If you won off the last ball of the 40th, you'd get your NRR up to about where Queensland's is now. They'd need to beat Victoria by at least that NRR (roughly 13 runs or 16 balls) to stay there and host the final. If you win more easily, they need to win more easily.

What do we think about next year? Specifically the first class stuff, as that really has to be the main target after dominating ;) the one day comp over the last few years.

Bowling stocks look ok. Griffith seems to have come back well touchwood, and with Hilf and Geeves that's a solid trio with Denton and Drew as back up for international call ups or injury. Krejza and Doherty fight for the spinners spot and Butterworth and Faulkner probably head to head too for a spot in the side.

Batting is thin. Cowan, Bailey and Paine would be the only three you'd say that were locks as genuine shield standard. Doolan has been ok, really needs to take another step next year as the side is a couple of batsman short. Marsh is another year older, will he play on and will he be still good enough? Will they actually find a spot for Birt? Lockyear will be around the fringes again no doubt. We really need to get at least one reliable batting option from interstate to be able to challenge for the shield I think. Possible targets?

Papers over here have mentioned Denton/Birt back to Vic as possibilities as well. Neither have played a big role in the shield but it would hurt the depth of the squad and also cripple the one day team a bit. I don't know how likely either of them moving actually is or if it's just paper talk.

u know what? as much as i love watching tassie win trophies over recent years, i think i'd prefer to see a true tasmanian team struggle than watch a team full of imports and rejects win.

i say that because SR, you're right - the batting stocks are thin. but i'd much prefer that guys like doolan be given an extended run, rather than be kept out for the likes of birt, cowan or any other import that decides that tassie are shit enough that they'd get a game.

we need a better back up keeper... from going from paine, clingeleffer and dawson to having no decent back up to paine (who i think will be absent more and more) is concerning.

finally, i doubt denton would go back - he wouldn't get a game. and i doubt birt would either in the longer form of the game - he's be no better off than he is for tassie. especially if vic bring him back as the replacement to brad hodge, because he clearly isn't as good as hodge.

I have no problem with imports playing for Tassie, as each state does this, however I think the selectors, where possible should look to cap the number playing in the team at any one time. It's a shame we have seen Matthew Wade move interstate with such success, but even if we had of offered him a permanent game as a batsman, he is in that one specialist role which requires him to also do the keeping. So that was unfortunate, but the way it had to be.

My team for Round 1 next year would be (subject to availability/fitness):

Cowan - the sort of import we need, hard at it cricketer, professional and fills a spot we have great difficulty filling from our local scene
Wells - his 200 in grade cricket matched with his ability show he can make it, we need to persist and find a local opener (maybe give Anderson another go as he is clearly our best performed grade cricketer of the past few years)
Doolan - has shown massive improvement this year, solid at first and then can up the RR when set - perfect attributes of a number 3
Bailey - good to have a home-grown captain and something we should aim for long-term
Middle Order Import - not sure who this is, some names include Forsyth, Blizzard, Carters (VIC), Cooper (SA), Davis (WA), Forrest (NSW), Thornton (ACT)
Paine - enough said, although Jones & Triffitt look to be a handy replacement should higher honours call
Butterworth/Faulkner - whoever is in form out of these 2. I think they can both bowl as well as any of Drew/McDonald/Maher or Day, it's just a shame their batting isn't quite there yet. We need to make sure these 2 stay in the state and in the system.
Geeves - injured at the wrong time as he could have got his nose in the door with McKay and Harris
Doherty - I think he has moved above Krejza, and Krejza may not even be here next year
Griffith - if can get close to recapturing his best form then our pace attack will look lethal
Hilfenhaus - speaks for itself (if on national duties, then play both Butterworth and Faulkner).

Marsh and Denton to retire, Krejza will possibly look for opportunities elsewhere. I'm really not sure about Lockyear (think he may be in the same boat as Warner in NSW).

Look I'm the same. I prefer the local players to get a go, especially ahead of players like Lockyear, Maher etc that are borderline anyway.

Ultimately the goal is to develop Tasmanian players for the national side. Being competitive as a team and winning trophies has a bearing on individual national selection.

Doolan certainly commands a spot in the shield with his ton against NSW regardless. It still leaves two batting spots to fill. Wells for example has had a pretty decent crack and averages 20 at FC level, it doesn't really benefit anyone if he is just picked continually irrespective of results. I hope he gets another chance next season but you can't blindly pick players.

Jones did reasonably I think. He has scored runs in the 2nd XI games but when in the shield he wasn't really given a fair go, coming in behind the bowlers with the bat.

Triffitt was the Aus u-19 keeper and they won the world cup so he must also have some talent to make what was a strong squad.

Im with SR here, I dont think we have any major concerns looking for a back up keeper and certainly dont need to go out of our way to find one when we have 2.

I think Tasmania will be best advised in throwing our energies into not losing a squad mainstay like Birt over the off season rather than going out of our way to bring someone new in this off season. despite his failings I think Rogers may have the making of a good domestic player.

I like that idea. The local talent has to be given some incentive to make the side and certainly I believe that imports have been in there on reputation on occasions.

For some reason, I still remember this game:
http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Scorecards/80/80831.html

In the starting eleven, there were only four locals:
Cox, Di Venuto, Clingeleffer and Geeves.

(There are probably similar examples of other Tassie sides overloaded with non Tasmanian-born players).

That might have been a Tasmanian side in practice, but certainly not in spirit.

In the rumour thread someone put Mash forward. No thanks. 28 year old with 50 FC innings without a FC hundred. That's definitely when you promote local talent ahead of imports.

Blizzard a bit of a t20 specialist who hasn't really gotten a crack at FC level. Maybe. I think there is a bit of upside with him at least.

Edit: Seems SA signed Blizzard, forget that one then.
