I reckon Garlett will get overlooked like last year, no club wants a Fevola or a Dustin Martin on their hands. It isn't about football ability to get drafted anymore, you have to be an upstanding citizen as well.

Gotta be smart about and make your mistakes once inside the system so it can be covered up appropriately.

Adelaide and others, essendon didn't say anything about him but some of the stories from his interviews at the combine paint a pretty sad picture. One club (think it was west coast) asked if he'd been out much in the month leading up the draft and he said point blank no. They then bluffed and said a colleague had sent a couple of photos through from night clubs (which was complete bs) and he slowly opened up about being absolutely s***-faced and up all night with his mates nearly every weekend leading into the combine.

Bet the club that spread that story is the one that takes him!

Yeah and you can bet that with last years transgressions every club will be pulling out little tricks like that, plus getting in touch with contacts as Swan Districts or wherever it was he played. That guy will have no secrets come draft day. If the rumors are true the chances of us getting him are pretty remote, the only scenario I can see it happening is if he rooms with NLM or something.

apparently Clarkson is keen on him, but will defer to their recruiting manager on the decision

No idea why. If those rumours are true the chances of him being a useful footballer for a decent amount of time are tiny and he could just land the club in hot water. Obviously those recruiters have access to far more info than we have and can make more accurate decision than us but if what has trickled down to bigfooty is anything to go by I'm not optimistic.

That said, I don't mind if we select him because I trust our recruiters to do their due diligence and work out what he's really like and what his prospects are. But if what they've found is anything like what been posted on his draft board thread we won't be going near him.

Ok, like most of us on here iv changed my mind about 10 times in 2 days of who I want at the bombers..ATM this is how it stands
1st- Templeton/ Harvey. Who I would love - Boyd
2nd - Cutler/big tassie ruck man (nevarkis?) who I would love - Garlett

Dayle isn't coming to Essendon. :'(

AFL clubs must be an incredibly fragile and insecure environment, not to mention PR conscious if they're so scared some kid is going to come in be such a bad influence and be a cancer to the team in such a large squad.

It's not so much that he could affect the whole team, but he could send another youngster off the rails and if that happens to be someone with a lot of promise it really hurts the club.

But there are other issues as well. Having an attitude problem will probably cut his career much short than that of a guy with less talent but twice the intellect and application. Clubs want a solid contributor for 10 years, not an enigma for 4. And as we saw from the Dustin Martin thing, the press love a good drug abuse ratbag player story and it hurts the club's image when that happens. Image is important because a good image makes you more desirable to sponsor and helps attract members, which translates into money.

Yeah I'd say it's much less because of the first point (which is the easy way for it to be justified) and much more of the last sentence (which clubs obv wont admit)

I guess that means Pears will be re-signed? or do they think someone better will be available in the DFA?

One bloke who is a bit in that Leroy Jetta corner is Tom Ledger (ex - St.Kilda). The bloke was simply too good for VFL football and continually racked up big numbers. Tore us apart in the game I saw at Sandringham this year whilst I remember he showed some real promise in his limited AFL games.

From what I gather from the Saints board, he struggles to run games out at AFL level. A long goal kicking half forward, I'd back us in to translate the 178cm pacy forward into something that resembles an AFL player with high output.

Im a bit surprised that Alwyn didnt retire with NLM to be honest, although maybe he thought he had a couple more years in him, his best year was probably 2012..

He didn't slowly open up, his instagram and facebook profiles were open to the public and they showed him out smoking durries and smashing Double Black's whiling pinging off his guts.
