PORT ADELAIDE

Average age: 23.87 (14th)

Average games played: 68.9 (7th)

Champion Data overall list rating: 12th

Port’s decision to throw everything at the 2018 season — by trading in an array of established players from rival clubs — might come back to haunt the club in 2019. The losses of Jared Polec and Chad Wingard — two of their best contested ball players — to opposition teams has left significant chasms. The Power’s forward line, which is ranked sixth-best, remains potent, but the fact their midfield rating has dropped to 14th is a big cause for concern. Unless there’s a significant united jump in output from the Power’s group of 23-and-under players, it’s hard to see the Power avoiding a ladder slide.

Rise, hold or fall? Fall

Pretty much confirms what most of us are seeing and expecting as a realistic finish this year.

but the fact their midfield rating has dropped to 14th is a big cause for concern.

No surprise though. Our midfield is trash.

Our midfield was the area of the ground where our 'on paper talent' most diverged from how we played. Unsurprisingly Champion data is now more realistically reflecting how good we are, rather than how good we SHOULD be. Hopefully Schofield is given decent reign with the midfielders without Ken taking them all to push back into defense.

Didn't champion data have us ranked as number two this time last year. If so, that and the fact they describe Polec as one of our best contested ball players, has me not panicking about next year just yet.
That's not an article by Champion Data. It's a foxfooty article which mentions the champion data team rankings, that's it.

Im assuming CD is basing their rankings on how they do their regular in season rankings where it takes the most recent 40 games played and ranks based on their scores in those 40 games.

This would artificially inflate the Crows as it will still include much of 2017 in their weighting whilst underselling West Coast.

Put simply, its more or less an arbitrary system with pseudo science behind it to try and offer a non subjective ranking of players based on position and statistics.

We traded in one player - Watts, when it became apparent he was gettable. We picked up Rockliff and Motlop as free agents. Trengove and McKenzie were DFA depth only so had not bearing on our supposed all-in premiership push. And how does recruiting those players come to haunt us this year? They're still here and can all contribute. It's not like they all evaporated on 30 September.

Polec and Wingard leaving hurts, but surely getting Lycett and Burton provides us another couple of important big game players. You could just about guarantee Rozee stepping up next year and quite likely at least one player from each of the last two drafts.

Yes, we might slide, but not because of the rampaging cavalcade of non-sequiturs Fox Footy slapped together. On the other hand, we might improve with a better game plan, a structure that fits that game plan, new coaches and a group of players all in it for each other and the club.

12th is about right

Next year’s success isn’t measured by whether we make the 8 or not. Rather it is about building for a premiership.

Investing in our squad and game plan is the measure of success.

Game time for our youth!

It will be interesting to see if any of the proposed rule changes (quicker kick-ins etc.) that are aimed at speeding the game up will result in the coaches tweaking our game plan.

Even if they do tweak it we're still a bit light on for leg speed in the middle. Gut feel says we're still going to try find a way to play to our "strengths" - lots of stoppages for our dominant ruck (Ryder), the bash brothers + Rocky/Ebert/Boak.

Lucky if we decide to forgo leg speed we can use speed of ball movement up the field with our elite foot skills... :drunk:

Definitely need outside run in the midfieldand wing with Wingard and Polec out . Not sure where it's going to come from , maybe Motlop to play the Wingard mid role , Burton , Mayes in the mix for his wing spot but the Polec role will be interesting the ball carrier around the stoppages , needs skill , run and a tank .
I'd like to see Sammy PP play more of an outside role , although his tackling was great in close he was having to run a big arc to get out of traffic and he became a bit ineffective .
Patmore , Rozee , Farrell might get a go if they put there hand up over summer .
