He is next years draft anyway so could change by then
Aw that makes more sense with what I heard. The bloke must of been referring to him being a bottom Ager. Awesome more time in the middle, that didn’t **** us with Mackenzie last year at all lol

I’ve heard mixed things on his date of birth. He played 16s last year and was listed as 06 but is now listed at 05. If he is this year he won’t make it past pick 40.

The team sheets available at TBO yesterday indicated 2005 birth so this year's draft. Did a lot of good things with his disposal and moves through traffic extremely well

Just absolutely exquisite analysis on ALL 30 PLAYERS from the AFL Academy VS Port game yesterday. I was unfortunately in charge of the #20-#34 group, which gave me little to work with compared to #1-#19

From my lot of notes, Patton the most consistent. Obviously a few guys that didn't end up impressing as much as at state level, but I think McAuliffe and Tholstrup showed signs of why they're so highly rated

I love how Harley Reid analysis has now boiled down to simply "It's HIM". It's somehow perfect to describe his impact on a game. You can dress it up with all the highfalutin words and eloquent salad dressing you want, but at the end of the day, nothing describes his performance better than those two words.

Darcy Wilson is interesting, he reminds me a bit of Rozee with his high-octane composure at the footy. He always seems on the move, but it's all with purpose and he seems to have an impact with each touch he gets. I'd love to see him through the guts for a whole game at Champs, his evasiveness in space is impressive and if he can translate that into a role where he has less room to move I'd seriously start to consider him a top 5 prospect.

Reid got X-Rays after the game and it it confirmed. He does indeed have that dawg in him. I fear I'll begin to avoid doing games where he featured because it's quickly become a copy and past job each week though, wish he'd have 1 bad game just for something different.

You're talking to the president of the Darcy Wilson family club so right lwith you there, he's improved his impact dramatically early on this season, hopefully he features a bit more permanently in the midfield soon to see what he does with a bit more exposure to contact and congestion

In 2 years, we've gone from BFONE to possibly BFODY.

Ports got a couple of glaring needs they need to address.

Mainly key defender and genuine on-baller.

Jonas is washed up, clurey is bog average and at the end and McKenzie at the end.

It definitely sounds like their preference is to go after a tall in their 20’s tho so if we can get someone trade week maybe we don’t go a tall and we wait for k. Marshall pasini and McCallum to develop.

Having said that im interested in what key defenders are showing promise.

O’Sullivan sounds exciting. Genuine chance to make it? Would he be available 2nd round onwards where port may have picks?

Ports afl midfield is stacked full of young talented mids, but as you guys might have noticed in the academy game there’s very little in the reserves in terms of mids. Sinn and hugh Jackson.

We’ve got rome Burgoyne and Louie Montgomery looking promising for 2024 but I’m not sure either are the contested ball winning mids.

Of inside ball winners we’ve got wines and drew on the list so definitely a genuine contested inside mid should be on the cards.

Who do we like for that in this draft / some names to look out for especially guys that might be available 2nd round onwards?

Yeah I'm a big O'Sullivan fan but he's playing himself into top 15 contention early on so might end up bring out of reach for Port. ATM it doesn't particularly look good for genuine KPD options after the 1st round, more so third talls like George Stevens, although it is still early on so there's a chance we'll see some bolt up.

For inside mids looking good for the second round, a guy like Cooper Simpson fits the bill as a hard worker around the ground and first possession winner at stoppage, whilst Will Lorenz and Kane McAuliffe could possibly drop into that range if others overtake them. Will Brown from Sandringham is also one to watch, but as a 194cm ball winner with clean skills and athleticism I expect him to end up in the first round

Pt.Augusta's Kane McAuliffe fits that bill though no certainty to be there 2nd round at this point..

Hopefully we nab him before the Powa.

what are peoples thoughts on COLA for kids that get drafted interstate. Lots of talk on the radio about COLA in general. All the talk is about players that are already in the system, but what about draftees. 65% of the drafted kids are from Vic. When kids move interstate they are disadvantaged as well. Yes I know many move in with a host family for a period of time but within their first 2 years they eventually move out so their living expenses are more than the kids that stay in their home state. I assume the home state boys have a choice whether they stay home and rely on their parents to continue paying for their food, etc or move out. If they move out, its their choice to spend their hard earned. But the interstate draftees have no choice but to spend their pay check. To me it feels like the kids that go interstate should get some advantages in the bank acct. Anyway, was just bored and thought I would ask peoples opinions.

I'm a bit confused with who is available in the open draft and who isn't. So Jake Rogers is in the Suns academy, does that mean he is unavailable in the open draft? Caiden Cleary is in the Swans academy so is he unavailable also? Jed Walter also in the suns academy.

They go in the draft same as everyone else; but another club may bid on them, however the academy club can match the bid and claim the draftee. So, in effect, they have "first dibs". So, yes, Walter & Rogers are likely to end up with Suns (one reason Suns hoarded picks in this year's draft), and Cleary similarly may end up a Swan; if they want them and they are prepared to pay the price to match.

There's reams and reams of news articles and discussions on academies and the bidding process on this site.

I love it as an idea.
Probably needs to be a little different to administered previously.

I reckon the best way would be for a player to apply for it directly, so it couldn't be manipulated by clubs.

We draft Cadman, he gets his standard 2 year deal based on the draft rules and applies for COLA to the AFL. (who factor this into their grants and salary levels). Negotiating in future, he gets the same COLA (whether it be dollar or percentage or whatever) paid by the AFL on top of his contract. If they change clubs, they lose it. it will help to make the draft work how intended.

Love it. I wonder if the AFL have ever considered something like this.

Awesome thanks. Melbourne has 2 picks in the first round at this stage unless we package them so I guess those picks could get bumped down a bit with these academy picks. Although maybe Gold Coast would be happy to trade their potential pick 3 for Melbourne's 2 first rounders (one tied to freo) .

I wonder where Luker Kentfield (S) fits into all this.

I only have him at number 18 rank of the WA 2005's. Some say unfairly.

Yet to me, he has shown glimpses of potential but hasn't put together a truly huge game despite his impressive physical attributes. 3 goals is the most he has kicked in a match and from his 15 colts matches in 2022/23 he has mustered 22 goals.

Nevertheless, today the 194cm forward will make his league debut at 17 years of age.

Don't get me wrong, he is almost certain to get drafted but I'd like to see a second gear in his footy.

The colts could have done with him today by the looks of the Subi v Claremont result.

Subi looking very average unfortunately.

Yeah, they didn't look interested at all. Strange! All of those players were involved last year.
I am honestly bewildered by what is going on with that colts team. I had them playing off in the gf this year based on how they were looking last year with quite a few 17 year olds. Claremont are looking strong though and I still don’t think they have played their best 23 yet.

Yeah, Claremont 2005's have jumped up massively. I didn't see much in Van Rooyen last year. He never fired a shot. But he's gone from 55-60 to top 20..same with Matthews. Sibosado is maturing. Dehavilland has stepped up and the list goes on.

That doesn’t make any sense for Gold Coast.

One of their kids is possibly being bid on in the top 10. Keeping pick 3 means they get to pick a high end kid before their first academy kid gets bid on.

Trading back with Melbourne opens them up to losing one or both picks, depending where the bid comes for their first kid.

Was at TBO for the trial matches today and it was a bit of a treat! Haven't gotten to see a lot of the Country sides live so it was good to see the top enders (most of them) in the flesh at such a high level. Now both games were a little underwhelming with some sloppy decision making and skill execution, but that stuff happens with the additional pressure from rep games. A lot of players have grabbed my attention for the rest of the season, and quite a few bottom agers have well and truly put themselves on the radar for next year.

From game 1, most of the Metro kids I feel like I appropriately rated prior to this game, but I want to give a mention to Ollie Murphy from Sandringham, a 199 cm Key Defender that I think will act as a key bookend for Metro come champs time. He was one that had some really good moments, but Logan Morris also impressed, particularly in the third quarter when he played as a defender, I think that additional versatility will help enhance his draft stocks. apart from that, and this is a theme, it was mostly bottom agers that shined. Kako, Dattoli and Johnson for Metro were exciting every time they touched it, Dattoli in particular has started the year strong but was on something else today. For Country from Game 1, Tom Anastasopoulos and Angus Hastie from the Falcons have risen a bit in my eyes with strong performances, but Wil Dawson from Gippy is the one that'll get the biggest consensus raise in rankings with 3 goals. He's built a bit like Max Knobel from last year but is a lot more athletic and has better skills.

Game 2 was a bit worse for Country than the first one in result but quite a few players pushed their stocks up, with Lachlan Charleson showing off some great attributes for a small forward with his opportunism inside forward 50. Patrick Hughes was strong in the contest and a bit of a defensive headache for the Metro midfielders, I see a bit of Sam Berry in his game with less forward impact, so he's one I'm gonna spend more time on this year to see if there's enough athleticism there or if he's another inside mid bound for state leagues. Archer Day-Wicks had a day out, i was really impressed with him on debut against Tasmania and today he upped the bar again playing mostly in the midfield, just an outrageously smart player. For Metro it was mostly an even contribution, but Nash King, Tom Gross and Luca Grgeo stood up as bottom-agers, with Nate Caddy having quite a good outing after the Academy game. There'll be the classic arguments of whether or not he and Logan Morris are tall enough to play as Key Position Players at the next level, but I think in Caddy's case at least he's got enough of a difference to his play to overcome a couple of centimetres, and Morris could have a similar path to a Darcy Fogarty as a very strong one-on-one leading target.

Pity Lachie Charleson isn't bigger because he's a bloody good mid too but likely if he gets drafted it will be as a small forward, reminds me a bit of Lachie Murphy who has eked out a pretty good AFL career as a small forward that is very handy around the forward stoppages.
