Most of them die from natural causes (58%)—another 37% from suicides and drug overdoses. Deaths from external trauma (usually prison fights) account for the remaining 5%. The number of Aboriginal deaths in ‘police custody’ amount to approximately 6 per year. The fact it takes 3 years to become a nurse but only 6 months to become a police officer alone makes me think our police system does need reform

No wonder we have police who react poorly in situations escalating them instead of de-escalating

Aboriginals are more likely to commit serious crimes. It's not racist to lock prisoners up if their skin is black, just like it's not sexist to lock prisoners up, if they happen to be men.

It’s not a binary choice between gross inequality and Stalinism. We should at all times be looking to improve society. And the question of whether there’s ever been a better time to live really depends on one’s position. I might reasonably argue the ‘90s, post Cold War and pre-terrorism seemed a safer time to be alive. One could certainly argue that Australia and America had a more equitable form of capitalism in the ‘50s and ‘60s than today (though obviously not for Indigenous Australians). It’s far too complex to cheerlead that there’s never been a better time to be alive.
