I think there are 5 very high level footballers in this draft that are just a class above the next rung: Boyd, Aish, Billings, Kelly, Scharenburg. These guys have all the assets and are very rounded footballers and if I was ignoring club needs/preference they would happily be my top 5. I am ignoring McDonald in all of this who is close to being in this bracket.

There is a another raft after them of KK, Lennon, Bontempelli, Sheed, Crouch, Acres, Freeman who all are fairly even & justifiable picks in their own right 6-12.

Scenario 1: I think KK is the one that is jumping the order if GC take him at 5. He is an exciting talent no doubt but I prefer the first 5 I listed. If GC does take him I think this gifts us a first class player, just a matter of which. We would be mad to ignore them. Given Boyd is cemented #1 and Kelly is attractive to GWS,WB & StK the one that may land with us will be Billings/Scharenburg/Aish. If any of those land with us I will be completely content, just need GC to follow through.

The pick 10 then becomes a matter of who is left. If it is Scharenburg we get I would prefer we look at Freeman/Sheed/Acres/Crouch. If Billing/Aish are taken I would prefer we look at Lennon/Bontempelli.

Scenario 2: If the first 5 are all gone & GC surpirses us I think this changes the game a little. I am not sure we would go Kolo. It would bring Bontempelli & Lennon into the mix earlier and we could land our choice of Freeman/Sheed/Acres/Crouch at 10.

For me scenario 1 would be ideal, landing any of Billings/Aish/Scharenburg will make this trade/draft period a massive success. Scenario 2 is still OK but all those players available bring some question marks & risks with them that the first 5 do not.

I think you've summarised it pretty well Didak. This is how I am imagining it too at the moment. It makes it interesting because on my reading we are very keen on Bontempelli but if one of the top 5 slip we have to play that game of roulette if we want to take the slider, gambling on Bonters being there at 10, so you can either 'win it all' if that happens or play conservative by taking Bonters at 6. My gut feeling is that he is close to our top rated player (outside Boyd and maybe 1 or 2 others) so it's an interesting call. I'm sure Derek will have role played all the possibilities. The main factor would seem to be how much Brisbane rate Bonters and how much we know about this.

The thing about the draft every year is that we all read so much analysis to the point that you think you know where everything in the top5 or ten is locking into place but there is always an unexpected twist. Maybe this year will be the 'predictable' draft!

A lot of great points WW and Didak4, however I think it is simpler from the recruiting teams perspective.

Dekka has long stated that with the early picks he just picks the best player available. Obviously our picks will be determined by the picks prior.

It mostly boils down to where the clubs rate each individual.

Its funny how everyone is an expert with 'inside' mail.

Such a wank, what will be, will be.

Anyone think it ironic that North have to use pick 8 on McDonald after the Eagles bid for him but now Eagles don't have a pick in front of that pick 8?

Should father son bidding happen after trade period or would that then affect teams willingness to trade their top pick??

The only person who seems to have any genuine mail on here is Paige who has been wonderfully forthright in passing on info and has really enhanced the discussions. But even with her stuff I think you have to balance it against the fact that most clubs seem to give assurances to a wide range of kids in the hope that some of them will spill through to them.

Otherwise it mostly seems to be smoke filtering out from different clubs doing lots of work on certain individuals being passed on to various reporters, none of which is 100% definite. We are all just analysing what is available to us. Which I find fun.

IIRC Foxtel televise the draft, and the AFL site have the live trade ticker or whatever. Might even have an audio feed, I've forgotten.
SEN usually telecast it.

Nice review. Personally I think Scharenburg will go as high as pick 2 to GWS. Just think he would be a great fit for their list. The big slider for me will be Billings who I think we will take at 6. Given the preferences of the other clubs, Kelly / Aish / KK will be gone by pick 6, and think Billings is best available following this lot.

That means unfortunately Bontempelli (pick 7) will be gone, as will Lennon (pick 9). So for me we will take Freeman at pick 10.

But I'm sure no one at Collingwoood will take any notice of what I think :p

I would be wrapped with Billings, but I think the Saints would be heavily into him as would the Dogs. If our KK prediction is right & a club like GWS/WB goes Scharenburg then one of Aish/Billings lands at 6 and we all high five.

I still think that one of Bontempelli & Lennon will be available at 10.

Yeah, I'm actually worried for my furniture, walls, and home entertainment system if that were to play out.

Tristan Foenander of Crocmedia has us taking Scharenberg at 6 and Bontempelli at 10.

Where do we sign..? This would be a dream draft scenario IMO.

absolutely zero chance if this happening put ur house on it!! if we managed to get both scharenberg and bontempelli I reckon we could get done for draft tampering or sonething. there's no way in hell other rival recruiters would allow both to get to collingwood!

Here's how I see it playing out

1. Boyd

2. Kelly

3. Scharenberg

4. Billings

5. KK - (for me this is the only variable pick. One of KK or Bontempelli)

6. Bontempelli (we should be safe with bont here unless GC take him.) can't see us taking KK at 6 if bont is gone. I'd reckon we will pull trigger on Lennon at 6 only if Bont is gone otherwise bont is a lock at 6 (assuming Scharenberg is gone which he will be.. We won't overlook Scharenberg if he is still there at 6)

7. Aish (if KK is there still they may opt for him which will see Ash fall to us at 10)

8. Luke McDonald

9. Freeman

10. Lennon here if we were able to get Bontompelli at 6 or Aish if still avail.

so in summary we will either end up with Bontempelli and Lennon. In any case we will have one of these boys. Most likely both.

If we somehow land bontempelli and scharenberg they will be the best 2 top 10 picks since buddy and roughy

Hi guys, here is my October Edition of my Phantom Draft. I'll be doing one more a few days out from the draft, and between now and then I have quite a few catch ups with players, player managers a couple of recruiters and a few other reporters.

Instead of taking Bontempelli at 6 and letting Scharenberg go to Brisbane at 7 wouldn't we be better to take Scharenberg at 6 and just get Bontempelli in two years time when he wants to come home? ;)

That way we get the player who can impact more in the next two years and get the one with more upside once Brisbane have done some of his development. We just need to work out who the Paine equivalent in late 2015 will be to trade for him.....

Depending on who you speak to (and it's quite a vast opinion) Scharenberg will be there at 6 and Bontempelli will be there at 10. But, the club rate Nathan Freeman exceptionally high, and perhaps just as high as Tom Boyd .. and Danog can back that up.

Melbourne and Brisbane better keep their hands off Bontempelli, would much rather Freeman at 6 than Salem.
