I'd rather a proper AFL reserves comp & state leagues being exactly what they should be STATE LEAGUES.

I would agree with that.
As a fan of football history and lore (not just AFL/VFL) I would hate to see the WAFL and SANFL go under or the same way as the old VFA which is pretty much all but dead

I really don't like the idea of no more Port Adelaide Magpies at any pro/elite level of Aussie Rules Football league.

A great piece of the soul and fabric of the game would/will be gone if/when it happens.

Port Melbourne is about to celebrate a 150 year anniversary. Williamstown is even older, and the rest of the stand alone clubs have histories dating back a century of more.
How old is the current VFL setup? Because thats how old Port Melbourne is, or so we keep getting told.

And they didn't have history in the VFL when they joined it, so they threw all of their past away. Or so we're told.

Regardless of any of that, these clubs hold licences to compete in the VFL and AFL Vic can't just take those away without cause or reason. I don't know if the stand alone clubs could make a viable competition without AFL support, but if the WAFL & SANFL are planning to continue if/when the AFL Reserve come it, it would be unwise not to have a state league pathway between the NAB League and the AFL
If it came down to a fight, the AFL won't even bother taking away the VFL licences. The AFL clubs will merely leave the VFL entity and join a new AFL Reserves league.

I'd like to see another state do something instead of relying on Victoria all the time.

Then we see supporters of these states that never do anything for themselves have a good ole whinge about how hard done by they are.
I see there is already a few in here that couldn't give a rats about what happens to some of the oldest footy clubs in the country.
I don't want those clubs to go under I want them to be the basis of a strong Victorian state league the rung below AFL reserves.

If the SANFL is such poor quality why have Port not won a flag in it the last 10 years?
The restrictions placed on Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows make it extremely difficult for them to win a Premiership in the SANFL. And with this, Port has made 3 Grand Finals during those 10 years.

Winning finals in itself is truly difficult, the Crows and Port can have the list of eligible players for an SANFL final change from Friday to Sunday on the same weekend, simply because the AFL side lost an sudden death final.

I couldn't care less about the magpie nick they've been the Power reserves for years, we don't even wear magpie logos at that level any more.

You might think you are being smart, but you are not.

The VFL is the old VFA it's the league those clubs have always been in, they didn't "join", they have always been there.

Port on the other hand have choices, they "joined" the AFL and now want to "join" the VFL.

A bit silly if they enforce it on the same weekend but the VFL has restrictions, minimum games etc, to be eligible if the AFL team is knocked out of finals as well.

Previously Geelong were the only team with our own VFL side. Then because we were successful with it Collingwood copied, then everyone jumped on board.

Top up players are just shite regardless now because the talent pool has decreased and there are more teams chasing top ups.

Honestly, what happens to a small handful of clubs that nobody supports is not going to be a deal breaker - nor does their existence in the VFL as it currently is play a major role in the health of Victorian footy.
No, but you cannot run a third tier/state comp with only three clubs. So Vic and Tas be the only states without state leagues - not ideal.

Once again a true AFL reserves comp would allow for a restructuring of a proper victorian state league the rung below.

This is essentially what the SANFL & WAFL will be the moment the AFL clubs vacate.

It doesn't work that way in Vic.

  • There are 10 AFL clubs who need to fill reserves teams with state league players - not two
  • The WAFL and SANFL leagues largely live off cash pulled out of their AFL clubs. The standalone VFL doesn't survive on ir's own without significant handouts. Without the AFL cash, the WAFL and SANFL would be largely dead too.
Once again - people are jumping into a significant and extremely expensive restructure of football in Victoria, by far the biggest football state, just because Port Adelaide and the SANFL don't get on. That's not realistic at all.

There is no need for a standalone AFL Reserves league in Victoria - the status quo works fine and is actually a favourable arrangement for the Victorian clubs compared to flying reserves all around the place

A standalone AFL Reserves league would be a huge leap financially and logistically.

Even if that huge leap were to be made, it doesn't have to include Victoria. It could go ahead without the Victorian clubs and take an almost identical form anyway. The interstate clubs reserves will still be travelling every second week whether it's to Victoria or elsewhere. It makes no difference. It can be an 8-team league, with Tasmania if they want in, and even some other development standalone clubs if they're interested (Southport definitely would be, for one).

I love it. Means we have even more evidence to suggest that Port Adelaide Magpies are completely seperate entities to Port Power AFL and their gizzillion SANFL flags have no relation to said AFL Port.
I mean you can twist things anyway you like, I'm just not sure how you twist the AFL handing entry to the Port Adelaide Football Club located in the same place it's been for a gazillion years.

Or the fact Ports crowds through the 60s-80s bank rolled the league.
Ancient history mate. It’s 2023 ..let the past go and accept the fact your make believe club owned by the AFL has no connection to Port SANFL Magpies and their glorious past success.

Just because you train on the same expanse of grass as Port Adelaide magpies doesn’t mean you should claim all their quadrillion flags.

Stand alone and be proud of your mediocre Power past.

Hey I can make distinctions between SANFL records & AFL, just like an Essendon flag in the days of yore is a state league flag and nothing more.

How will it be a rung below who are going to be your top up player’s and who is going to pay for them, is the AFL going to up your salary cap, if you can’t get decent top up players you wont be a rung above the Sanfl, VFL or Wafl.

They might as well join the EDFL
