Port Chooses Primus

Interesting that the appointment is for 3 years.

2 years seems to be the usual for a first time coach, so there seems to be a lot of confidence in the decision by the board.

Is it misguided or is it genuine - only time will tell.

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

I picked an interesting day not to log on early !

Congrats Matty. Good luck Scott, just as long as it isn't against us.

A few more observations:

Matty had the basic rules of rucking changed on him, in some measure because of him, and just got on with it and adapted successfully instead of whinging about it or denying it or trying to be too clever by half.

He was always cut down by injury, never by a contest or by 'mental demons'.

Has seen his own team mates win a flag but doesn't have one himself, something he shares with Sal, Petters, Surj, Ebo & Davenport of our current playing list.

Bring him some fresh assistants, and someone with tactical input, and let him loose !

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

Paul Roos played and coached under Eade - do you think it was the Eade-Roos era??

Of course it was not. Fuzzy logic here folks.

In his 7 weeks he also showed the gold passes are gone, the game plan is more direct and he won't carry players who do not show the required dedication. Good enough for me.

add into this (the gold passes gone, game plan, carry players etc that he is playing the young players like Broadbent (who Chocco thought wasnt going to make it)

in the 10 or so weeks so far it hs been good and that is also good enough for me

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

I would like a BF poster who was present at the interviews and presentations to give their opinion on the selection of Primus over Scott.

Or even if they have ever met both Primus and Scott, or better still, have been coached or discussed footy with either of them.

The decision is made - let's do what PAFC people should do - support and stop whinging and moaning.

/\ this

good luck matty!

get behind the club! ... not blindly but we cant keep on whinging forever ... give them a chance!

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

i think its in everyones best interest now to get 100% behind Primus and the club....

rightly or wrongly this is a new era for our club and it also seems that externally most people think this is the right decision.

Maybe we are scared of this being Choco Jr, but maybe the reason Primus got the job is because he isnt anything like Choco.

In speaking to a certain player i asked about a comparison between Choco and Primus and he told me there was no comparison. They were totally different. Primus is very strong and if players arent meeting expectations there were serious consequences. The best one i heard was a couple of players being late for a massage that ended up in ice baths at 6am the next morning for punishment.

Its time to forget about the past and time to look forward to the future with Primus (and no Choco)

Who knows... perhaps one of the main reasons we couldnt attract players to Port was because they didnt want to go anywhere near Williams?

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

One thing that will make me feel more comfortable with the selection is the supporting cast. I know Laidley and Kingsley are gone, but Cripps does not fill me full of goodwill. Buddha is probably okay, but would love to see some freshness installed. Seems Bassett has been mentioned. Laird another. Would love to see an approach to someone like Kirk.

Primus appointed coach

Port Adelaide President Brett Duncanson said Primus was the unanimous recommendation of the selection panel. The recommendation was endorsed unanimously yesterday by the Power Board after a final presentation from Primus.

“Matt has outstanding Port Adelaide heritage - but that was not a deciding factor in his appointment. He was the best candidate pure and simple at the end of a very demanding and competitive selection process.”

“People should make absolutely no mistake - Matthew Primus is his own man,” Duncanson said. “He knows the Port Adelaide footy club, but has already shown he is prepared to make hard decisions.

“Matt began doing things his own way as soon as he stepped into the senior role as caretaker coach. Impressively, he did not feel the need to promote himself or those changes publicly.

“This team-first attitude is the hallmark of a great leader. Matt also has the clear respect of the playing group and will create a no excuses, constructive culture. That is what we are striving for.”

Power Chief Executive Mark Haysman thanked all candidates who took part in the selection process.

“The candidates we interviewed - in particular our final short-list of four - were all very capable and highly professional people of great character. In the end though, Matthew Primus was the outstanding candidate.

Haysman said the selection process had involved seven stages and combined use of the AFL’s Coaching Effectiveness Research with the Power’s own specific needs.

“The process was certainly not a simple ‘presentation’ exercise,” Haysman said.

“The process of course assessed coaching and technical prowess, and asked candidates to outline their game plans and list management ideas and philosophies.

“It also involved a series of other assessment exercises as the process unfolded.

“These multiple assessment activities were designed to reflect the various challenges faced in the senior coach role and allow the panel to dig into the candidate’s motivation and capacity to perform the role effectively.

“We were particularly interested in constructive leadership and the ability to motivate and inspire others. Matthew Primus has those attributes in spades.”
Primus appointed coach

Pretty happy with the explanation given.

This is the 'He ain't a Chocobot' statement.

yep ... I'm with you ... lets get behind Port and push our team to success!

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

I can now honestly say I have no faith in our club anymore, once again we took the easy option. I will not be renewing my membership next year and the williams era can now be renamed the williams-primus era instead now because its still not finished.

I too would have prefered Scott, but Primus has been appointed and we have to give him a fair go before we hang him. Sure, don't sign up next year but **** off and don't come back because the last thing this club needs right now is people like you.

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

Mixed emotions. Matty is a great leader of men but I would have preferred to see the club go in a different direction and source a coach from outside the Williams influence completely.

That not to say Chris Scott was the man either...

Personally I wanted Paul Roos.

sorry Ford.

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

I am OK with this appointment.

There had better not be any of this mid-term new contract bullshit though, unless we are looking very ****ing rosey.

Re: Port Adelaide Football Club chooses Matthew Primus to replace Mark Williams as coach

Can I ask why? My subconscious just feel's like it's going to be the same old same old, happy to be proven wrong. I also feel if we string 6 bad games together, everyone will be spewing saying nothings changed.

What do you think Primus will do differently?

What I do like is a Ruckman as coach, we don't see that often.

I think he is a strong individual, Same as Choco, however his Values, Morals and Beliefs will be a different set. Apparently Choco was a "The lads mate" Coach, Hence why players wanted to play for him. I feel Primus will be a bit more old schooled, Pick blokes on Form, not be scared to put Noses out of joint and call a spade a spade. I feel Primus will demand improvement and perfection and settle for nothing less. Primus is very Charismatic and I think that will rub off on the players, a few Primus' attitudes within the side today wouldn't hurt. I think Primus will be the man who demands respect, wether it be in actions and words or results, I feel he will walk, talk, eat and breath Pride and this in turn will filter through the ranks. I think Primus will give youngsters an oppertunity and give them a job, Similar to the Hawthorn sides of the 80's. I think Primus was the best thing to happen to Port as a Captain and now in this time of need Primus will resemble the Light House in the Port River, Big, Bold, Weathered, Rich in tradition, Ozzing confidence.

Matthew Primus to be the Big Bob McClean of the moddern era.

I like that. He didn't just try and come out to everyone and say THESE ARE THE CHANGES I'M MAKING SO I'LL BE A GOOD COACH. He focussed on coaching. He knew he was presenting himself to the board and not to the public and didn't worry about trying to promote that.

Very happy with the explanation.

Wow. Great post.

If you only you could spell and use a modicum of grammar.

At the presser Duncanson made the point that Craig Mitchell, who was on the panel as an external expert and who authored the AFL's research into coaching effectiveness and coach recruitment & assessment processes declared that Primus was the best candidate to come out of the process and his appointment was the right decision.

I think we can be confident that, as Mark Haysman said, it's a bonus that the new coach is a Port boy but that wasn't the deciding factor.

We will only know down the track whether it was the right choice but that would have applied to whoever was chosen.

I wish Primus all the best.

Yeah I was better at Speaking at assemblies and Small Buissness were my stronger attributes at school.
