I'm very impressed with Youngs ability to stand up in a tackle and get his hands free despite the fact that he's still a rake. Once he bulks up he will be very hard to tackle

Our youth looked really promising today.

Even some of our oldies played ok I thought, Kane has been excellent this year. Even Dom was alright today.

Others need to go, Logan offers nothing.

Carlile was beaten today, but thought he was ok overall.

You'd almost suggest if we were going to keep Rodan on the list next year, he should be made the permanent sub. I see nothing wrong with this. If you're worried about match fitness then give him a full blow-out once per month in the SANFL.

It's so apparent how easily the sub rule can be used to a team's advantage if they have the right type of player to come on and impact straight away.
Evidence-based policy in action. Keeping someone on the list for this purpose goes against the received wisdom of list management, but the correct use of the sub is such a work in progress that the received wisdom should probably carry little weight.

Rodan (if used correctly) will on average win you one or two games a year that you would have lost without him; that's more than you can say about almost any other sub-Judd/Ablett player.

I thought yesterdays game was great and a good result for both clubs. That first Qtr goal was a shocking decision which probably cost port in the end, but being so early in the match you never know, but also Port could have really hit there straps if it was awarded a goal... and I'm sure there wont be a mention of it at all in the media.

Good luck for 2013.

Of what I've seen, there's been nothing. Specifically tuned into the douche on Channel 7's morning show and all we got was a fap fest over Jack and his Coleman -fair enough....sort of- and two or three clips of Richmond goals. Thankfully, I watched the game and knew Richmond played Port.

Just wanted to say how impressed I was with Port yesterday. The run and spread your players generated really mucked with our game plan. Redden was colossal on Maric and the general skill level was excellent.
Barring some embarrassing losses this year, I think your side has improved a lot. The new coach will just need to work at getting the side to display more the good than the bad, but this happens with young lists.
There is a bit to work with there.
The 'touched goal' was obviously the worst decision of any game this year. Just horrendous that an umpire can assume for something that important.
In honesty, I think you guys deserved to win the game.
Our inability to keep a two-goal lead late in the game is a concern, especially when we start icing the clock and reverting to a defensive mindset when our game plan revolves entirely around helter-skelter ball movement and attack. It's just puzzling that it's happened so many times. Anyway, your board, not your problem.
Good luck in the off season. I am sure with the right coach we will see Port improve again next year. There's some quality youth to work with. And I have always found out of any club on Big Footy, your posters are the best and are realistic, have a great ability to take the piss out of yourseves and are welcoming to other teams posters (except one team:) ).

Finally got around to seeing the replay late last night. General thoughts on each player (I haven't done this for years, so plz oblige me):

Blee: Didn't really notice him until that shot on goal where he missed everything. He's inexperienced sure, but I fear we've drafted yet another bitsa with a limited ceiling.

Boak: Pretty quiet game yet still got his 20 touches. If he's serious about committing he must pull up a forest of trees in the preseason.

Broadbent: When your only criticism of a guy is that he perhaps bites off more than he can chew in being overly ambitious with his field kicking you don't really have a criticism at all. Has the potential to rock faces and blow minds in 2013.

Carlile: Your classic lumbering, shoulder-shrugging, confidence-devoid, braindead performance. So much for Mal Michael v2.0

Cassisi: Much more like the Cassisi of old who performed so well in 2010, still, if we're to progress we can't have both he and Kane in the midfield.

Cornes: Dream Team gold, Australian Rules repêchage.

Ebert, Bra: Just how good could he possibly become? Excellent game.

Ebert, Bre: 16 disposals and 2 goals monopolising forward-50 entries all day. The fanbois will be cockahoop. Our 'forward structure' is still icing its nuts.

Hartlett: First time in a long time I felt like Hammer was going full tilt and leaving nothing out there. Good to know he still has that change of pace and electric speed up his sleeve.

Jonas: Tries awfully hard and has more value as a negator than Blee.

Logan: ...

McCarthy: If we're serious we'd pay him out.

Pearce: A Rodan game. Looked fantastic in fits and starts, but didn't get enough of it for long enough.

Pfeiffer: So hard to evaluate. Sometimes he looks like a hard-nosed veteran worthy of 100 games in defence, other times he looks like a Rugby League convert still coming to terms with the 360 degree nature of the game.

Redden: I really really really want to see a Redden/Lobbe tandem next year. Which means I won't.

Rodan: If there was a Rugby Sevens version of Aussie Rules this guy would be among the first picked. Alas.

Schulz: It's a travesty this bloke can't manage more than 15 games a year and is playing for us in this era. Will still get on him for next year's Coleman.

Thomas: Hit his averages.

Trengove: You wouldn't have known he was out there. Better be playing injured.

Westhoff: Bit of a WTF-role yesterday, probably would've been a match-winner had we played him forward.

Wingard: If we ruin this kid I'll be upset.

Young: Super-promising performance and we actually got to see some of his speed and power-running. Hope he builds on it and we're not looking back on this game like Marlon Motlop vs North at the end of '08.

Aside from the obvious I want to isolate these guys for some praise.

Every time I saw Hartlett he was so assured and worked beautifully with whoever was near him to win the 50/50. His leg is rolled gold and with the emergence of Wingard in the midfield I'm not against leaving Hartlett as a running half back, who can get forward for a goal or two. What a beauty.

I really hope Redden has a big preseason, because when he's out there his game is so massive and he is easily our best pure ruckman, EASILY. So competitive and screams #1 ruck. Agree with another poster likening him to Shane Mumford, he even looks like him.

The Hoff hasn't been recognised much but I really liked his game too. Looked a lot less lackadaisical, made it to a lot of contests and was a constant threat in the air. Provides 800% more than Stewart. I guess with Hoff the criticism is that he goes missing too often, but I genuinely feel that this is occurring less frequently and he is one player capable of being a "matchwinner" and swinging the game in our favour with a timely goal. A 200cm player that agile should be a weapon and so hopefully he can continue to work on his competitiveness and figure out how to impact the game in a positive manner even when he's not getting much of it.

Finally, Aaron Young. Watching him closely this week after a semi-breakout game against Brisbane, what was so evident was his increased confidence and hunger for the contest. He looked like he was really enjoying himself out there, I remember him tackling his Richmond opponent in the 4th and heartily taking the opportunity to bury him into the ground. Love that he went back and drilled that goal in the last, players who can stand up when it matters are worth their weight in gold and he only got better as the game went on. And what about that show of strength in the centre in the 4th after Hartlett's long bomb! Won the contest with however many Richmond guys there and fed off cleanly to Pearce? for a running goal. Pre-season Kane nominated Young as the one to watch, and after yesterday I too am convinced he will be something special.

Both he and Wingard kicked crucial goals in the last. Backed themselves.:thumbsu:

I agree that Young's increased confidence was noticeable. Same with Wingard. Both looked to really hunt the ball and showed aggression where earlier on in the year they may have hesitated a bit

I just realise we've kinda got a couple of "pairs" that are working really well together laterly.

The obvious one is childhood mates Brad and Broady... Broady's gone to a new level since Brad's been here, and I guess you could say the same of Brad, in comparison to his output at the Eagles.

Then the new one is Wingard and Young. They live together and the last two weeks they have been playing their best footy together. Both attacking the contest hard.

I agree re: Hoff with the caveat that on TV it is harder to see some of his off the ball laziness. That being said he certainly seemed to have a much better intent. At one stage I noticed him tackling and thought to myself he really tried to hurt him there and I liked it.

Just watched the last quarter and bits and pieces from the other 3. Little things like The Cobra not blazing away and squaring for Youngy at the end were positive. I mean he did the right thing but with how tired everyone was at that stage he could have just blazed away at goals. He is going to be a player.

Youngy needs to really cement his spot on that HFF/Wing for us. Kid could be very good. Love his attack on the footy and seems to get into the right positions, especially forward of the play.

Could not agree more about HH being in the middle/wing. I think he can play as a rebounding defender should the need be there from game to game, but we need to start playing him in midfield and watch him go from there.

From 2013 onward I want a core midfield group of: Boak, Brad, Cobra, Gray, HH, Wingard. You can add in our 1st rounder, maybe a PSD/FA pick up. Moore and Young to rotate through and possibly Kane Cornes as a tagger, but that 6 are young and extremely talented and are the way forward for this footy club.

Goddamn, keep them all fit and bring in a coaching department that knows what they are doing, and lordy, we have a lot to be positive about.....

We looked really slick at times on Sunday. Whether this was just the lack of pressure which can be a product of dead rubber games leading to games featuring bottom teams in the last round being quite high scoring or not, I'm not sure.

Absolutely love the way Wingard finished the year. As good as Toby Greene did this year, I don't think there will be any more complaints that we took the wrong guy. Aaron Young deserves a mention too. He adds a bit for flair, whilst still going in hard and his skills look quite impressive.

My love for Schulz grows with every game he plays.

Broadbent and Bradbert hopefully will continue to build on their best seasons yet. In my opinion, Westhoff had a pretty decent year, not sure if many will agree with me there though.

Theres a long way to go, but at least there are signs that if things start to click, the progression will be fast.

I would love to see him on the end of our 2004 team because at some level he might be almost as good as Tredrea. Sacrilege, I know.

Loved this. Always thought he was going to blaze away at goal, but his pass to Young was great vision and composure. A lot of guys would have wanted to be the hero and take the shot, instead of taking the smart option.
