My top 5 performances:

5 votes: Walsh: Found plenty of it and won critical one on one contests. Was providing exceptional overlap run. Was not expecting this from a first year player. Watching him play, the thought going through my head was that he has already passed Murphy. Come round 1, I'm sure Murphy will step up but all I can say is WOW. Sam Walsh was very impressive today.
4 votes: SPS: It's clear that SPS improving his endurance will allow SPS to significantly increase his output. Still needs to develop his craft when playing at half forward, but he was involved in a lot when running through the middle of the ground. His disposal by foot is clearly a class above. After today's performance, I'm confident he'll be a very good midfielder for us over the next decade.
3 votes: Cuningham: Was very impressive. Was able to get involved and stay in the play when on the ground. Probably could have been named as 2nd best, but I have a feeling SPS may have spent more time on ball, which is why SPS was more noticeable today. Showed plenty of his exciting dash. He's definitely best 22 for mine playing half forward/midfield.
2 votes: Jones: Great intercepting and general defending. Disposal did let him down on the odd occasion today but across the board, it was a very strong performance from Jones.
1 vote: McKay: Did some exciting things when on the field. Felt there were a few marks he should have taken but didn't. Looked very dangerous up forward and hit the scoreboard. Made the most of his opportunities. Could seriously kick 50 goals this season.

Other Players:
Setterfield: Played the second half. Was a but rusty and took a while to get into the game. Had a really good chase down tackle in the 4th quarter. Think he will be a serious player for us. Is a bit quicker than I expected.

Kennedy: Played a lot of midfield minutes. Didn't find much of the ball but he was moving really well. Watch this space for mine.

Garlett: There's something to work with but he needs to tidy up his disposal. The other thing is he needs to hold a tight guard on his opponent. Let his player have too much space at times.

Polson: Please correct me if I'm wrong but I really didn't see him involved in the play.

Gibbons: Thought he was good. Probably one of our better defensively minded players. Always looking to chase and tackle. A good debut game.

JSOS: Needs to find a position. I'm not as convinced as others that he's a midfielder.

Newman: Was very solid and applied some very strong tackles. He'll be a reliable defender for us.

Goddard: Believe he came on in the second half. I actually really like what he did. He'll be a lockdown defender for us. I didn't see him get beaten in any one on one contest today. Just kept it simple and spoiled his opponent. Keep an eye on him because I reckon he could debut for us this season.

Weitering: Had a good game. Watching him live, his running is still a concern. Really needs pressure up the ground with the ball coming in slow and high. If he loses separation, he can't close the gap. He was able to nullify Ceglar in marking contests. He has clearly gone back to basics and just making sure he wins the contest. I think Weitering will have a decent year from what I saw, but he won't stand out. Will do the fundamentals well and play his role for the team.

O'brien: Clean disposal. Had a good game. Was running to the right places to receive the ball. Had a nice moment sprinting through the middle of princess park. Could surprise a few this year.

Dow: Did some good things and will only get better. Wasn't able to utilise his breakaway speed today, but won his own ball in the contest which was good to see.
Terrific work
But its Princes Park....everybody...get it right

There needs to be a place people get sent when they say princess....like the dungeon....write it out a hundred times

To me it sounds as though next game they should swap gibbons and Dow positions. Surely let the guy who won the vfl b an f 2 out of 3 years play his desired position first before throwing him into be a small forward...
I’m sure our forward line would look pretty scary with Dow and Cuningham pressuring the defenders... both are super quick... would remind me of Jeffy and Yaz...

To be fair you would like to think an up and coming young side would have a hell of a lot more to play for and impress in a practice match, you would generally think we would of won easily not get thrashed. Its very depressing.

We won our JLT games last year didn’t we?

Wouldn’t have thought that was an accurate reflection of what was to come. Let’s just look at this for what it is - a shortened practice match to put some of the structures etc in place and a chance to give the kids a taste of senior footy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Okay - but we need to see tactical improvement from Bolton just don't see him as the matchday shrewed type and this wonderful list deserve it.
I here what you’re saying.
I’m bullish on our list, not so on the game plan/tactical side.
Time will tell, backing the CP in for now.
Just want to see significant improvement this season.

To everyone who is freaking out about losing. Please relax! Practise matches are nothing more than fitness and team chemistry boosters. Last year, we won all of our practise matches - including one against the Hawks, yet we all know how well the H&A season went. We won just as many games in pre-season last year than the season proper! Results in Feb don't count for anything.
Anyway, happy to see Walsh get heavily involved and happy to hear we got through without any serious injuries.
Yeah we get that
But winning becomes a habit.
Winning whether it’s tiddlywinks or a practice match creates a good vibe amongst the group.
From all reports they’ve all busted their guts this pre season, so to get some reward for that effort can only be positive.
Considering where we’ve been in recent times, I think any win is very important.
Just MO

That’s true, I’ll be curious to know from people there.

Is it wrong decisions or right decision poor execution. The second one at this time of year isnt is big of a concern

Little from column A, a little from column B.

Some horrible skill errors and some poor decisions that were repeated multiple times.

Walsh was ridiculous, Samo pretty good. I thought Gibbons was pretty good too for his first outing.

But like one of the other posters mentioned - WT absolute F was going on with Plowman's hair??? It reminded me of the time my dad tried to put a black dye through his hair but didn't realise the colour was actually something like Black Cherry, and all the Cherry went straight to his greys and stood out like you know whats.

Gibbons did a couple of real VFL standard things, I dunno if he's got enough depth on his kicking

But he's got a bit of zip and can certainly find it, won't drop his head either, will fight all day like he has for his career.

The game was frustrating to watch

Walsh was amazing to watch

Happy to see Cunners involved, hopefully he can build some confidence.

Skills were horrible in comparison to Hawks, i really hope its not contagious.

Loved heading to PP after work in the sun.

Good crowd size.

Hated the handful of bell end supporters around me who hated everything and everyone and were mentioning membership refunds. Our club doesn't need you.

Great report and from my observations can’t disagree with much.
Hawthorn seemed much better organised though

Probably our biggest query going into this year.
We clearly have the talent, although still quite a young team.

But tactically we need to see improvement this year and an organised team...many times last year our players looked disorganised on the field and didn't know what to do with ball in hand.

Sat ground level on the wing first half and was a little hard to see anything on the other side until i headed upstairs after halftime. Looking at the kids hard to go past SammyWalsh looked unbelievable sometimes you just know when a young fella has it and he showed us today he's going to be something pretty special SamoPetrevski having a full pre season covered the ground really well has so much time with the ball his kicking was first class HarryMcKay also looks a lot fitter after his first pre season also moved really well around the ground in the air and on the ground can't wait till he starts clunking his marks did well down forward with opportunities a little limited DaveCunningham looked fantastic out there today injury free first full preseason kicked a couple of goals looked great further up the ground with he's speed strength run and carry good disposal really impressive. Love him to get his numbers up to 25ish could be a damaging player TomDeKoning his last qtr really impressed me there was the play on the defensive fifty where he made three separate pressure acts one after the other chasing harassing then brought down a player with a desperate tackle with his third chase didn't look too bad in the ruck either our next ruckman. Others that did well today CharlieCurnow LochieO'Brien LiamJones JacobWeitering. WillSettlefield did a few good things when he got on after half time NicNewman was solid PaddyDow was solid JackSilvagni ok second half... Cripps Fisher Phillips back next week hopefully Fasolo Kruezer Marchbank Williamson can get close for the second jlt in three weeks...

Today was really about Bolts letting the kids loose in the midfield and seeing what they could do. Both Murphy and Ed spent precious little time inside the centre square. At one stage during the second half the starting midfield consisted of De Koning, Dow, Setterfield and Walsh.

PM1.jpg

Not too many of the senior staff were missing. The President, SOS & Liddle were all in attendance.

PM2.jpg

....and plenty of the Bluebagger Faithful were in attendance. Maybe around 3,000 or so and getting out of the carpark on the Northern Lawn was reminiscent of the days at Waverley.

PM3.jpg

A full preseason makes such a difference and Samo was tremendous, if not our best, today. His work in tight with clean hands and generally sound decision making made him a standout for mine, always bringing others around him into the game and then working hard to spread. Starting to build that big tank which genuine midfielders need and he covered an enormous amount of ground.

PM4.jpg

It was disappointing to see none of Phillips, Kreuzer or Lobbe able to take the field as Casboult is no ruckman. Unless there are injuries to McKay, Curnow, McGovern and De Koning I struggle to see him getting a game. Our ruck stocks are a time bomb waiting to go off IMO and it's an area that SOS will need to address at the end of the year.

PM5.jpg

Paddy Dow will need at least another year under his belt to build consistency and belief, but in the mean time it's still fun to watch him erupt out of the odd stoppage here and there. People will need to be patient as he learns to ply his trade, but if he can put together another 18-20 games this year it'll hold him in good stead.

PM6.jpg

After a slow start to preseason, another who's starting to build nicely towards Round 1 is Lochie O'Brien. His game is one that will grow quite quickly as those around him do. Like Dow, with consistency and belief will come his ability to impact games and hurt the opposition with that deadly left boot.

PM7.jpg

Mr Vanilla showed why SOS was never going to let go of that first pick. Its not just that he's a very good player, but probably one of the smartest. Showed remarkable composure to think his way through beating multiple seasoned opponents on several occasions and even if he didn't win it himself he made sure his opposition didn't either. Exceptionally clean with his hand when acquiring the ball and looks assured when disposing of it by hand or foot. Walsh may well prove to be the best No.1 since Nathan Buckley.

PM9.jpg

Murphy spent very little time inside the centre square and also spent about half the total game time on the ground. As stated earlier, I think it was a case that both Bolton & Russell wanted to see where the kids were at in their development and getting them to take responsibility for the direction of the game through the middle of the ground. Murphy appeared to look fine, but I do wonder whether he's lost half a yard of pace though.

PM12.jpg

Kennedy was soundly beaten by O'Meara, but the Hawk did have the advantage of McEvoy and Ceglar knocking the ball into his domain more often that not. Casboult to Kennedy......not so much.

PM8.jpg

What was good to see on occasions after Qtr time was a number of our younger midfielders linking up to bring the ball downfield. More often than not Samo was the one leading the charge, but Walsh, Dow and O'Brien were also instrumental in making things happen. One kid I was surprised didn't play was Stocker.

More Pics later.

Okay, long night but I will continue my assessments:

21: Boy, oh boy, he had one to forget. Cannot fault Jarrod's endeavour, he played with intensity not seen since pre-season last year. But today he forgot how to actually kick the football. Nonetheless, provided some real zip in our defensive 50 and adequate ground level pressure, which is a welcome change from a relatively slow backline. Persist, because I know he is more skilful than what he showed today. Also persist because he was willing to put his body on the line and back into packs. Persist.

23: Just another professional game from the WeiterBot. Competed well in the air, commanding. Still prone to those grubby little kicks, wtf Weiters, you are better than that garbage. But overall this was the confident Weiters of old, with much more size. I need more though, and I know he can provide more.

24: Nic was good; he tackles hard, very hard. No backward steps with this guy. He'll play 22 games in our defence. Seemed to gather a fair bit of the ball and generally used it well.

28: Loved Cunners' game. Used his trademark acceleration and silky skills well, with his left foot snap out of congestion one of the highlights of the day. Covered the ground with grace, such a beautiful mover. Thought he was also engaged throughout the entirety of the game, with 4 quarter performances being his downfall in the past. He's a lock in our 22 now. Keep it going Dave.

29: Polson, Polson, Polson... Gosh he tries hard, plays at a million miles an hour but just didn't impact today. Found himself in good spots but he gets smothered so often lol. I don't know what to do with him, he's pretty much limited to being a pressure act player at this stage.

30: Star, we know how good he is and how great he will be.

35: Wasn't really played through the guts. Seemed like the directive was to give the young guys as many looks as possible, with Ed forced to watch from the forward line or bench which is obviously not his preferred position. He's a core component of our inside midfield group and will hopefully have more impact in coming matches.

39: Daisy was mostly positioned on the opposite flank to where I was. Seemed to get a fair bit of the ball but I don't think he consistently hit targets. When he did come across to my wing he rush handballed it out of traffic to a couple of Hawk players and they eventually waltzed into an open goal. That annoyed me. Might've been Walsh who was calling for it but Daisy completely missed him.

40: Was lively, didn't leave much of an impression on me otherwise. Missed some basic short kicks which annoyed me, but many guys were doing that, so ya.

41: This guy copped the short end lol, why is he rucking against McEvoy and Ceglar?

43: Easing back into it. His class is evident and he is generally composed under pressure. Shocking kick in the back half on one of his first disposals, but otherwise was clean and took some uncontested marks and was involved in possession chains. Loves a tackle. Early in his comeback, but positive to get through 2Q.
