Me anticipating reports of seemingly innocuous training injuries

Shuey here as well jogging the boundary at a bit over half pace

Not in club kit like the other senior players and working with one of the trainers. Make of that what you will

When your AFL season ended roughly 8 weeks ago and you get a further couple of weeks off over Christmas I think it'll be quite telling who is mickey mouse about 2023 by who shows up to preseason now vs who only shows up when they have to.
Who knows what else might be going on. There will be players coming back from surgery who won't be making early appearances, some with babies born recently (Nic Nat) and others that might have other commitments they don't want to skip (weddings etc). I'll judge them off their condition on the day they are actually due back.

Yeah, my bad here. Going back and reading what I wrote it was probably a little bit more extreme than what I had in my mind and I didn’t clearly say but I’m sure there’s going to be exceptions and nuance. Like Nic Nat as you say, and players having personal commitments here and there no different to any other vocation.

I do think it’ll be a bit disappointing if there are more than a minor amount of absentees early on.

More importantly, how are Cousins and Priddis the cheapest properties on the Eagles monopoly board?
One’s a former meth house and the other is still being debated

West Coast Eagles training notes: Captain Luke Shuey in action as senior Eagles return ahead of schedule

Luke Shuey was back in action early as West Coast’s first to fourth-year players returned to pre-season training. But he wasn’t the only one.

Here’s what we saw on day one.

Shuey takes flight

Despite not being due back for another fortnight, captain Luke Shuey was a welcome sight on the training track on Monday as he works through a calf issue.

Shuey, 32, injured his calf in a recent off-season running session, the latest setback in a long list of soft tissue injuries.

But the North Smith medallist appears on track to join West Coast’s senior players when they resume in early December.

Sporting a Josh Kennedy retirement shirt, Shuey spent the session on the sidelines, gradually building pace as he ran up and down the wing.

The skipper also tested his agility and even slipped in some trick shots around goal, alleviating fears his latest setback could delay his start to pre-season.

Back at school
Shuey wasn’t the only senior Eagle back training ahead of schedule.

After missing two months of pre-season last summer with his vaccine hesitancy, key forward Jack Darling was back on day one, joining West Coast’s first to fourth-year players.

The 30-year-old ran a few seconds behind his younger teammates as he looks to take the mantle of West Coast’s number one forward after Kennedy retired earlier this year.

Veteran forward Jamie Cripps led the group alongside mid-season draft pick Jai Culley as the Eagles ran several continuous laps of oval two at Mineral Resources Park.

Midfielder Dom Sheed and defender Tom Cole were also a welcome sight after playing just one game and no games respectively last season.

While Tim Kelly, Alex Witherden and Liam Duggan were also back ahead of time.

Delisted but not disheartened
Delisted youngsters Zane Trew and Isiah Winder were the latest victims of West Coast’s list cull last month, delisted despite having contracts for next season.

But hope is not lost for the pair as they returned to training with West Coast on Monday after the club got it ticked off by the AFL on Friday.

Both remain in contention for a rookie lifeline at the Eagles but the club is likely to wait until after the draft before reaching a decision.

It’s expected at least one, if not both could be retained by West Coast next season but first the pair must prove their worth after interrupted careers.

The West Australian understands the Eagles will have two rookie spots available ahead of next week’s draft to go with five in the national draft, including two in the top dozen.

Injured youngsters shine
The optimism surrounding young pair Oscar Allen and Campbell Chesser was renewed on Monday as both highly-touted talents returned to full training.

Both Allen and Chesser’s seasons were ruined by injury, the pair failing to play a game between them.
