Reckon we'll go into opening round with this team -

fb- Broad, Young, Vlastuin
hb- Rioli, Gibcus, Short
c- Pickett, Hopper, McIntosh
hf- Ross, Balta, Martin
ff- Bolton, Kosi, Campbell
r- Naismith, Taranto, Dow

Two spots up for grabs IMO. Personally I'd play Cumberland on the bench and Banks sub.

I think Banks needs to start ahead of Pickett.
He is as tough as nails but can also make the easy things look tough....

Hopper was excellent against Melbourne last week. That said, the slippery humid conditions in which he struggled a bit yesterday will be even more extreme in QLD at 5pm for Round Nothing, so hopefully he rediscovers his touch for that one.

Gotta bring in Cumberland, was a huge spark in the second half of the VFL. Miles and miles ahead of Campbell and Green if you ask me, absolute miles.

McAuliffe surely showed enough to get a call-up for Graham.

Kozi... I don't think even worth bothering, he is very average sadly, but probably have to play him until Lynch is back. Balta forward, for now, but I also don't see it lasting as others have said. I reckon he'll go back and we'll play Lynch plus a resting ruck later in the season.

Here's what I'm thinking for round ZERO.

Grimes, Young, Broad
Vlastuin, Gibcus, Short
Taranto, Hopper, Pickett
Martin, Koschitzke, Baker
Bolton, Balta, Cumberland
Naismith, Prestia, Dow
D. Rioli, McAuliffe, Ross, XXXXX

I have no idea who plays in that last spot. Maybe let's just play Maurice Rioli and let him chase like a madman, hopefully that generates a few goals. I would not personally be picking Campbell or Green, and I'm probably done with McIntosh now. Brown is one defender too many with Rioli on the bench as the 7th. Ralphsmith a big no, and Sonsie is suspended. I doubt we play two rucks, so maybe Clarke plays but otherwise yeah, give Rioli a crack.

We lack quality in our pressure forwards so I REALLY THINK DAN RIOLI SHOULD GO FORWARD, and give young Smith a try at half back with his speed. Yes Rioli has been a very good half back, but... we need him forward, we're stacked with half backs.

Anyway, we might be in strife.

Taranto on the wing?

I have the same cattle (mostly) but I think maybe;

fb- Broad, Young, Vlastuin
hb- Rioli, Gibcus, Short
c- Pickett, Hopper, Ross
hf- Baker, Balta, Martin
ff- Bolton, Kosi, Campbell
r- Naismith, Taranto, Dow

int- Prestia, Cumberland, Grimes, Brown
Sub- Banks

It is odd to have 8 defenders named but I have to say, it is hard to find any other player that deserves a spot.

For the first bounce, I want Yze to make a statement and have Dusty, Taranto and Prestia in there. I would also tell Cumberland that this is the game that he can go out and give a massive middle finger to Hardwick with a great performance.

The only statement I want Yze to make is to pick players on merit, if your form doesn't warrant selection then you play in the magoos.

as long as the person in the magoos form does warrant selection. that's been the problem in the past, a guy like banks might have a pretty good game in the 2's but is it going to translate to better form than a big bodied, seasoned player in the seniors? even if that senior player is well below their best? or are we sacrificing a spot for the sake of development? if so we're not playing players on merit.

I'm not solded on with playing Shorty of HBF...I'm all for playing Bakes and Rioli there...
I like whiskey's side but like you, I would look at Short. The Suns forward line is tall so maybe if Yse was feeling lucky he might swap Short for more height. Maybe Banks, but I think that that may be seen as too much change.

I made a mistake, Green in for Campbell.

Grimes and McIntosh will play IMO.
Agree but don't think McIntosh should be playing. Would prefer McIntosh and Pickett to be fighting for a roll with Ross and Banks in for development.

Kmac has done nothing in the two games to say he deserves a spot.

If Brown is used to play HBF, get him to play the defensive winger role for us instead

The coaches love him.
and thats our problem.

The last coached loved him, the players love him, the supporters love him. And he seems like a great bloke from what I have seen, and he also appears to put 10000% effort at all times...

All that is great, except none of it is contributing to the team output on the field.

I can understand how everything he has done during pre-season earnt him first crack in the practice games, and I'm ok with that, but based on last years form = this years form, then on form he should be dropped

He's been a wonderful servant, a great character, but form suggests his time is up

What form exactly?
We have had two practice games for the year and we won one of them with Kmac playing quite well in it

As cliche as it sounds without actually knowing what his KPI’s are calls that he isn’t performing is just pissing in the wind

Which match did he play well in?? neither of the two I watched. He did get a bit of the ball against the pies, but nothing came of most of his possessions IMO.

You are however correct, in saying none of us know his KPI's, so we don't know what he is being judged on, I am more than happy to accept that.

But it would suggest running up and down the wing, gaurding space, maybe getting there but failing to tackle or impact the contest, untidy disposal and being a great bloke must be his KPI's, because I don't see him doing much more on the field at the moment.

I think it is simpler than that, he is 29 and coming towards the end of his career and in reality we aren't chasing premierships in the next couple of years. We can play kmac or we can play a kid. If we don't play the kid we will not know if he is any good and probably keep him a year longer than we should. If we do play the kid and he is good he gets experience. To me the only reason you play someone like kmac is to maintain the balance between experience and youth.
