Dumma rubbing one out watching state of our play tonight 😂

Gee the meltdown over a practice match is pretty amusing gents. Lots of different structures and personnel changes.

Not sure why people are expecting a new gameplan to magically be implemented perfectly after one pre-season and with plenty of blokes just playing their first real hit out of the year. Things will take time to gel and I'm just hoping that some of the toxicity in here isn't indicative of falling into another cycle of the 80s and 90s of somehow expecting young blokes to immediately replace generational champions and giving coaches zero time to implement new ideas.

What I liked:
  • I've previously thought Dow was a crap footballer and he's beginning to prove me wrong. Ideally needs to develop some hurt factor and we should all be pooling our loose change to get him some coaching sessions with Diesel Williams.
  • Gibcus will be an absolute star if he can keep his body together. Such a fantastic competitor and just not beaten in the air one on one with his reading and leap.
  • Reckon Naismith will play a fair bit of footy this year and looked a very handy pick up.
  • Steely Green and Seth Campbell both look like they can play a bit and should be fast tracked into the team given the experiments with mature age pressure forwards in my view has not worked out.

What worries me:
  • Hopper was absolutely putrid as has been stated here and he was joined by Dion Prestia.
  • The midfield looks extremely one paced and the defensive running from some was non-existent tonight.
  • Not sticking tackles was incredibly frustrating but in a match like this can be down to blokes not wanting to get hurt.
  • Samson Ryan got entirely beaten up on by two much more experienced and bigger bodied ruckmen in Cameron and Cox. Not ready for AFL level playing through the middle.
  • Kosi's leading patterns are, quite frankly, disgusting. Two or three times needed to come at the football and didn't and every time he needed to run back to make a contest he perplexingly didn't.
  • Bolton needs to stay on the ground if he's playing forward. Actually spoiled teammates on occasion.
  • Forwards failing to block for one another.
  • Liam Baker being joint highest inside 50 marks....... You know what, just 'forward line' should be the last few points.
  • Was not happy with a few of Brown's efforts, including the one for Schultz's goal which I thought illustrated a lack of a desire to put the head over the football and commit.
  • Despite being a long way from our worst, both our wings in Kamdyn and Marlion seem to be prone to at least one absolute moment of madness or howler skill error per quarter and with father time not on their side I wonder whether or not the time has come to start trying something different on the wings.

I'm too old to read too much into these sorts of games. There was a moment where Rioli sliced a 15m pass out on the full and had a bit of a giggle which to a supporter can be extremely frustrating but the proof will be in the pudding when we come up against the Suns. No excuses for soft efforts and lack of defensive pressure then.

Gibcus, Dow and Naismith all very impressive.

Campbell is promising, if he gets the speed of the game up, he moves really nicely.

Not overly concerned regarding the game. Port Adelaide won a pre-season cup and then the wooden spoon in the same season.

It's definitely going to take a little bit of time for the forward line to gel when you've got a completely new set up. I do like Balta pushing up the ground in the Richo wing type role though.

If you're going to take anything out of the game - Gibcus is great, Dow is looking the goods too, Naismith is a shrewd pick up. My main concern is Dan Rioli who seems...off

I think pies won the majority of their flags back then

According to my mum (now 90+) the pies won their early flags by paying the best when most young men were away at war.

Now I have no veracity on the validity of this, but I love it as a story, and continue to reinforce it with my Collingwood mates - who have NFI if it is accurate. :):):)

Handball happy bullshit won’t win games.

Distant second in the ruck again.

Contest work was poor.

Lack speed on the wings and forward line.

Not a lot to be excited about.

Handball happy style won't win because we don't have the run anymore with this team. Kicking the ball long to Kosi, Balta and Ryan is not gonna win either though. We are a slow team that isn't good at stoppages, it's not a good combination.

Realistically we have virtually the same list as last year so not much could change. The best we can hope for this season is to find some young players like Dow, Gibcus, Sonsie and hopefully a few more that lock down starting spots by the end of the season. Dusty and Bolton will surely win us a few games, no idea what Lynch will provide, but yeah it's a long season ahead.

Jack Ross needs to be in our best 22 as a permanent mid (like he was drafted to be) until Dimma knew better and stunted his growth.
He was very clean and composed and didn't s**t the bed like others.

BOG was Dow by a mile.
His ability to win and dispose of the ball quickly is exceptional.
While most of the midfield fumbled with the ball he was miles ahead of the rest.

I'm excited to see how much Ross and Dow develop going forward
So you think Ross should be permanent best 22 but we've stunted his growth? Sounds like he's been developed well then, eh?

Why are some of you melting so hard over a preseason game with a new coach? It’s going to be a long season if people are already melting and cussing out half our players over losing a preseason match to the reigning premiers by only 5 scoring shots. Putting aside that we played well 10 days ago, it took almost half a season for both Collingwood and GWS to adjust to their new coaches in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Both still made the PF that year. Not saying we will too, but we haven’t even started the season yet. Yze has a lot to learn about our side and that’s perfectly normal.

I don’t mind if you’re just stating what you didn’t like about the game btw because that’s just part of discussion, but melting about this game and our gamestyle right now is too far.

It wasn't the gameplan or cohesion that was the issue it was just plain dumb football or preservation mode that is the issue.

I know I am melting because Collingwood consistently got more people to the contest every time there was a loose ball. Our players seem to have supreme confidence in eachother to be able to win the ball 1 v 5 as well. On top of that, whenever we tried to run/win the ball we seemed to have a lot of downhill skiers who just bolted forward without providing any cover or options.

There was a passage of play when McIntosh couldn't find an option ahead of him and when he caused thr turnover there were more collingwood blokes behind the ball. If our blokes were not infront of McIntosh nor behind him I have no idea where they were.

The only flag Collingwood won during WW1/WW2 was 1917?

An observation from at the game last night. The 12 premiership players out there simply cannot do what they were were once capable of doing. It's called getting old. However their experience is invaluable to the young players development. Yze will need time to mold an identifiable and sustainable game style moving forward. Something quite a few posters forget to consider with the melts on here last night. I have no expectations this year, I'm more interested in 2025-2028 and what that will look like. Have a good day everyone. 👍

I said way back that our fortunes would be very much based on F50 , our supply was pretty ok . Defence pretty ok , apart from our first none of our goals came easy
I agree with earlier comments midfield mix needs work , hopper and Taranto can’t be in CBD together , worry coaches can’t see that add prestia to . Dow and Bolton adds some pace and reflex the other three just don’t have . Not convinced of bakes as a CBD mid , still think his best work is as a ,little general in D50
All in all it’s not a bad effort to go down to full strength coll by 4-5G , we have something to work with
